Kelly expected to coach AAFL team

Former Vol QB to get Tennessee post today

Andy Kelly will be named head coach of Team Tennessee of the fledgling All-American Football League at a press conference today at Neyland Stadium, a source told the News Sentinel.

Kelly played for the University of Tennessee 1988-91, completing 514 of 846 passes for 6,397 yards and 36 touchdowns.

He was UT's most prolific passer when he finished school and began playing professionally.

Kelly played 13 seasons in the Arena Football League, setting all-time records for completions, attempts, passing yards and touchdown passes. Kelly also had stints in the NFL and the NFL's World League of American Football.

All-American Football League teams will play 10 games, beginning in April 2008. Teams are located in such college football markets as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee and Texas. Team Tennessee will play its games in Neyland Stadium.

Today's press conference is just part of the week's festivities, which will include an invitation-only combine-style workout and a formal dinner.

Several former Vols - including quarterback Tee Martin, receiver Alvin Harper, defensive back Terry Fair and punter Craig Colquitt - are scheduled to attend some or all of the events.

Former Arkansas quarterback Clint Stoerner, former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel and former Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch also are scheduled to attend, as well as several other former NFL and college players who have endorsed the league.

Approximately 700 players are registered to try out for the AAFL at the Neyland Thompson Sports Complex.

The combine will be segmented into six sessions, with three sessions held each day.

Each session will be webcast live and archived for on-demand viewing on the AAFL Web site, www.aafl.com.

I think Andy Kelly will be a great choice. I think he is destined to be a coach at UT in the future and this will be a great way to get a head start after a great AFL career.

football during baseball season never works. I'm surprised they're using the stadium.

Hey Delt -

Which group of Delts at UT do you belong to? The ones that got kicked off campus because they had no money or the ones that were started about 5 years ago by guys who couldn't get bids to other chapters?

99gator -

I think it's called "Roy Kramer got bored being retired". That's about the only reason I can come up with.

Nickname is "Mamaw" as I recall, given by his Tennessee team-mates as one player said, "My Mamaw can out run you"..

Apparently Stoernover fumbled again much like the UA football coach hiring process.

Coach Kelly is a great guy, this league is going to be around for a very long time. I think we all should start getting tickets now!
