HomeFootball Recruiting

Jarboe likes UT’s ability to produce

Josh Jarboe expects Tennessee’s successful football history to continue.

The wide receiver from Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, Ga., said he favors five schools: UT, Georgia, Florida, LSU and Ohio State. All have offered him a scholarship.

The 6-foot-3, 192-pound Jarboe said he placed UT in his top five because the Vols have been able to produce talented quarterbacks and wide receivers.

"With the tradition, they’ve always done it and they’re going to keep doing it because it’s always been working for them," he said. "That makes me want to come to them because they’ve been good."

Jarboe is being recruited by running backs coach Kurt Roper.

"I like to be a playmaker," Jarboe said. "I like to get the ball and give the fans and give the people what they want."

Jarboe said he watched how the Vols used their receivers last year. He saw an offense that can take advantage of his skills.

"They keep three or four wide receivers on the field all the time," he said. "That’s what we do at Cedar Grove. That would give me more of a chance at playing and being on the field more."

One hurdle for UT in the recruitment of Jarboe is early playing time. The Vols signed eight players in the 2007 class who could play wide receiver.

Jarboe said he plans to look for a team that will allow him to play immediately.

"I don’t want to be redshirted," he said. "I want to play as soon as I can."

Jarboe said Georgia and Florida have shown the strongest interest. Mark Richt and Urban Meyer, the two schools’ head coaches, recently visited Jarboe.

Their appearance let Jarboe know he’s a wanted man.

"It was special," Jarboe said. "It means they really want me to play if the head coach comes."

A common factor among the schools on Jarboe’s list is their ability to send receivers to the NFL.

"I want to go pro," he said, "but if I don’t, technology and business is what I want to do. If it’s a good team that mostly has wide receivers that are going pro, that’s where I might want to go."

Jarboe said he plans to take unofficial visits this summer to UT, Florida and LSU to get a better feel for their campuses. Georgia Tech is the only school Jarboe has visited.
