Vols are serious about 3-4

Veterans script practice with new players

HOOVER, Ala. — Tennessee spent about three days during spring practice working on a 3-4 defense.

The Vols might do a little more than that when fall camp begins Friday.

Based on Jerod Mayo’s conversations with UT coaches this offseason, the All-SEC linebacker says he thinks the Vols are serious about using a three-lineman, four-linebacker approach.

“I definitely do (think UT will run some 3-4), the way coaches are coming at me and talking to me about it,” Mayo said. “I think that’s still alive.”

Alive because it just might give Tennessee its best chance to put its best players on the field.

That was the reason given when UT coach Phillip Fulmer talked about the 3-4 look this spring.

Linebacker is certainly more of a strength than defensive tackle heading into two-a-days.

Ryan Karl returns as a starter at strongside linebacker, while Mayo is projected to move from weakside to middle linebacker.

Rico McCoy is ahead of Dorian Davis at the weakside spot heading into fall camp.

Should the Vols employ a 3-4, either Adam Myers-White or Ellix Wilson would likely move into the starting lineup.

Some of that could depend on how quickly Karl can be ready to play after suffering a compression fracture in his spine during a weight room accident this summer.

Karl is still expected to participate in fall camp, pending results of an evaluation.

At defensive tackle, J.T. Mapu and either Dan Williams or Demonté Bolden are the projected starts right now.

Behind those three, though, there’s little proven depth.

“At first I thought (the 3-4) was just a ploy to get the defensive tackles to step up, but they’re still talking about it,” Mayo said. “The coaches are going to put the best players on the field. Coaches been watching film on it, and I think they’re still watching film on it.”

Meanwhile, Mayo and quarterback Erik Ainge were among players who helped organize and script three regular season-like practices last week with incoming players.

“I’ll tell you who it really helps, the young players who just came in — Eric Berry and guys like that we’re expecting to play right now,” Mayo said. “Instead of just two practices a day to smooth out those wrinkles, we’re doing it now for three days. Come camp time, they’ll be used it.”

Discipline Counts: With the ongoing issues off-the-field in the NFL, Fulmer said that discipline is more important than ever.

In response to a question on Friday, he outlined his philosophy on dealing with players who get in trouble off the field.

“It goes back to the history of each one of them,” Fulmer said. “If a guy has had consistently inconsistent behavior, you know you’re getting ready to have a problem. That’s the reason our players understand we’re not putting up with any crap. This is the way it’s going to be.”

Evaluating individual incidents to determine what’s best for the program is key, he said.

“We’re going to deal with it as we see the right, firm way to do it,” he said. “Now that doesn’t mean I’m going to chunk every kid’s career at the first incident. But if it’s something that’s significant and we’ve had some consistent problems, we’re going to deal with it.

“I’ve let a couple guys go. Might have been the wrong thing as far as them, but it was the right thing as far as our football team.

“I think less tolerance is out there than ever before right now.”

Ainge’s Go-to Guy? When asked Friday who he would throw right now on third-and-10 in Gainesville or Tuscaloosa, Ainge pointed to two players.

“I’d say Lucas Taylor or Austin Rogers, just because they’ve made those catches against team,” he said. “Lucas caught balls against California; Austin had a great game against Air Force. I think I would have to say them.”

Ainge said that answer could change after a few weeks of fall camp.

Meachem Mistake? Despite the fact Robert Meachem was a first-round selection in the NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints, Fulmer said he thought Meachem could have done better if he’d chosen to remain in Knoxville for his senior season.

“I wish Robert had stayed,” Fulmer said in response to a question from a New Orleans television reporter. “I think he’d have been better off if he’d stayed. I think he could have been a top 10 pick, personally.

“But will he help the Saints? Absolutely.”

Vick Reaction: Jerod Mayo, a Virginia native who grew up a few minutes Michael Vick’s hometown of Newport News, said he’s hopeful the embattled NFL quarterback can get his career back on track.

Vick faces trial in November on a range of charges stemming from illegal dogfights that were allegedly based out of a home he owns in Virginia.

“It was real hard (seeing him in trouble),” said Mayo, who considered Virginia Tech during the recruiting process in large part because Vick played there in college. “Even though he hasn’t been convicted of it, just to be charged with that, he’s automatically guilty in the public’s eye. I just want the whole process to get over with.

“Hopefully he can continue his career.”

Mayo said he’s never seen a dogfight and “doesn’t condone that type of behavior.”

I believe we have the talent, speed, strength, facilities, coaches, and FANS to play with anybody in the nation on any given day. Maybe not 4 deep, but at least 2 deep. The Players have to do it. The coaches can not do it for them. By October 1 we will know what kind of heart and character this team has. Give me heart and character any day over talent, but we do have talent too. That always helps. Our Tennessee boys will pull us through, I think, and that includes our BIG GUY, Tennessee boy, born and bred, HEAD COACH PHILLIP FULMER. He will get the job done, I believe!

ESPN HAS A POLL OF WHO WILL WIN THE SEC.
UT isn't even a choice.
auburn, georgia, florida, lsu. PUT THAT ON THE LOCKER ROOM WALL BOYS!!!!!!!

Team spirit is there. Just hope we have some freshman intrepidation, good luck, and hard working juniors and seniors. We have had talent for years with no production. It seems like the players of late just think that the opposing team will be shaking in their boots when Tennessee shows up. Things have changed in the last 10 years. You now have to fight for every inch, every second, every yard and every breath until the clock shows 00.00 in the fourth quarter.

andy112382#209793 writes:

zacurtis - yea, I saw that, too. Talk about a slap in the face! One team on the poll lost all but 1 starter on defense, their QB, and two of their top 3 WRs and the other lost their QB and a handful of other key guys, here we are with a strong OL, senior QB, great group of LBs and DBs (IMO), a solid stable of RBs that seems to finally be healthy and we don't even make the poll!

It's hard to see a legitimate switch to a 3-4 with the Vols love for the lighter faster linebacker....maybe in college it works but in the pros it takes a few years for the transition because it takes a certain type of nose tackle to clog up the blockers and allow the linebackers to make plays and those linebackers need to be able to shut down the run DIRECTLY...but I love being wrong.

Touchdown TN,If you don't have orange colored glasses then why are you a fan of TN football? Why do you look at this website to see what is going on with TN sports in the middle of the summer? Are you so pessimistic because you don't want to get your hopes up and be let down? Will it make you feel like more of a man, if you are right and we have a horrible season? Why not be a penn state fan you seem to like them a lot?..... I don't care if i get my heart broken every year, and unless we have a clausen as quarterback, I will continue to be optimistic. but the clausen family is where i draw the line. oh and is your name Jim Hensley?

Well, I didn't find the poll on ESPN, but the "Blue Ribbon Yearbook Conference" predictions has the Vols second in the East, with Ainge first team offense and Hefney first team defense and Colquitt first team punter and Kenny O'Neal as the "Newcomer of the Year". So, it doesn't seem like we are being too awful disrespected.

These forums are wonderful ways to kill time before kickoff, but the only thing that counts is what takes place on the field. We have, as always it seems, an overwhelming potential--we just have to make it happen on the field, and that comes straight from the coaching staff.

Folks are saying that this is Erik's team, and I think that it is. His leadership will make or break this season and his legacy at UT.

GO BIG ORANGE

ROCKY TOP, YOU'LL ALWAYS BE, HOME SWEET HOME TO ME.... GOOD OLE ROCKY TOP, ROCKY TOP TENNESSEE.

I agree with zacurtis this is my team and anyone who calls themselves a fan and doesn't believe in this team needs to head on down to GA or AL and become an opposing fan.

But we could go too far in putting team success on Ainge's shoulders. Example: Peyton was a darn good qb but recall the silly charge that "he never beat the gators" ... seems like there were 30-40 guys around him that needed to produce as well. Still, I think Ainge will have a good year and the rest of the team also. Geaux Vawls!

Well said, BOA. Well said.

michael.tomasello#288491 writes:

I like the fact that Ainge has taken it upon himself to seek the leadership necessary to win..ie. drawing up plans on their own to simulate practice tempo for the young players on the team. Ainge and Mayo remind me of Al Wilson in that regard. Now let's see if the upperclassmen can turn it into WINS.

orangebloodgmc writes:

Does anybody know if Walter Fisher is 100% healthy now? Remember he and Bolden were just sophomores last year and Dan W. just a freshman. I think we can win with those 3 and Mapu, all presumably stronger than they were last yr. If we need more bodies in the rotation, then I bet we can get at least 2 of the following 4 to step up and contribute a little bit: Chase Nelson, Victor Thomas, Langley or Brimfield. If that's not enough, then I bet 270 lb. senior DE Reynolds could slide inside to spell them for a few reps. Folks can poor-mouth and set a low bar of expectations for this group, but I'm thinking we might be pleasantly surprised.

AllVol writes:

Knock on wood, but there does seem to be a quiet confidence bubbling up from this team. You can just feel something in the air. If/when every aspect of the team comes together, watch the hell out . . .

invisiblekid writes:

Guess it's time to get serious about checking on the website again. Talking about using the 3-4 is nice but I don't see it becoming a staple of the defense. I think the Vols will be facing many of the same challenges this year as last year, most importantly running the ball and stopping the run. There is a huge void to fill on the left side of the O line and, hopefully, Chris Scott is ready to step up. Defensively, it's the same song, different year. Bolden has to step up and be a force in the middle. We'll find out in a few short weeks.
