Packer: Fulmer by the numbers

Phillip Fulmer is judged by numbers. Take your pick as to which one you judge him, but you know that you do it. Is it the 13 wins that he got in 1998 or the 6 he didn’t in 2005? Is it the 2.1 million that he receives from the University to coach the game of football or the 2 SEC titles he has in his 15 years as Tennessee football coach.

All you have to do is listen to local radio call-in shows, read the newspaper or watch a sportscast on TV to hear Fulmer’s numbers every day. But, there are some numbers that no one ever talks about that tell a more in depth story of Fulmer’s success at UT. They are the numbers that former players speak of and the reason they have the utmost respect for their former coach.

When we sat down last week for this interview, I threw some “Phillip Fulmer” career numbers at him that even he wasn’t aware of:

In the Fulmer career, the Vols have averaged 17 all-SEC academic honor roll selections every year.

“I didn’t know that,“ Fulmer said. “That’s pretty good. I’m also very proud that we’ve led the SEC the last 2 years in number of guys who have graduated and the number of guys with a 3.0 GPA or better. I’m real happy about those kinds of numbers because you don’t keep those every day, and people aren’t aware of those every day. I’m also proud of the fact that we’ve had no NCAA violations and no APR (Academic Progress Rate) issues. There’s a lot more to this than just Saturday’s in the fall. We’ve done very well at that, but also at the other as well.”

Since 1996, the Vols have put the second highest number of players in the NFL with 75. That’s tied with Florida and just three behind Ohio St.

“We have a unique scenario here,” Fulmer said. “We have to go places further than we would like to. But, we have the tradition and facilities to do that. And, we do a great job developing players. Our practices are so intense, that if a young man is going to put himself into a position to play for us, he’ll have to learn how to practice. Our strength and conditioning area is exceptional and I think that we do a great job from a personal maturation process of dealing with young men and making that transition from adolescence to manhood.”

Fulmer is the winningest coach in college football over the past 10 years.

“That’s thrilling,” Fulmer said. “It’s something that I take real pride in. I’m not egotistical enough to think that it hasn’t been a team effort. It’s the team of players and coaches, particularly those coaches who have been here a long time, like David (Cutcliffe) or John (Chavis). Those coaches like Dan (Brooks) and Steve (Caldwell) have been crucial to what we’ve accomplished.”

Fulmer, with Cutcliffe and Chavis have won 85 percent of their games together.

“That’s amazing, isn’t it? I think it’s the great bond that we have,” Fulmer said. “We sit down every Friday and go through a number of scenario’s that could happen in a game. You wouldn’t believe how that has paid off over the years as we’re making decisions during the game. At this point, we’ve had enough knock down, drag outs and discussions … and I mean that in a literal sense. When we walk out of the room, we’re on the same page, and that’s unique.”

Tennessee hasn’t won an SEC title in 9 years.

“I don’t like it,” Fulmer said. “I don’t like it at all, a lot of people don’t. We’ve played for it 4 out of the last 10 years, and that’s more than anybody else in the conference. But, I want to do more than win the division. I want to win the SEC championship. And, if you do that, you have an opportunity to compete for a national championship.”

The number that some fans talk about is a number yet to come. It’s a number that I asked Fulmer about. It’s also a number that he hopes he has control of:

How many more years do you plan on being the head coach at the University of Tennessee?”

“Vicki and I have talked about it,” said Fulmer. “I think 6 to 8 more years. I think that would be plenty. I still have the passion for it and the energy. I learned a lot about myself in 2005 to be real honest with you, about the whole scenario that happened to us. It made me sit down and think, and I said, yeah, I really like this game. And, I like the players and the coaches. I like the energy that’s around this program. I’ve committed to each class that we’ve recruited that we will be here for their time, and I will make the same commitment to the next class. So, I would say 6 to 8 more years until I go fly fishing in Montana in the fall.”

The numbers for the 2007 season start accumulating in just six days. But, the numbers that no one talks about will continue to form the legacy that Fulmer will leave behind when his career comes to an end. And, if he has his way, that will be when HIS number reaches the early 60s.

Nice article, thanks. I always enjoy getting the answers to the numbers thrown around on here daily from the man himself. I say we are extremely lucky to have such a coaching staff and stability despite what a select few on here like to throw out in their trash talking, but the good far outweigh the bad when it comes to the numbers. A few on here want nothing less than a guy who can walk on water leading the team, but the fact of the matter is only One Man has ever done that, and he sure has much more things to do rather than lead his favorite football team. Good things to come and soon! GO VOLS!!!

I love coach Fulmer and am proud that he represents my team. All the Fulmer haters complain about the years since 1998. But what you pointed out shows what we've had for only one year since 1998: Cutcliffe. With Sanders as OC, the program was sinking. Now, we have the 3 headed monster once again. 85% winning percentage....who else can say that as a coaching staff other than maybe Pete Carroll?

I am honestly surprised that UT graduates more players than does Vandy. That is a significant accomplishment.

I thought Fullmer's main number was 305. His weight and average number of Krispy Kreme's consumed on any given day!

In all seriousness that was a great article. Maybe the Fulmer bashers will now shut-up!

Mark Packer will have a moving van in front of his house by sundown.

But he wrote a great piece.

Great article, as Jack Webb in Dragnet used to say Just the facts, mame, just the facts!!!!!!!!

Horseshoes and hand grenades. The article does an excellent job of speaking to the "nice to have records", but without an SEC championship in the next year or two, it may be all for naught. No Fulmer bashing intended, Montana may be closer than he thinks as Wins are what ultimately keep coaches around, not graduation rates. That is a fact no one can dispute.

Well, we've played in more SEC title games the last 10 years than anyone else has (did not realize that until I read this!), lets make it 5 out of 11 with an SEC title and possibly a national title shot! GO VOLS!!!

A pretty good article. Maybe KNS could t-w-e-a-k their spell check on the main page.

Exactly. No more excuses. Get it done.

CRVol - I think we finally have something we can agree on! How about that? haha. But seriously, I can agree with what you said there, and I would expect with the talent we have to get an SEC title within the next two seasons, especially with an OC, Sanders can no longer be a reason behind failing nor do I think we will have to worry about that based upon the significant improvement on offense last season, though there is always room for more improvement for us title-hungry Vol fans!

After all we are the most loyal and hardcore fans in the nation! Speaking of which, who saw the 'Herbies' on ESPN.com, Kirk didn't even have Tennessee in the top-10 best gameday localtions!

nice fluff piece from packer. i don't know who did his fact checking though. fulmer is NOT the winningest coach in the last 10 years. at least two coaches (brown, carr) have better records than fulmer since '97, and that obviously doesn't bring guys like carroll, tressel, stoops, etc. into play. that fact makes me wonder about all those other seemingly great academic numbers. i also noticed he completely omitted the myriad run-ins with the law ut players have racked up under his watch.

Nice article about our coach. He has done an excellent job of coaching and representing the University of Tennessee. IMO, he will make the decision when he wants to leave the university. The people that really count know what they have in Coach Fulmer. A few have played for him.

jcc0404#519050 writes:

I believe that Fulmer can win 7-8 games a year just on the talent that he is able to recruit. It is winning the games that count most where the lack of solid coaching is evident. Two SEC titles in 15 years is not maximizing the talent that has been present over that time. I am delighted that Cutcliffe has returned because there was little imaginative offense in his absence. If 2007 becomes another 7 win year then I hope Fulmer reevaluates the number of years he wishes to stay at Tennessee.

jcherrie#219531 writes:

Any way you slice it, Fulmer is a good coach. Tennessee could do a lot worse. Maybe he's a notch below Spurrier, Paterno, Carrol, Richt, Stoops, etc. But I wouldn't want 'Bamas revolving coaches door. Since the Bear they've had only Stallings. Who thinks Paterno is a good coach? I think he's only won 1 big-10 title. 10 years ago a lot of people were saying that Bobby Bowden was the great coach, now no one is saying that (I think he is). Things are cyclical in college football.

Sheepscape writes:

How is Paterno below Fulmer? He's schooled Fulmer twice...and they haven't been with the Big Ten for the majority of his career so that is misleading.

Sheepscape writes:

Whoops. My bad. That's what happens when you marry a PSU alum.

Southland writes:

way to go CRVol something worthwhile and not overly negative Sure we need to win the SEC again aint easy couldn't do it but one time with Peyton so you know its not easy but I think the main thing missing is fire, passion. I thought it was on its way back last year but nope, maybe this year. We need Al Wilson as a coach to get people fired up again

OldBob writes:

Fulmer is the best coach in America and every TRUE Vol fan should thank their lucky stars we have him and have had him for these many years.

Sheepscape writes:

Spare me the true fan tripe. It is the University of Tennessee, and is not beholden to any one man who is not named Neyland.

BuckFama writes:

If there had been sports talk and fan sites in Neyland's day, some retard would have tried to tell him how to coach. And would have made up some derogatory nickname for him, too.
