UT targets Stone Mountain's Reaves

Tennessee and Charles Reaves II seem like a match destined to happen.

The Vols have had a scholarship offer on the table for the 6-0, 177-pounder from Stone Mountain (Ga.) High School since last summer. Reaves, is projected to play wide receiver or cornerback, has been a fan much longer than that.

"They're an excellent football team to watch," said Reaves, who was recently selected to play in the U.S. Army All American Bowl in San Antonio. "When they play, they go for it all. I like to go for it all when I play too.

"Tennessee is the highest favorite. Then, it's Florida. Then, it's Georgia Tech."

Reaves has been offered a scholarship by several Atlantic Coast Conference and SEC schools. He'll surely benefit from the experience of his father, Charles Reaves, who is also the coach at Stone Mountain.

"It's been a pleasant experience," said the elder Reaves, who is also a UT football fan. "I've been doing it (going through recruiting) for awhile but I've been doing if for other peoples' children. Now, I get to do it for my own son.

"It's kind of exciting."

Reaves has played receiver and cornerback in high school. UT coach Phillip Fulmer and receivers coach Trooper Taylor are in charge of his recruitment.

The Reaves family is plenty familiar with Knoxville thanks to frequent AAU basketball trips early in his high school career. The last time they made the trip here was last summer during a seven-on-seven camp. UT's coaches were plenty impressed.

Given his fandom, it wouldn't have been a surprise had Reaves committed right then. Now, he's just trying to take it all in.

"It's a tough decision," he said.

Reaves said he plans to announce his decision by midseason, but could hold it for the bowl in January.

Reaves caught 68 passes for over 900 yards and rushed 42 times for 625 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. At cornerback, he registered 49 tackles and two interceptions.
