Prospect Kelly on hold

Casey Kelly is waiting to see what happens with Tennessee’s offensive coaching staff.

Kelly, a quarterback from Sarasota (Fla.) High School, said he hasn’t heard from UT offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe since he was introduced as the head coach at Duke on Dec. 15.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Kelly said he called Cutcliffe and left him a message but hasn’t heard back.

That uncertainty has left Kelly waiting to hear back from the Vols staff.

“It’s been kind of weird,” he said. “You’re kind of getting recruited highly by them. It’s been kind of hard at the start of the dead period.”

Kelly said he’s remained patient while UT tries to fill its coaching vacancies. He said he understands change is a part of the coaching profession.

“I’m not mad they haven’t called me, none of that at all,” Kelly said. “I understand what’s going on. You have one of your offensive coordinators move on, it makes it hard.”

UT’s coaching changes have made it easier on other schools to improve their standing with Kelly.

Kelly, who told the News Sentinel on Dec. 16 UT was no longer his No. 1 school, said North Carolina has moved to the top of his list.

Kelly said he’s developed a strong relationship with the Tar Heels coaching staff.

“Coach John Shoop, the offensive coordinator, has been in the NFL and so has (head coach) Butch Davis,” Kelly said. “He took Miami to all those national champions and had all those first rounders. Both of them know how to get guys to the NFL.”

Kelly will surely be interested to see UT hire an offensive coordinator with similar credentials. Until then, he’s left to wait.

“Whoever they hire will probably be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach,” said Kelly, who’s also considering Oregon, Arizona State and North Carolina State. “I’ll want to meet him and sit down and talk about stuff.”

I don't think the VOLS can call during the dead period. Kelly, call back after the first of the year. Don't lose faith. The VOLS nation would welcome you.

pdhuff#552644 writes:

oh well. He's not aware they're not supposed to call. Darn rules and regulations.

heathut15 writes:

i think that the head coach should be talking to this kidd to atleast let him know that we want him to come here he knows what is going on he would understand and he would still be wanting to come here and play

gohawks1 writes:

Can't do it during the dead period.....

heathut15 writes:

they should have talked to him before the dead period

gohawks1 writes:

Good point. Once Coach Cutcliffe made his announcement, was there enough time to do that before the no-call period began?

wp4ut#536099 writes:

as of right now the VOLS are about 43rd in the latest ranking of prospects for 2008 so unless UT takes in the consideration of the prospects and start communicating better this years recruiting class is in shambles if not already.

dfreeman writes:

Hey 12times, aren't you the one that went to "Carson-Newman Collage"?? Try spelling college right! Oh and allowded isn't a word!! Again I am going to ask your spineless A$$ if you are in fact a Collier???? Who are you and what restaraunts do you own?? Let the TN trash and idiots decide wether or not your food is worth their money!! Put your money where your mouth is you lowlife!! I bet you knew Logan Young personally didn't you??

hdhurst writes:

Here's a cheap shot, but I thought it was humorous.

Coach Cut couldn't call him before the dead period because he was too busy calling his DUKE recruits.

:)

nbt#658986 writes:

Hey Foolmer, forget Kelly! You have a super talented QB from Alcoa named Randall Cobb you need to be recruiting! Why do you recruit out of state when you have so many great players here right under your nose?

GreerVol22 writes:

hdhurst, not cheap at all. Anyone in Cutt's shoes would be doing the same thing. One just has to hope that the quality recruits were contacted timely and that an OC is named the day after the bowl game.

jweaver3#395614 writes:

If we are truly looking for an OC that can run the spread option, this guy may not be in UT's future because he is a pro style QB!!
GO VOLS

bigbluevol writes:

Um...someone should tell this kid that Butch Davis didn't lead Miami to any national championships. In fact, the only one that they won was when Coker was the coach. Sure it was with Davis' recruits, but Davis didn't get them there. Similarly, he didn't exactly leave the NFL on his terms. The Browns seemed to be more than willing to show him the door.

bigbluevol writes:

For the last time: think about it before you just start bemoaning the recruiting class. First, Fulmer always finishes strong. Just because someone's committed doesn't mean that they can't change their mind. We've been on both ends of it before. I mean, Chris Simms committed to the Vols on TV before reneging and signing with Texas. Second, we finished with a top 3 recruiting class last year and before the '05 season, so we're 50-50 in that department in the last 4 years instead of 1/3 as you say grvol. Third, when you finish with a high class one year, it's going to make it more difficult to sign those impact players since they don't want to wait to play. Fourth, recruiting rankings have a lot to do with the positions the player plays. WR's, RB's and QB's get weighted more heavily. We got a lot of WR's and RB's last year. Fifth, many of our best players coming in won't factor into the rankings: Brandon Warren, Gerald Williams and Demetrice Morley. Sixth, it's not over 'til it's over. Seventh, Fulmer is regarded as one of the best recruiters in the country. He knows how to play this game, so he doesn't need tips from us.

orangebloodgmc writes:

Bigblue, in your opinion, is there at least a 60% chance that Morley will be back? Sjt, any info on this?

pdhuff#552644 writes:

true-grvol "Ites" choose to ignore that virtually all top 100 picks have committed. Look at AJC.com Southern postings to see how we're doing in the South. Vols may not break the top 30. We mistakenly thought only captains went down with their ship. This class will not have an impact under Fulmer's caste system until 2009 at best. Stay the course. Feel-good fuzzy is the order of the day. No realism, please.

Vols, somehow thru this circus, beat the Badgers. Pople ruled inelgible only moved the line from -3.5 to -2. Apparently they weren't impact players per the "Experts".

pdhuff#552644 writes:

"pople"?? Too early! meant people. #$#$

bigbluevol writes:

By the way, plenty of teams have success without having top 10 recruiting classes. When Fulmer gets them, people get mad that he doesn't win the national title. When he doesn't, suddenly he can't recruit. No matter what, the guy is a failure to some people.

TommyJack- has our man Hamilton vanished off the face of the earth? He was very "quoty" until Cut decided to split. Fulmer need those "man-hugs" ala S Caroline now. Step up, Mikey, tell us the course we're staying. Go Vols.

jdcdjc#246285 writes:

Just keep draging your feet Fulmer and loose all the recruits

bigbluevol writes:

Please learn the difference between loose and lose. It's an epidemic that has got to be stopped on these boards.

waterskier3#226480 writes:

we need the best recruits because that's the only thing that's made fat boy competitive... look at our record against top 15 talent since our talent has been up and down in recruiting... lately our recruiting has been average at best, unitl last year, and look at our record????? any connections.... people are insane to think that you can recruit average talent and win championships...... the proof is in front of your very eyes......

we have to have the talent because fulmer is not smart enough to make game time adjustments to win if his plan doesn't work.........

BTW adkins will be the oc and phil will call the plays next year.... so kelly see you playing at NC.

does anyone know if we sold all our tickets to the outback bowl?

TommyJack writes:

Dfreeman: You got that? lol

bigbluevol writes:

Hey 12times, no "sets" in a suite. Just because you SIT down in there occassionally as you deliver food and clean up, doesn't really impress any of us. Not everyone loved Logan Young in Alabama, either. Many were glad that they no longer had to worry about him meddling with their program and overpaying for bust recruits. By the way, the Bear is dead and Saban will be singing Steve Miller's "Go On Take the Money and Run" in the very near future when he realizes that no one on earth can live up to your insane expectations.

bigbluevol writes:

gr, you're not counting 2005's class. That's 2 out of 4 counting this year's upcoming one. We were highly ranked in 2005, not so in 2006, very high in 2007 and who knows how we'll finish this year. 17-18 year old kids can change their minds. Even if we don't get a top 10 recruiting class, as long as they fill their needs, they'll be ok. Again, think of the impact that Morley, Warren and Williams will have. They won't be factored in, and neither will the guy coming from minor league baseball (his name eludes me at the moment.) He'll be mature and if he's a bust, it won't count against us because he's walking on.

bigbluevol writes:

gr, I'm not telling you to pin your hopes on them. I'm just telling you to maybe be a little positive. However, if you want to gripe, feel free. I choose to look on the brightside of life. As for 12times, if your restaurants are as bad as your grammar, then I'm sure you owe people a lot more than a thank you. You don't "set" you sit, moron. And, I'm not impressed with your list of "friends."

Well, we haven't quite (emphasis on quite) reached the point where we had to pony up 4mil to overhaul our ship. We may not be far away as some think.

Many of our mainsails are tattered with a worn-out crew from staying a rugged course. Our charts are out-of-date. Our sailing master has left for Dook. Our recruiter/coach has fled to Texas.

Casey Kelly, young man, you are not alone in waiting on the future of Vol offensive football. Meanwhile, the listing ship sails on. Maybe better weather than giving up a 100 in two games awaits. Go Vols!

Hey 12TIMES,
Will you be changing your name to 13 before or after the prestigious PetroSun bowl?

By the way, it's a good thing your daddy could afford to pay for that Carson-Newman degree, because there's no way you could have earned it with your spelling.

Go Big Orange!!!!!!!!!

bigbluevol writes:

12times, I'm glad that you're so proud of Carson-Newman. I know that they wouldn't say the same for you. The only thing that's soon to be 13 times is the number of coaching changes at your beloved UA since the death of Bear Bryant. Saban will leave you high and dry just like Fran did. He'll make you long for the days of Dubose and sexual harrassment lawsuits. Your posts are nothing more than poorly written and full of false bravado. No one is impressed by you and certainly no one fears you. As for your 41-17, congratulations. Even the sun shines on a dog's a$$ every now and then. We'll see you in Knoxville and you can have fun watching your beloved JPW get his clock cleaned while you fulfill your janitorial obligations in the suites.

Man...your vacation must really suck for you to be spending all this time on a message board that isn't even for the team you support. Why don't you go troll the Auburn boards, or go spend some time with your wife on your vacation, genius. Or, do you not "fill" like it?

BigOrangeJeff writes:

12times, let me set you straight.

First, if we (like you) counted each time the Piggly Wiggle press named us National Champions, we would have our "six or seven" national titles. Obviously, the six you have won legitimately - of which you should be very proud - isn't good enough to Sliders and their gross inferiority complexes.

Second, no one believes that, at the beginning of the season, you would have been proud of a bowl game in Shreveport. Hell, some of you guys even guaranteed another MNC.

Third, I can't believe you're screaming about the fact that your bowl game is the only game on that day, as if that's something to brag about. If so, I guess it ranks right up there with the San Diego County Credit Union Bowl, the R&L Carriers Bowl, the Sheraton Bowl, the Motor City Bowl, the International Bowl, and the GMAC Bowl.

Finally, who exactly is it you say you are and how can Shawn Summers verify it? All I can tell is that you're some goober whose life is so pathetic that you troll other teams' websites trying to make you "fill" better about yourself.

Grow up, get a job, move out of your mom's basement, and quit spending your welfare money on booze at Texas Roadhouse.

I know the Collier girls (and boys) well, and I just can't believe they are a tpoic on this message board. This is the first and last time I will post a message on here. 12Times is undoubtedly an idiot and almost certainly a liar. But I can't believe you folks waste your time responding to a guy who can't type, namedrops Sevier County business people and a chef at a hotel/resturant than anyone with a travel guide or the internet can name, and that (purportedly) spends his vacation on this website. Not to mention that he places Ruth's Chris in the same echelon as one of the most touted five-stars in the U.S. and brags about going to Carson-Newman, which, last time I checked, hadn't edged out Harvard in the academic standings. I won't know because I won't read any more of this garbage, but please, Vol fans, let it go... just read the news and sensible comments and let it go.

dfreeman writes:

Yeah, 12braincells actually you named the whole fam damily!! You must be proud!! I only mentioned a last name, and if your world was bigger than Gatlinburg you might've understood that no one else would have known who I was talking about!! When you get off your knees tell "Mr Summers" to help you up and that we Vol fans said hi!!

You calling us hillbilly's is hilarious by the way!! You live in a town that thrives on a "hillbilly" image!!!

Cleaning jockstraps in the locker room doesn't mean you were a member of the Carson-Newman football team!

TouchdownTN - let's take NewMexicoVol's advice and shut him out!! Don't say a word to this jacka$$!!

Do not feed the trolls (e.g. 12times). They're likely to stay around.

Also, more great recruiting news from espn.com:

"Lerentee McCray concerned about potential Vols coaching turnover

Former Hurricanes ESPN 150 outside linebacker pledge Lerentee McCray told volunteertv.com, "Tennessee was up there, but they got a lot of coaching chances so that changes things. All of the coaches that were recruiting me are leaving. Coach [Kurt] Roper and coach [Matt] Luke have told me they are leaving."
Both assistants are slated to follow former Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe to Duke. Luke has been the Volunteers' recruiting coordinator along with his duties as tight ends coach."

raynochspeed - good post and advice.

Recruits are fickle. Instead of wanting to play for ol' Siwash, they're young and like to attach themselves to a person they met face-to-face. That's normal. Kinda like when I was a freshman and met Linda H., a junior. Still think about her many years later.

There will be other McCrays.

Agreed FWB. Time to pull the plug on this dude and let Auburn deal with him. What's their streak vs the Mullet Nation now?? 5 and 6 on the way? That's gotta hurt.

Please don't misunderstand me, I want Bama to lose every game they ever play except for when they play Notre Dame, but we can not judge all Bama fans by this one fellow.
