Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton, left, talks at a press conference Thursday during a tour of Thompson-Boling Arena.

One by one, new black seats are filling into the new-look Thompson-Boling Arena.

But fear not, traditionalist Tennessee Vols fans; athletics director Mike Hamilton has ensured the renovated basketball arena still will have a distinctively Big Orange flavor about it despite the change in seat colors.

“You can see we’re painting all railings and ducts orange,’’ Hamilton said, standing in the center of the arena and pointing up toward a new black-tiled ceiling, “and then these stairwells will all be orange, and the elephant doors will be orange, as well as all entrance points.

“The floor-level walls will all be orange, too.’’

The court remains the same, meaning orange-and-white checkerboard baselines, and the various banners hung from the ceiling will be orange.

“Phase I of the project is running on time, so we’re about halfway through with it,’’ Hamilton said. “It will be complete by Oct. 12.’’

Blaine Construction is handling the $20 million renovation, which began in March, while Johnson & Galyon is working on the addition of the $16 million Pratt Pavilion practice facility.

Pratt Pavilion features two full-size gymnasiums, one each for the men’s and women’s programs, as well as space for sports medicine, strength training, film study and recruiting.

“I look out my window, and all I see is commitments at Tennessee,’’ UT men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl said. “I love that the first phase is all about the fans. Every fan will get a new seat and a scoreboard that will be off the charts.’’

John Currie, UT’s senior associate athletics director, agrees.

“The scoreboard will blow people away,’’ Currie said. “Just think what the JumboTron added to Neyland Stadium.’’

Hamilton said the new scoreboard, produced by Daktronics of South Dakota, comes in at a price of $3 million. It measures 32 feet by 30 feet.

“You’ll be able to see the sweat on your brow (on the replay screen),’’ Hamilton said. “There will be a speaker cluster over it, and an LED ring around the top.’’

And, according to Pearl, replays of some pretty good basketball.

“Timing is everything, and there couldn’t be a better time on the men’s side to make this commitment,’’ said Pearl, whose team is projected to win the SEC. “I’m sure Pat (Summitt, UT women’s coach) will take full advantage of it as well.’’

Currie pointed out that the community also benefits.

“Charlotte (N.C.) spent $250 to $300 million of public finances to replace an arena built in the same year as this one (1987),’’ Currie said. “We’ve spent $20 million of privately generated dollars to essentially have a brand-new building that will serve the university, the community and the region.

“It will provide a huge regional economic impact without using public funds.’’

UT is one of fewer than 10 intercollegiate programs in the country that receives no funds from state subsidies or taxes.

If there’s a downside for fans, it’s that Tennessee basketball figures to become a tougher ticket.

Capacity will fall from 24,535 to somewhere between 21,000 and 22,000 because of the addition of luxury boxes.

The Vols drew more than 21,000 fans to four games last season, and they play host to defending Big Ten champ Ohio State, as well as conference rivals Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas and Georgia next season.

UT basketball will generate more money with the skyboxes, as 32 of them have sold out; 20 at a cost of $50,000 apiece, another 12 were $35,000 each. There’s already a waiting list should one open up.

“You know, they used to make fun of our building, and say it was too big,’’ Pearl said. “It was a reason kids were told they shouldn’t play here and coaches were told they couldn’t be successful here. Now, it’s a huge advantage for our student-athletes.’’

I can't wait. What excitement with Pearlism.

GreerVol22 writes:

Many lofty expectations and dollars being heaped on this basketball program at present. Its going to be really cool to have something else to do in January besides gripe about losing to a mid tier BigTen or ACC school in a bowl game.

What a class facility. The best in the SEC. It makes Vandy's Memorial Gym look like an old high school gym. Go Vols!

Greervoltootoo do you define yourself as an optimist or pessimist? I mean gee Wally the Beav said Eddie Haskell was mean before we even laid eyes on him. Like saying we are going to lose bowl game even before regular seasson starts. I say GO VOLS!!!

jandjhome#228397 writes:

Look at history vol4jesus. I remember telling an Aggie fan after the Cotton Bowl that we VOL fans did not know how to react because we were not used to winning bowl games and no I haven't forgoten the National Championship in the Fiesta Bowl.

OrangeCrush writes:

Glad to see "Black" colors in the arena. Now why don't we have one football night game where we add a splash of additional black in the jerseys?

We are one of the only schools that only have 2 colors - Orange and White.

I remember there for a while we were on a roll winning ball games. Of course, the stakes have gotten higher and the playing field alot more even with scholarship reductions. As of late more losses than W's. Believe me I was in Atlanta for our James Banks/debacle with Clemson. I live in SC so I had to hear about that for awhile. Lets turn back the clocks to beating Wisconsin ala garden State bowl and Michigan in Florida. Commitment to excellence on all levels is the only route to Big Orange prominence in regular season and bowl games.

Can someone please tell me exactly why you're all gushing over the unnecessary $20M replacement of seats in TBA? I get it, they're black instead of orange...so.

GreerVol22 writes:

4Jesus, I'm neither a pessimist nor optimist, just a realist. I do think we have a "realistic" chance of having a very good season, but also "realize" that our bowl performace has been "really" pityful since '98. only 2 wins, Michigan in '02 and A&M in '05. I think thats more than enough justification for my original comment. GO VOLS!!! hey wait, is that tootoo optimistic for you 4Jesus?

I wish they hadn't put ANY seats in the arena! Perhaps some of the blue hairs and bandwagon jumpers would get off their collective arses and make some REAL noise once in a while. But even WITH the seats the BLACK HOLE is gonna be awesome!

DSaVol, good to see you posting again.
I look forward to basketball as well, Coach
Pearl has brought electricity to the program
again. I like having 24/7 365 sports in big orange country!!!

Black is fine with me. Now, how about some ORANGE on those away game football uniforms? We are not the Big White as our travel unies suggest. Bring back some ORANGE pants to go with the white jerseys!

ThurmondEppy writes:

Black is ok I guess on the seats, but I've never understood how it's creeped onto our football and men's bball uniforms, just like the baby blue creeped onto the lady vol uniforms. Last time I looked, our colors were orange and white, picked by the student body nearly 100 years ago because of the orange and white flowers on the Hill. Tradition should be followed no matter what when it comes to school colors. Otherwise, why not toss in some maroon, red or gold?

andefromtn#212139 writes:

I hate the black. It with the orange and white reminds me of Halloween. Orange and black is a ugly combination even in the best of situations. Even our shade of orange is getting darker. It is sad that "marketing and trends" have erased 100 years of history. I didn't like the light blue when it entered the uniforms of UT women's program either and now you have some of them using the black over the light blue. It is confusing. At least our Lady Vol blue has won the championships that has allowed that light blue to earn some respect. What was done to allow spotters to see numbers better has gone to far.

So we spent 20 million to add black seats and change a color scheme, but did we improve the access to better views to our wheelchair or physically challenged fans or do they still have to sit behind rails and try to see over them and the other fans? It a shame that luxury seating took a higher priory than fans who spend a larger percent of their incomes to see a game than a well to do fan. Schools just keeps catering to those with monies and leave the some their most loyal fans in the dust by raising prices out of reach.

AllVol writes:

I'll have to admit that the black doesn't do anything for me either--especially on our uniforms--it does look Halloween. I could go with orange road pants, and the powder blue gives a touch of femininity to the Lady Vols uniforms. Nonetheless, it's always great to be a Tennessee Vol!

I wasn't sure about the black seats and black tile ceiling at first, but now looking at it I think Thompson-Boling arena will be the best one in the SEC and one of the best in the whole country. I also think we are going to fill it up every night and set attendence records in the men's and women's games this year. I cann't wait! I will be there as much as possible if I can get tickets. If I cann't get tickets I'm sure I will be able to watch a lot of the games on TV this year. Since we are going to win the regular season and post season SEC titles in both the men and women this year! How's that for positive thinking. However, I do believe we have the best coach in history with Pat Summitt and one of the best men's coaches with Bruce Pearl. I'll see you at the games - home and away. Go VOLS!
