Octavio Alesi, a rising senior at Tennessee, set a Pan American record this week in the men’s 100-meter butterfly during the preliminaries in Rio De Janerio, Brazil. Alesi finished in 52.54 seconds to surpass the best set by Ben Michaelson of the U.S. in 2003.
Alesi, representing his home country of Venezuela, placed sixth in the semifinals in 53.46 and finished fourth in the finals in 52.95.
Alesi also helped Venezuela to a third-place finish in the 4x100 freestyle. He swam the second leg in 49.93.
On Saturday, Alesi finished third in 22.99 in one of two heats in the 50 freestyle. He will swim in the finals today and is expected to be part of Venezuela’s entry today in the finals of the 4x100 medley relay.
