Former University of Tennessee standout Tianna Madison, finished 10th in the long jump Tuesday night at the World Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan.
Madison’s best jump was 21 feet, 2¾ inches.
“It’s been a two-year buildup of stuff that’s gone wrong,” Madison said. “It’s just one of those track and field lessons that you have to learn, but hate to have to learn it at the world championships.
“I just need to go back to the drawing board and figure out why it works instead of having to learn how to do it.”
Meanwhile, Kerron Clement powered his way to victory in the 400-meter hurdles to give the Americans an eighth medal, and third gold.
Former UT standout Gary Kikaya, representing Congo, won his heat in the first round of the 400 in 45.21.
Treniere Clement, who lives in Knoxville and trains with Lady Vols coach J.J. Clark, found an opening in the pack with 300 meters to go and finished second Wednesday morning in the 1,500 (4:10.85) and advanced to Friday’s semifinals.
“My goal was to make it back and that’s what I did,” said Clement. “I watched the men’s races and I knew it would be like that. My coach and I worked on a lot of negative splitting of going out slow and coming back really hard. I feel I’m prepared.”
Helwick Second In Decathlon: Former UT standout Chris Helwick finished second in the decathlon at the Internationale Meerkamp Woerden 2007 in Woerdon, Neth-erlands.
Helwick scored 7,602 points during the two-day event in a field that included 44 athletes from 14 countries.
Helwick began the competition by running 11.47 seconds in the 100. He then long jumped 22-1¾ before earning a mark of 43-8 in the shot put. Helwick cleared 6-4 in the high jump and ended the first day with a time of 50.24 in the 400.
The seven-time All-America started day two with a time of 15.63 in the 110 hurdles after tripping over one of the hurdles. Helwick recovered and went on to throw the discus 131-1 and clear 15-5 in the pole vault. After throwing the javelin 212-2, he finished with a personal best 4:22.82 in the 1,500.
