Vols have some new speed for 2007

Tennessee was looking for speed and explosiveness in the 2007 recruiting class. The Vols desperately needed athletic, skill position type players that could play any number of spots -- mainly wide receiver or defensive back.

While no one will knows just how good those 2007 athletes will be until they arrive on campus this summer, here's a glimpse of what some are doing in track this spring:

  • Darnius Moore, Tatum (Texas) High School: Moore broke the class 2A record in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles with a 13.69 and a 36.99, respectively.

He also placed second in the long jump (23-feet, 7 A 3/4 inches) and ran third in Tatum's 4x400 relay that finished in 3 minutes, 20.53 seconds. Moore scored 31 of Tatum's 64 points, which was good enough for the 2A team title.

  • Lennon Creer, Tatum: A teammate of Moore, he ran the third leg of Tatum's 4x100 relay at the state meet that finished in third place in 42.01 and ran the second leg on the 4x400 relay.
  • Eric Berry, Creekside High School in Fairburn, Ga.: UT's highest-rated prospect won the AAAA long jump title at 23-5A 1/2. In statewide competition, Berry finished third (10.72) in the 100 and second (21.79) in the 200.
  • Gerald Jones, Millwood High in Oklahoma City: UT's highest rated receiver wasn't planning on taking part in any events other than the long jump during his state track meet. But when a teammate didn't recover quickly enough from wisdom tooth surgery, Jones was forced into duty.

That didn't seem to matter. Jones ran his leg of the 4x800 in 2:05. Jones finished second in the long jump at 22-3.
