Leadoff Banquet for Helton ceremony sold out

When Todd Helton becomes the first University of Tennessee baseball player to have his jersey retired, the ceremony will take place before a sellout crowd at the Knoxville Convention Center.

More than 1,100 tickets have been sold for the 16th annual Tennessee Baseball Leadoff Banquet on Jan. 30.

The event also will provide fans with an opportunity to meet the 2008 Vols along with first-year head coach Todd Raleigh and his staff.

The crowd will be the largest in the banquet’s history, exceeding the crowd of approximately 900 who attended the 2005 banquet when Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones was the guest speaker.

Helton, a star first baseman for the Colorado Rockies, also will become the 17th person inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Hall of Fame.

It should be great. One of the best athletes in Tennessee history and Phil Garner too. Just a great evening. MLB and NCAA together what a treat. Can't wait.

I am happy that Todd will receive this honor and deservingly so. It is also great that Todd finally got to play in the first World Series of his career. Should be a wonderful evening for young and old alike in honoring one of Tennessee's finest athletes ever. Congratulations Todd.
