Ex-Vol Smith charged with evading arrest

Reportedly fled scene after crashing car into embankment

Former University of Tennessee wide receiver Bret Smith turned himself in to authorities Wednesday evening on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and evading arrest, according to the Knox County Sheriff's Office.

Smith, a Warren, Ark., native, was booked around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and immediately posted $1,000 bail.

The charges stem from a one-car accident early Sunday morning.

According to an accident report, Smith's 1999 Mercury Marquis hit an embankment around 4:40 a.m., which sent the vehicle across the roadway and into a small tree and concrete retaining wall at a residence on Bakertown Road in West Knoxville.

When officers arrived shortly after the accident, Smith fled on foot.

No one was injured.

In its report, the Knox County Sheriff's Office could not determine whether drugs or alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Smith, who did not return a message about the incident left Wednesday night, declined comment when reached on his cell phone Thursday.

Smith was one of nine Vols invited to the NFL combine in February but went undrafted last weekend.

Despite having talks with at least one NFL team since the draft, he has not yet signed a free-agent contract.

Smith was deemed academically ineligible by UT for the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, which would have been his last game at Tennessee.

He finished third on the team with 39 receptions for 453 yards and five touchdowns last season.

All told, the former Parade All-American had 1,110 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns in his career.
