$135M year for SEC; schools spilt $122M

DESTIN, Fla. -- The cash register rung long and loud for the SEC on the final day Friday of the league's annual spring business meetings.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive announced a record distribution of $122 million to the 12 league members, a 5.1 percent increase from the record $116.1 million distributed last year.

The league made $48.3 million from football television, $23.7 million from bowls, $13.2 million from the SEC football championship game, $12.3 from basketball television, $4.3 million from the SEC men's basketball tournament and $20.2 million from NCAA championships.

Not included in the $122 million was the $12.5 million retained by schools that played in bowl games and $720,000 divided among the 12 league schools by the NCAA for academic enhancement.

"That means we actually made $135 million," Slive said.

The SEC presidents also:

* Passed a rule effective Aug. 1 that each league school should have its athletic departments establish class-attendance policies. Each school can establish its individual policies, as well as supervision, enforcement and appropriate sanctions. These sanctions shall include suspension from competition. The policy shall be filed annually with the SEC office by Oct. 1.

* Will recommend to the NCAA for a vote into legislation that head coaches not be allowed to recruit off-campus each spring during the April 15-May 31 evaluation period.

"Our football coaches are all for this legislation," Slive said. "It will eliminate the scenario of head coaches bumping into prospects accidentally while on a prospect's high school campus during evaluation."

* Will recommend to the NCAA for a vote into legislation to prohibit football coaches from attending non-scholastic camps, clinics and combines. This proposal is to reduce recruiting travel costs and attempt to disassociate third parties in the recruiting process.
