Baugh provide spark for U.S.

Vicky Baugh helped provide a spark when the U.S. Women’s U19 basketball team needed it most at the World Championship.

Baugh, a 6-foot-4 University of Tennessee signee from Sacramento, Calif., scored a key basket late to help the U.S. erase a three-point deficit en route to a 74-66 victory against Spain on Tuesday.

“This was the most physical and fastest team we’ve played and their game was similar to ours,” Baugh said after going 4-of-5 from the field for eight points in 13 minutes. “They have to be the toughest team we’ve faced so far.”

That didn’t stop the U.S. from improving to 5-0 in the tournament at Bratislava, Slovakia.

“We were focused for the game, but I think we were expecting to be able to just take off from the start,” Baugh said.

It didn’t quite work out that way.

Spain (3-2 held a 59-56 lead with 8:23 remaining.

Baugh and Jantel Lavender then scored key baskets and Jasmine Thomas hit a deep three to spark the U.S. to a 63-61 lead.

Lavender, an Ohio State signee who scored a game-high 28 points with 13 rebounds, added five more points down the stretch.

Angie Bjorklund, another UT signee, was 0-for-1 and had one turnover in seven minutes.

“Tonight was definitely a wake-up call,” Bjorklund said. “We learned we can’t just walk into a gym and expect to beat people by 50 points every time just because we have USA across our chest.”

The U.S. concludes second-round action today against the Group A first-place hosts from Slovakia (5-0).

CRVol,maybe you are perfect on your job,but I doubt it.You can not straddle the fence. You are either for the Vols or against them.As long as we have Fulmer I will be for him. When someone else takes over I will be behind that person also.I know there are things that need attention concerning the VOL football program but there is a lot to be said for the program also.So why not get behind the coach and put a zipper on your negative posts?

FEEL THE LOVE? Some staff was not retained..not a verbal but...I made a mistake by retaining these coaches.I personally like to hear an individual own up to their responsibility as much as you do. Coach Fulmer has done alot for our school and I think we will have a resurgence back to the top. I support them by encouraging them to dig deep for theirs and the players best. Negativity in my book has never been a strong motivator for the long haul. Short haul for that matter either.Ephesians 4:28-29 talks about speech that motivates /encourages. Again...GO VOLS!!!
