The News Sentinel won four first-place awards in the annual Tennessee Sports Writers Association writing contests.
News Sentinel sports editor John Adams was first in the best-columnist category and also was first in event writing and headline writing. Bob Hodge was first in outdoor writing.
Mike Strange was third in column writing and event writing. Jesse Smithey was second in prep writing, and Adams was third in feature writing. Roland Julian was second in headline writing and Dan Fleser was third.
The News Sentinel also placed second for best special section and third for best daily section.
Ron Higgins of the Memphis Commercial Appeal won the writer-of-the-year category. The award is named after former News Sentinel sports columnist Gary Lundy.
