Williams' arrival at UT likely delayed again

Gerald Williams has enrolled at City College of San Francisco, further delaying his Tennessee football career.

The linebacker/defensive lineman, who originally signed with UT out of Boyd Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., is not expected to make his much anticipated return to UT until summer 2008.

UT had hoped Williams would be academically eligible to enroll in time for the 2007 spring semester or, at worst, in time for the 2007 season.

After signing with UT in 2005, Williams participated in preseason practice the following fall only to be sent home by the NCAA Clearinghouse, which took issue with a correspondence class he had taken in high school.

There is a slim chance Williams could still enroll this year. He has not received a score from the final college entrance exam he took while at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy last semester. If that grade is satisfactory, then Williams could transfer.

Upon Williams' return to UT, he could have three or four years of playing eligibility left depending on whether he redshirts this season.

Williams' likely absence does provide some more room for UT's nearly overstuffed 2007 class. The Vols have 27 commitments and several highly touted prospects still considering coming to Tennessee.
