Despite commitment to UT, Douglas considering visits

South Carolina, Alabama among possibilities

Aaron Douglas said he's not considering any other schools besides Tennessee. But that won't limit his official visit schedule this fall.

"I still might take a visit just to get out there and look around," the 6-foot-6, 245-pound tight end from Maryville High School said. "It's not going to mean anything if I go to a college and take an official there."

UT's first commitment of the 2008 class said he's considering a visit to South Carolina (where he was born) Alabama and Southern Cal.

"I'd like to go to USC just because I've never been to California," Douglas said. "I've been watching USC over the years."

Aside from mulling a fall itinerary, Douglas seems to have shut down his recruitment for now. Several schools have pursued, but to little avail.

"I used to get text messages but I don't really anymore," Douglas said. "I didn't pay attention to them."

Therefore, the calls and text messages slowed to a trickle.

Shortly after his commitment to UT, Ole Miss was the first to challenge the Vols with an offer.

With an offer in hand, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier encouraged Douglas to travel to Columbia along with Alcoa High School receiver Brian Sommer earlier this year. Alabama sent a coach to Maryville during the spring evaluation period last month to officially extend Douglas an offer.

As for the Trojans, they've just been trying to get involved.

"They've sent me about three questionnaires," Douglas said. "I haven't even sent them back."

UT's coaches probably won't be too pleased if Douglas decides to take official visits to their SEC rivals, Alabama and South Carolina, or the decade's most successful program in the country, Southern Cal.

Still, UT has a strong legacy on its side. Douglas' father, David, played offensive tackle at UT 1982-85. His mother, Karla Horton Douglas, started for the Lady Vols' 1987 national championship basketball team, and his uncle, Steve, lettered at defensive tackle in 1983 and '84.

"I'm not going to find anything better for me," the youngest Douglas said. "Tennessee, that's where I've got to go."

Douglas said he's tried to help recruit other prospects to UT. He might get a chance to lure even more to Knoxville very soon. Douglas was one of 400 nominees for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl to be held in San Antonio in January.
