Tennessee finished second in each category. Georgia, last year's overall winner, was third.
Florida won six league championships: football, men's basketball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics and women's tennis (a tie with Georgia).
Tennessee won five titles: women's basketball; softball; women's indoor track; men's golf; men's outdoor track.
The award is presented by The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, which includes 14 newspapers throughout the Southeast. Scoring is tabulated on 12 points for a first-place finish in a sport, 11 for second place, etc.
Florida averaged 9.72 points per sport in 16 sports, Tennessee 9.40 in 15. The average is the school's point total divided by the number of sports it fields.
Breaking it down by gender, Tennessee's women averaged 9.63 points per sport to 9.14 for the men.
The Lady Vols had won the women's competition the past three years.
The championship is determined by regular-season standings in football, basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, softball and soccer. It is determined by the postseason tournament (or meet) in track, cross-country, golf and swimming.
Rowing doesn't figure in the standings because only UT and Alabama field teams.
The New York Times group took over tabulations from the SEC office in 1994-95. Florida has won the overall title every year since except for Georgia's victory in 2005-06.
