Warren asks for release; goal is UT

Former Alcoa High School standout Brandon Warren has officially requested a release from Florida State with the intent of transferring to Tennessee.

The Tallahassee Democrat first reported his request Monday afternoon on its Web site, and Warren's mother, Deirdre, confirmed Monday night that her son had asked for a release.

Warren, who helped the Tornadoes win back-to-back state championships and earned the 2005 Class 2A Mr. Football, told FSU he is seeking a transfer to Tennessee.

Warren was named a freshman All-American at tight end after catching 28 passes for 301 yards and a touchdown last season. He has not spoken with reporters since returning home earlier this month.

According to the Democrat, Florida State typically grants releases as long as players do not transfer within the ACC or to Florida, which plays the Seminoles every year.

Should FSU deny his request, Warren could appeal to the school's NCAA faculty representative, who holds the final decision.

Without a release, Warren could not receive financial aid during his first year, nor could he speak with Tennessee about the possibility of transferring.

Warren's mother said the family expects to hear back from Florida State next week, once Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden returns from a Nike-sponsored event for football coaches.

Precisely when Warren could see the field again will take longer to determine.

Warren, who was enrolled at Florida State as of Monday afternoon, would be in violation of his national letter of intent if he does not return to Tallahassee and finish the spring semester.

Players who do not complete one full academic year at the school with which they signed are penalized a year of eligibility.

To be eligible for the 2007 season, Warren first must be admitted to UT, receive a release from his national letter of intent and win a hardship appeal with the NCAA.

Warren's mother battled cancer after having a cancerous kidney removed in 2005.

At worst, Warren would likely be eligible in 2008, with three years left to play two. He would be allowed to practice with the Vols once he was admitted to the university and enrolled in classes.
