Baugh stands tall for U.S.

University of Tennessee signee Vicki Baugh stood tall against China’s best in a 101-60 victory on Friday in the U19 World Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The 6-foot-4 Baugh was asked to help stop 7-foot center Wei Wei and Meiling Zeng, who had 14 points, 16 rebounds, and 16 assists the day before against Lithuania.

“I was prepared for her game, and I knew that I was going to have to dominate on the glass,” said Baugh. “I think the glass was where we strongest today, and we really need to keep it up.”

Zeng finished with seven rebounds, but only one on offense, scored 12 points and committed five fouls. Wei had three rebounds.

Baugh had seven rebounds in a little over of five minutes to start the game. She finished with a team high-tying 11 rebounds (five offensive and six defensive).

The U.S. outrebounded China 68-40

Baugh, who made 4 of 5 from the field to finish with 8 points, played 15 minutes as the Americans improved to 2-0. She had a block, a steal, two turnovers and committed four fouls.

UT signee Angie Bjorklund came off the bench and played 19 minutes, scoring four points on 1 of 3 shooting and make both free throws. She added two rebounds and one assist.

The U.S. will conclude the preliminary round against Lithuania today.
