Lee Humphrey’s taking his picture-perfect 3-point shot to the NBA after all.
The former Maryville High School star signed a free agent contract Friday to play for the Washington Wizards in the upcoming NBA Summer League.
“He leaves Sunday for Washington to start summer league practice on Monday,” Lee’s father Tony Humphrey said Friday. “They practice a week and then they go to Las Vegas to play July 6-15.”
Humphrey, the all-time leading scorer at Maryville and all-time leading 3-point shooter for the two-time defending national champion Florida Gators, hopes some impressive summer workouts land him an NBA contract.
“He’s excited about it, but what happens after that: Who knows?” Tony Humphrey said. “He’ll have to play well to get invited to a camp.
“If that doesn’t happen he’ll go ahead and look at European options.”
Lee didn’t hear his named called during Thurs
day’s NBA draft, but nothing fazed him as he watched five of his Florida teammates go in the 60-pick, two-round event.
He had actually been in Cleveland for a last-minute workout for the Cavaliers early Thursday.
“People have been calling to ask if Lee’s OK,” Humphrey said. “I just have to keep telling them he’s fine. He didn’t really expect to get drafted.
“He was just tickled for all the guys who did get drafted.”
Florida set a record with three players — Al Horford to Atlanta at No. 3, Corey Brewer to Minnesota at No. 7 and Joakim Noah to Chicago at No. 9 — taken in the first 10 picks.
Chris Richard went No. 41 to Minnesota and Taurean Green No. 52 to Portland.
Humphrey and the Wizards will play five summer league games beginning 4 p.m. July 10 against Sacramento.
They play Detroit 6 p.m. July 11, Houston 10 p.m. on July 13, Cleveland at 8 p.m. on July 14 and Milwaukee at 4 p.m. on July 15.
“Europe is kind of where I thought he’d end up all along, but as he has gone through these workouts, they’ve given him some hope he might be able to catch on with an NBA team,” his father said. “As long as there’s hope, he’ll keep going for it.
“He has had some good, positive feedback.
