Dearstone was in Memorial Gymnasium preparing to broadcast the Lady Vols game against Vanderbilt when he heard Stallings refer to Pearl as an "idiot (expletive)."
Stallings was conversing with ushers, who had indirectly referred to Pearl and his players coming down through the stands for Mondays Lady Vols game versus Duke. Pearl painted his chest orange and was sporting the letter "V".
Dearstone said the comment on Pearl came in the context of Stallings saying he had no intention of doing anything like that "idiot a------ does." Dearstone said the remark came as Stallings walked near midcourt and could be heard from at least 50 feet away. The building was not yet open for fans.
Dearstone recounted the incident on the morning sports talk show he co-hosts on the Sports Animal. It sparked a lively response from callers. Throughout the day, it became a topic on Internet message boards.
Vanderbilt officials were not aware of the situation Friday afternoon and were not prepared to comment.
Pearl declined to comment after practice Friday.
