Calling all callers: Looking for 'King Caller' of radio

It’s tournament time on The Sports Page.

The News Sentinel’s sports-talk show, which airs Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon on The Sports Animal, will take the first steps this week toward selecting the top caller in the local area. All you have to do to enter is call the show this week.

A Sports Page Selection Committee will then evaluate the callers and select the 16-caller field for the championship tournament, which will determine “King Caller.”

The audience will decide which callers should advance through the tournament. They will be able to vote online on govolsxtra.com.

First-round tournament match-ups are scheduled for Aug. 16-17. The championship will be decided the week of the Tennessee-Florida game, Sept. 15.

The winner will receive numerous prizes, including a La-Z-Boy recliner. He or she also will get to co-host the show for a day.

“I’m getting excited just thinking about it,” said Sports Page host Dave Hooker. “We’ve always felt we had the most informed and entertaining callers in the area.

“This will give them a great chance to showcase their ability.”
