Vols score big upset versus No. 2 Auburn

John Trembley has seen many exciting swims at Ray Bussard Pool, but one of the final dual meets in the UT Student Aquatic Center Facility will be among his favorites.

Trembley's 11th-ranked Vols knocked off No. 2-ranked Auburn, which has won five consecutive NCAA men's swimming championships, 170-127 Friday afternoon.

Bussard, UT's coach 1967-88, watched the upset victory.

"They (Auburn) came into a tough environment because the pool is shallow and the home crowd was enthusiastic," Trembley said.

The Vols (4-0) struck quickly, winning the opening race (200-yard medley relay) in 1:27.56 seconds, then freshman Geoff Sanders followed to win the 500-freestyle (9:16.06) by more than 10 seconds.

Jonas Persson, a transfer from Arizona, stole the show by winning the 100 and 200 freestyles in times of 43.62 and 1:36.40, respectively. He capped it off with a 42.79 100-yard split in the 400 freestyle relay. Persson's times met NCAA qualifying standards.

"In the 100 freestyle, Persson's time was incredible," Trembley said. "I really did not see him swimming that fast today."

Senior and team captain Michael Wolfe splashed to victories in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke. His times of 1:45.54 in the backstroke and 1:46.12 in the butterfly qualify him for the NCAA Championships.

Senior Octavio Alesi posted winning times of 20.34 in the 50 freestyle and 48.17 in the 100 butterfly.

Freshman Brad Craig recorded the only other winning time in the 200 breaststroke( 2:00.36).

More Swimming: Christine Magnuson of the Lady Vols and the Vols' Wolfe were named National Collegiate swimmers of the week.

Magnuson won three individual events and swam on a winning relay in a meet with Kentucky and South Carolina. Wolfe won two individual events and was on a winning relay against Louisville.

Soccer: Tennessee's chances for the SEC East Division championship and the regular-season title were lost in 3-0 setback at Georgia (15-2-2, 8-1-2 SEC).

Tennessee (13-3-3, 8-2-1) awaits the outcome of Sunday's Florida-Vanderbilt match to learn its seeding for the SEC tournament next week. A Florida loss or tie would give the Lady Vols the No. 2 seed.

Volleyball: Tennessee's Nikki Fowler recorded the first triple-double in school history with 19 kills, 18 digs and 19 assists, but Tennessee (9-14, 4-11 SEC) still lost in five games at Ole Miss (21-6, 10-5) - 30-20, 27-30, 31-29, 27-30, 15-9.

Men's Tennis: UT's Boris Conkic and Davey Sandgren advanced to the semifinals in singles at the UNLV Fall Classic.
