Tennessee sophomore guard J.P. Prince has been named the SEC Player of the Week after helping lead the 12th-ranked Vols to wins over UNC Asheville and at 24th-ranked Xavier last week.
The Memphis native posted a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting against UNC Asheville and then improved that career mark with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting at Xavier. Prince, who has played in just three games for the Vols after transferring from Arizona midway through last season, averaged 18.0 points on 65.2 percent (15-of-23) shooting from the field, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in Tennessee's two games last week.
Prince is the second UT player to earn an SEC weekly honor this season. Brian Williams was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Dec. 17 after scoring 16 points and gathering 14 rebounds in a win over Western Kentucky.
The Vols will be back in action this weekend when they meet nationally-ranked Gonzaga in the Battle In Seattle on Saturday.

The guy has unbelievable skill. Makes this team even more dangerous come March. This bunch ought to drub the SEC this year. Sure hope it comes to reality. Florida is rebuilding, Kentucky is woeful, Vandy is candy. Should be a special year!

THE LAST PIECE OF THE PUZZLE....HE IS THE REAL DEAL...WHAT HAPPENS WHEN LOFTON SHOWS UP...THIS TEAM COULD EASILY WALK THROUGH THE SEC
orangesox writes:
I agree with daddyaxe. This team is getting pretty good, and Lofton hasn't even been a real factor. When he gets going, they should be scary good.

In my opinion, JP is a bigger addition then any recruit we couldve realistically brought it. With his talent off the bench (hopefully that will change soon) we are a much improved team from last year. Last year when Chris Lofton was hurt, we couldn't beat ANYBODY on the road, and now that we aren't getting as much scoring production out of him as we have in the past, we can still grind out a win in a hostile Xavier envoirnment (I'm not taking away from all of the small things Chris did). JP is the ultimate compliment to this team. He will be very fun to watch in the future

i know we will be fine but there are so many doubters alot is about loften they think he is overated but when he awakens from this first third of year sleep he has been in everybody will get the anwser .he cant go from a great shooter to a bad one you only get better when he gets his glitch taken care of and he will be back at sharpshooter status and we will be a scary team to play against with loften shooting as he did the past few years and tyler smith and jp prince i see a great upside to prince and the others who are playing alright but need to play better.people was talking about ramar smith would go pro after sophmore season i expected him to get better but he is having a sophmore slump i hope because after freshman year i expected him to score 15, 6 assist 3 steals and 5 reb but he hasnt improved and is horrid at the line, and has been called alot for carring the ball which is a joke all players carry it ,and lost his starting job to a role player at best

I'd love to know what has happened to Lofton. He must be working to hard on defence and forgot how to shoot the ball. I have never seen someone change so much in a year. I hope he has been holding back and will be ready to turn it lose when the SEC starts. If he starts firing it up we could be a Final 4 team.
budrhon writes:
I agree with you Plasticman, with so many options this year the Vols are more versatile than last year. Lofton's game will come, but there may be nights when perhaps JuJuan, Ramar or even Tyler will be the "go to guy". To me that's not a bad position to be in. We've already seen a big game from Brian, now JP. This is what makes this team fun to watch. And just imagine when Crews is healthy.

WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT FROM LOFTON????? I keep seeing these "what's happened to Lofton", "when Lofton gets his shot back" etc etc posts but NOBODY will post what it is EXACTLY they are wanting to see!!! Do you think he's going to shoot 45 or 50% on 3s or what? He's already the leading scorer on the team, he's unquestionably the least selfish player on the team, he's the absolute #1 target of opposing defenses, has a 2:1 assist/turnover ratio, averages 1.5 steals/game, his rebounding is up, he's getting beat to hell on drives and cuts through the lane AND IS ONLY 8 SHOTS FROM HAVING THE EXACT SAME 3 PT SHOOTING PERCENTAGE HE HAD LAST YEAR YET HE'S AVERAGING 2 FEWER SHOTS PER GAME!!! PLEASE! Either some of you expect him to just say "the hell with winning, I'm getting mine" or you just have no clue what you're watching. This guy does not give one single rat's a$$ about his stats - he only wants W's and says that EVERYTIME he gets interviewed. With a helluva lot more talent around him, HE UNDERSTANDS how to keep everybody happy and involved and WINNING! So get off his a$$!!!

DSaVol, what we want is to see him shoot the ball as would be expected from an "AA" so designated because of his shooting. At at tad less that 35% he is the very worst shooting player on the team including walkons--yes he should be shooting 45% from the field and if he has to cut back on the 3s to do it thats what he needs to do IMO. Only you are impressed he has the most pts of anyone though shooting 35%. I agree with the supporting cast he doesnt have to avg much and i'm fine with that but damnnnnnnn the AA needs to shoot a respectable % or assist someone else who shoots better which is everybody. If others are getting better looks now because defense is focusing on him then thats going to change as teams will quit respecting his shot since hes showing no improvement----everyone quit saying its early--no it isnt, hes had an entire offseason and a third of this to get his shot down----maybe he needs some pine-time as a wakeup call rather than being comforted by all the excuse makers
cdldoc#211897 writes:
DSaVol, well said! Lofton got us started in the Xavier game and will continue to come through when needed. If he gets greedy to score more, it will be bad for the team chemistry. Let the open guy score. But I do hope he will get him some better screens as the season goes on.
yabadabadoo1026 writes:
ballewville6 , I can only hope and pray that UT didnt admit you. Have you ever heard of punctuation???---you went 11 lines without any. The point you are trying to makes gets lost in your apparant illiteracy. IMO you need to focus on more important stuff to your life than basketball.
Ironcity writes:
yaba is correct in that as an AA Lofton needs to be shooting around 45% or better. Obviously he doesn't need pine time but he does need to pick up his game for this team to be running on all cylinders. The thing that made Lofton a preseason AA was his ability to drill a three with someone all over him. Right now he is shooting with limited confidence. Even Chris will tell you he is shooting lousy. I think its fair for people here to speculate on Chris's ability to get his shot back on this forum. I for one think he will. I will say this, it was extra hard for Chris to get it going on Saturday when the refs put the whistle away everytime he touched the ball.

I'm just worried about 2-3 times a game we seem to go through a scoreless period. This seems to last about 2-4 min. We need someone to step up in those times to get us going again. Lofton could be helpful in those periods. Otherwise we could have a few more L's on the record. I'm really worried about Memphis. At least it's not till Feb. Living in Memphis with Power T stickers on everything I own I get a lot of flack. Oh well keep winning VOLS!!!!!!

Kenvol the Tiger-Vol game is still almost 2 months away and either way this one is shaping up to be a classic. I'm just glad the teams are finally playing one another on a competitive level. For so long the Vols ignored Memphis (State) during the 80's in basketball. Pearl and Calipari know they've got a good thing going.

I agree with DSA and the others who posted like him. The player I am waiting to see step up in Jajuan, right now he hurts this team more than helps. I think CBP will see this and start Prince over Jajuan. He has been taking way too many bad shots, almost like he is trying to "get his". I like B. Williams as well as. The way Chism has been playing he may soon lose alot of his minutes to BW. Look forward to them playing the Zag's

This may be an absurd question, but are any Vol fans coming up here to the Seattle area for the game? If so, is there going to be some place where other Vol fans will be gathering for pregame beverages?
I understand that there are bowl preparations to cover, but nothing about the bball this weekend???

This team just keeps getting more and more exciting to watch. We have about 5 go-to guys now in : Chris & Jajuan driving to the basket, Brian down low, Tyler & J.P. in creating their own shot. Ramar and Jordan (at PG) get get the ball to one of those 5 players that are in the game at the time. Ryan & Wayne could also be there to reiceve passes down low or pick-up the garbage on the Rebound/put back. Ramar, Jordan, Tyler have improved their FT shooting while Chris & Jajuan have remained steady. Wayne, Brian, Ryan, & J.P. still have alot more room to improve on. It looks like they will probally get out rebounded, but create more TO off of steals and Defensive pressure. They are going to shoot alot of 3's (hitting 30%+) creating long rebounds, but they are sharing the ball creating alot of assists. If they take good 3's for the most part, make smart passes, play their hearts out on defense (full ct/half ct & in-bounds plays) and shoot 70% from the foul line, they will win 25+ games and win the SEC. This would also mean a good seed in the NCAA tournament. NCAA tournament is all about match-ups and who's hot at the right time. Gonzaga looks like TN in alot of ways. It should be a fun game to watch on Sat at 4. GO VOLS!

Yabababble - as several have alluded to here, you sir are a damned moron! You seem to base much of your views of CLo on his selection as a pre-season AA. Just in case you don't have a clue about that either, that is MEDIA OPINION! Chris didn't ask for it, politic for it, or even want it. If you could read you would know that he's said MANY times he's not an AA but just wants to win games. Your misguided impression that he somehow owes something to you or anybody besides his teammates and coaches is simply comical. Quite frankly there are probably 10 shooting guards in the country that are better than Chris all-around but I still wouldn't trade him for ANY of them because he understands a team concept and has unquestionably dedicated himself to it. So all that said, take your Fred Flintstone wannbe self and read Basketball for Dummies before posting again.

Now for KNS - HOW THE HELL DO YOU GO FOUR DAYS WITHOUT AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE #11 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY WHEN THEY ARE ABOUT TO PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT GAME AGAINST A VERY GOOD OPPONENT?????? Yet you subject us to 10 articles a day about a damned so-called football team that has a bigger moron than yabababble for a coach, can't keep it's players eligible, can't keep it's coaches from bailing to some of the worst programs in CFB, and is about to play the absolute least meaningful game since this time a year ago???!!!! I mean really - does anybody give a rat's a$$ about Jonny Crompton right now????? I know he's had a stellar 3 years as the BACK-UP FREAKING QB but couldn't his phooey wait til say AUGUST????? Please KNS get a damned clue sometime in this millenium!
