Hooker: UT staking out Georgia again
I probably don't need to remind you what key roles Georgians Cosey Coleman, Deon Grant, Mercedes Hamilton, Steve Johnson, Jamal Lewis and Fred White had in UT's national championship run in 1998. Since then, the Peach State has proved a mixed bag.
Sure, there have been contributors in this decade, such as defensive linemen Jason Hall and Ed Kendrick and offensive lineman Sean Young. But, plenty of other prospects have never reached their potential.
Quarterback A.J. Suggs was beat out by Casey Clausen. Athlete Derrick Tinsley was banged up often during his career and never found a niche in UT's offense. Tailback Jabari Davis didn't come close to matching his recruiting hype.
The Vols have signed a handful of Georgia players over the past couple of years, such as kicker Chad Cunningham, offensive lineman Cam Mayo, athlete Stephaun Raines (who is attending junior college because of academic shortcomings) and linebacker LaMarcus Thompson. None of the players have become a contributor yet.
Inky Johnson seemed poised to be the next in a line of multi-year starting UT cornerbacks from Georgia. Then, Johnson suffered a career ending injury last season. Safety Jarod Parrish is competing with several others to fill a depleted secondary.
Georgia is also where recruiting heartbreak has resided. Remember the Stone Mountain duo? Linebackers Perry Riley and Kelvin Sheppard, told UT's coaches and the media they would sign with UT in 2006 before spurning the Vols for LSU.
With that disappointment set aside, there appears to be the onset of a Georgia revival in Knoxville.
UT will likely start two offensive linemen from Georgia, Chris Scott and Anthony Parker, this fall. Another super prepster, defensive back Eric Berry, is on his way to Knoxville after signing with UT in February.
And there should be more on the way. The Vols already have a commitment from one of the top running backs in Georgia, Tauren Poole from Stephens County High School in Toccoa, Ga. UT also has an inside track to Berry's former high school teammate, cornerback Terrance Parks, from Creekside in Fairburn, Ga.
A commitment could come soon from another Georgia player. Defensive back Charles Reaves II told GoVolsXtra.com last week that UT leads for his services.
Name Game: The best name I've ever heard in recruiting surfaced recently. Yourhigness Morgan is a linebacker from South Sumter High in Bushnell, Fla.
That's right. Yourhighness. Now, don't you think his teachers hate calling him that?
"Yourhigness, please stop talking during class!" I can easily imagine a professor exclaiming.
That alone would make me want to get into trouble. I can't help but wonder if there's a younger Morgan on the recruiting horizon. Mylord Morgan certainly has a ring to it.
Either way, they'd both have me beat in the name department.
