How about "All of the above".
Or how about "The mass media". Man, I hope you guys remember that there is a bowl game soon and start writing a few articles on that before the new year gets here.

Not sure all oars are striking at the same time. Wisconsin must be leery thinking this 3-ring circus is surely a Trojan horse approaching.
State media has totally ignored Vols vs Badgers angle. What could at least been a "two average lumbering teams tilting" angle has been overwhelmed by academic (lack of) suspensions, interviews and malaise.
Fulmer has become the lightning rod for Vol fans, Fulmerites and thru-with-Phils. The Berry, Mayo's,O-line and Ainge (too few SEC-types) have been mostly overlooked for their efforts.
The d-line, LB play (less Mayo, and some McCoy) and overall defensive scheme has been forgettable. Most memorable has been Lady Luck smiling incredibly down the home stretch. Someone knew how to pray effectively on this team. Maybe sjt18 and dskaggs willed them thru. I digress too long
Ah, the Badgers! They will come by land. Ponderously eating the clock. Hope the 3 yd runs do not turn into 8 yds by middle of the 3rd quarter. Some how Vols, will yourselves thru this one and save Phil's bacon. He probably needs this bowl game as much as any in his career. The $$$$$ boys will not ignore no SEC rings forever regardless of what any of us think.
Happy Holidays, hug the children and protect the few odd oggs remaining.

I just hope this Fulmercito team does not give up for the bowl game like it did several times this year.

Dash: Or is it Dr.Phil? What's with the pathetic
name calling psychobabble? Are you a coach? Where do you get your "knowledge of big time college football"? My guess is that you're just a little altitude short of being a Trailways driver. Toe the line. Work like heck.

Hey, wait a minute - I was QB on my pee wee football teams. That one hurt my feelings....
cnalumni writes:
All of the above. Lets see how resilient this team can be now. That has been the word to describe them all year. If they can beat Wisc, it will be a great statement for this team and coaches.
wisonsinvol writes:
Dash, that's a bit more than a mouthful, but I basically agree. I would like to say that the single biggest distraction are the fans like ones you described. But the real answer to this question is None of the Above - it is simply the press, specifically this press.
TommyJack writes:
IPO: Clearly, your potential was not properly evaluated in your pee-wee days. The scouts missed one!

No headline in the paper was changed about Cutcliffe not taking job at Duke. Headlines on GVX changed throughout the day but we stuck to our story. We were confident with our sources.

Heh, heh, heh. I was a skinny little runt who could run like the wind back then. Serious knee problems brought a quick end to my career before it ever started.
Hey Kaplan, can't we get the boys to devote some attention the upcoming bowl game? I know this is all big news, but hey, the season will be over soon. How about an article or two about TN vs. Wisconsin?
pdhuff#552644 writes:
grvol -dead center at 9:12 AM. Always doing the same thing keeps you in the same place if the others around you do something a little better each time. AND ALL OF A SUDDEN they've moved on and up and you're, well, still doing the same thing in the same slowly-sinking place.
Oh, you'll get the appearance trophys, but the grail will reside elsewhere. The board should ask the coaching staff, what else could we have done for you to keep us in the top 10? Not NC's, they're rare. Just get one of the TEN available positions by years end. Not "NEXT YEAR" for the NINTH straight time. WHEN? What else do you need?
Don't continue the "Vol Walk" on thru the game.
Feel better now. tngeoff, I may have overdone this one. TJ, sugar rush. Go Vols, Badgers loom.
Gustoly writes:
Mostly the cowards on sports talk shows and this forum that are flammed by corpulent and ignorant agenda oriented non-athletes. Secondly, pathetic so-called fans that have bought a few "T" shirts and maybe a ticket or two thinking their pee wee experience constitutes knowledge of big time college football and the inner workings of Tennessee athletics. Fortunately, many are seen for their pathetic, demeaning, morose, little man personalities

The thinking above is part of the problem. All Vol fans have a right to their beliefs and opinions. Just accepting the spin put out by the UTAD is nonsense. Fans need to think for themselves. Look for answers yourselves. The UTAD is accepting mediocrity in the FB program. P.F. is the most powerful man on campus. Yes that is true. He has the power to hire the best FB minds to be on his staff and yet because of some sort of paranoid thinking he himself accepts mediocrity on his staff. Why wouldn't a HC want the very best working for him. Corporate business achieves that way. We get good players on campus and yet many do not really improve in their skills while at UT. They do however improve in the NFL. Our offensive "schemes" are stale and hardly ever do we incorporate the newest in ideas of college FB. We have to do it the "old fashioned Tennessee way". Times change but we don't. ex = Why not hire a special teams coach ? One dedicated to special teams alone. Other teams are beginning to do this very thing. Let our program be progressive and not reactive. It just might work better than what we have now. Are you satisfied with no SEC rings in 9 years. I am NOT. 2nd place is for losers. M. Hamilton said he was all about championships when he got the AD job. However he dumbs down his expectancy every year and he changes his spin each year that another ring passes us by. No other coach in any other sport at UT could survive that but we allow our beloved FB program to do so and now we find ourselves in "PIGSKIN PURGATORY". We are going nowhere folks. Playing in a new years bowl doesn't mean squat like it did 15 years ago. BCS bowls are where it is at today. Losing bowl record, no BCS bowls in forever and no SEC championships in 9 years. It is pretty obvious that the problem is the lack of new, fresh ideas in the program. P.F. has the opportunity now to change that very problem. I hope he brings in all new non-Tennessee men to his staff, shake up our offense and defense and let us move forward into the 21st century of NCAA FB. It might just be fun going to Neyland Stadium again knowing the Vols were going to whip anyone we play. It used to be that way. How about it ?

The biggest distraction is the same now as it has been all year: obnoxious media coverage and personal opinions of the media passed off as news. This ridiculous poll is a prime example of this. It seems as though the writers on this site look for any excuse to downgrade the Tennessee football program and the have polls to instigate the public against the program as well.
kaplan#211944 writes:
The game is not until Tuesday. Our resources have been spent on coaches leaving, coaching searches and players ineligible. There will be plenty to write starting Wednesday when both teams report to Tampa. Our coverage of Wisconsin will be supplied from the Wisconsin State Journal.

Tommyjack, you never talk issues. You just jump on a post by someone and call names. Too bad you can't contribute something positive. nafslov, too bad we can't turn you around and let you be a part of the Vol nation and a volsfan. Merry Christmas to you both. Hope you don't respond with Bah! Humbug!!
philfan writes:
If this 2007 Tennessee team is really well above average, in spite of a 9-4 record, it should be able to replace the 3 starters we lost with little difficulty and win this game against Wisconsin. Aren't the great teams blessed with depth in all positions, due to great recruiting? Also, the coaches should be able to come up with a Plan B to deal with this unexpected event, because of the quality of the coaches. That is why I see this game as one of the most important in a very long while.
TommyJack writes:
eefor10c: I'd be lyin if I said I didn't enjoy responding to the faithful. My position never changes. I think we need a major change in TN football. I think instead of one NC, we should have had 2-3. Same for SEC's. For many years, we could get away with being coached down. (yes, I truly believe that). NOW, with recruiting slacking off, our situation will get worse, If CPF can right the ship, fine. But I don't think the ship was right even when we won the NC. And it's sinking now..not too slowly. What a shame. We all deserve better. Work like heck.
Any other issues, EEfor10c, just ask. I ALWAYS have an opinion! Get ready for the big, slow, dumb, inept, Badgers. (just kiddin...afraid of a big can of whoop-ass being put on us)
Peace be upon you, bro.

I seriously doubt that a KNS writer is somehow a "distraction" for this team. The real distraction is the loss of six players for the bowl game.

Good note, kaplan. Madison.com has pretty much gleaned all there is to know for the summer sausage people. I would dare to say at least two of them will have on their triangle cheese-heads at the Outback. I guess swirling water eventually gets down the drain. Merry Christmas.

I'm pretty excited at the thought of some new ideas and we shouldn't be afraid of a new idea. Joe Pa was able to make tough changes to his offense. UT can do that also.

Except for TommyJack, few of you even mention one of the truest indicators of a program in steep decline. Take a look at the Rivals 100 recruiting web site and you'll see that UT is 43rd in the COUNTRY in recruiting so far this off-season. Bama is 2nd and UGA is 3rd. The only future Vol close to being a blue chipper is a TE from Maryville HS. Out-of-state recruiting has tanked severely. Except for 2006, UT had a top 5 recruiting class for the past several years. Odds are that during the coming decade the Vol Nation will look wistfully upon 2007's mediocre 9-4 record as a triumph.

LIST OF DISTRACTIONS, COMPARISON:
"Six or Seven 'young UT athletic Studs' will get to play a significant role in a UT victory on the 1st!"
1. "Lost starters"...Well... Wisconsin has lost six or seven starters, but their lost guys came as a result of injury, instead of failing classes. Also as mentioned earlier, we do have some 'amazing young athletes' who have played very well, late in the season, as one would expect! Jones, Hancock, Moore, etc...Result...Slight UT advantage.
2.CUT AND TROOPER 'will be in the foxhole' with our athletes until the final battle is Won. All the troops know it; I predict an inspired effort, especially by the offense! Advantage UT...
3. The players don't have a clue as to the search for new coaches and who they will be.(just rumors, rumors, rumors...) Those decisions of who to hire will come from 'General Fulmer' and 'General Hamilton'. Advantage, 'not relevant'
4. Well... then the "biggest distraction" is 'Christmas holiday'. If that is the case then that's a push. (-:
Anyway,
The advantages lead to a UT Victory, when many think the players will cave, because of changes.
The real advantages lie with the VOLS.
We'll see on the 1st though for sure. It should be "a great college football game!!"
Go VOLS...

steve22043 Illegal procedure -- 45minute NO-POST penalty for mentioning the name "Bill Battle" in the forum. On second thought, maybe it is good to mention Bill Battle, since that is what we might end up with for our next coach if we make haphazard changes.
pdhuff#552644 writes:
stevefrommemphis- agreed on Battle - that was the most"vanilla" stretch of football I can remember. Those games vs Bama were truly mostly, ahem, forgettable. At least he went on to mega $$$$$.
