HomeFootball Recruiting

Memphis' Barrett Jones has become popular

Talk about jumping on the bandwagon.

At last check, Barrett Jones from Evangelical Christian School in Memphis had a handful of scholarship offers. Tennessee Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Vanderbilt were the first to jump on board. But that was in March.

Now, overcrowding is quickly becoming the issue.

Jones, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound athlete, who could play tight end, defensive tackle or offensive line in college, has to take a second to recall all the offers he's received. The handful of programs listed above has recently surged to 17 schools.

It's an honor to be offered by lots of different people," Jones said.

Georgia Tech and Stanford are the two most recent to throw their helmets in the ring for the honor student, who just happens to be one of the top prospects in the south. Florida, Louisville, North Carolina, Miami, UCLA, Michigan State and Clemson have also officially extended invites.

Asked if any newcomer stands out, one of UT's most hated rivals is mentioned.

"Florida obviously stands out because they won the national championship last year. That's kind of a big one -- the prestige of their program," Jones said. "They have a football and a basketball championship.

"They're a good school right now."

So, what would it be like leaving the state of Tennessee and volunteering for duty as a Gator?

"No comment," Jones said with a chuckle.

Florida isn't the only newcomer that stands out. Jones said Miami and LSU have also caught his eye.

"My plan is to narrow it down to five by the end of the summer," Jones said.

With all the competition, UT's coaches certainly have their work cut out for them. The Vols are led by running backs coach Kurt Roper, who is in charge of recruiting Jones.

"Coach Roper is still recruiting me and texting me a lot," Jones said. "I've talked to coach (Phillip) Fulmer. He came to my school.

"Tennessee still has as good a chance as anyone."
