Honor becomes a family affair for Andersons

Former Austin-East track standout Jenae Anderson has one more award to pick up before leaving for Georgia Tech to run track in the fall.

Anderson, along with four other recently graduated high school seniors, will be honored at the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony as high school athletes of the year.

“It’s a wonderful honor,” said Anderson, who will share the female award with former William Blount basketball player Angela Puleo. “I’m happy that I have been recognized for my athletic achievements over my four years of high school.

“To be great on the track, you also have to be great in the classroom.”

In May, Anderson won two Class A/AA state championships. She was first in the 100 and 200 dashes and finished second in the 400. She won all three events as a junior.

Anderson’s twin brother, Anthony, will share the boys’ award with former Maryville standout Tyler Maples and former Fulton standout Dennis Rogan. All three will play football for Tennessee in the fall and were not allowed to speak to reporters.

“It’s a really big achievement because we do everything together,” Jenae said of being honored with Anthony. “We tried to go to the same school, but it didn’t work out.”

Puleo, a former basketball player for the Lady Governors, averaged 26.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game. The Georgia signee finished her high school career with 2,650 points, 679 rebounds, 487 assists and 276 steals.

“Obviously it’s a great honor just being recognized with the other winners,” said Puleo, who is taking summer classes at Georgia. “They’re all just tremendous athletes.”

Maples played football and basketball for the Rebels, helping his team to state titles in both sports.

On the football field, Maples finished his senior year with 25 tackles, seven interceptions, six pass breakups, 19 punt returns for 334 yards and 57 receptions for 1,279 yards and 19 touchdowns. He was the Division I Class 4A back of the year.

Rogan rushed for 2,876 yards and 44 touchdowns for the Falcons in 2006 and was named PrepXtra’s Offensive Player of the Year. In the state championship game against David Lipscomb, he rushed for 208 yards and was honored as the Offensive MVP for the BlueCross Bowl.

Rogan was a finalist for the Division I, Class 3A back of the year.

Anthony Anderson had 48 catches for 1,010 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior. He recorded 67 tackles and had two fumble recoveries and six interceptions on defense.

Anderson finished third in the Class A/AA 400-meter dash as a senior.
