Baugh, Bjorklund help U.S. beat South Korea

Two future Lady Vols are doing their part in what has become a real team effort at the U19 World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Vicki Baugh and Angie Bjorklund, with 10 points each, were among eight players who finished in double figures as the U.S. team routed South Korea 113-69 Monday.

The U.S. (4-0) will play Spain (3-1) in its next game today.

“I think we have the chemistry now as a team that we know everyone’s style of play,” said Baugh. “I think that’s why everyone is able to score because we are comfortable on the court with our roles and each other.”

In addition to her scoring, Baugh blocked a shot early in the first quarter that sent the U.S. on a 22-6 run which basically put the game away early.

The UT players have been contributing to all four U.S. wins but not much with the offense until Monday.

“I feel like my shot was dropping a little better this game,” said Bjorklund, a 6-foot guard. “As I start getting my shots from the flow of the offense more and more, I think they'll drop even more. And when I did get it from an assists or through the flow of the offense, I felt more confident too.”

Baugh , a 6-4 post player, also collected six rebounds and blocked two shots. She’s looking forward to the challenge of a much stronger opponent.

“I'm definitely pumped up for Spain tomorrow,” Baugh said. “We want them back. The first time we played them in the exhibition tournament in the Canary Islands, their best player didn't play, the officials had an impact on the game and they have brought new players with them for this tournament. I feel like we have a wake-up call to give them.”

“We are a whole new team, “ added Bjorklund, “so I'm excited to see what happens.”
