Sophomore libero Chloe Goldman set the single-season record for digs at Tennessee, but it was not enough against LSU (10-6, 11-5 SEC) in a 30-17, 30-22, 31-29 loss in Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday .
"I was disappointed in our team's effort and focus in the first two games of this match," UT coach Rob Patrick said. "We did not play defense at a high enough intensity level to be successful against a team as athletic as LSU. We have to address our setting situation so that we can run our entire offense, which we are running at about 40 percent effectiveness right now."
With a team-high 21 digs in the match, Goldman has 510 and passed the previous record of 506 set by Amy Morris in 2005.
"Chloe played a very brave match, as she is limited athletically with some injuries that she is battling through," Patrick said. "This record is a direct result of how hard she plays each and every match. Amy Morris was one of, if not the best libero I have ever seen play. I would never have thought that I would be blessed to have another defensive player as outstanding as her. If there is one person who deserves this record, it is Chloe because of the heart and desire she plays with at all times. I am very proud of her and she has not even scratched the surface of her full potential."
Sophomore Kylie Marshall added 12 digs for the Lady Vols (9-15, 4-12).
Freshman Nikki Fowler and sophomore Leah Hinkey had 11 kills apiece and Hinkey had team highs in hitting percentage (.304 ) and blocks (five). Fowler also had seven digs and four assists.
Men's Tennis: UT freshman Boris Conkic won the singles title with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory over UNLV's Luca Barlocchi at the UNLV Fall Classic in Las Vegas.
Conkic and teammate Davey Sandgren, who advanced to the championship match in doubles, had to withdraw from the tournament after Sandgren was unable to play. Sandgren turned his ankle during his singles semifinal match on Saturday and was unable to effectively move on it to play Sunday.
Women's Tennis: Samantha Orlin of Tennessee lost 6-0, 6-3 to second-seeded Cameron Ellis of Georgia in the third flight singles championship at the SEC Coaches Tournament in Auburn, Ala.
The Lady Vols concluded the fall session with a 40-22 record in singles and 28-10 mark in doubles.
Women's Soccer: The Lady Vols were seeded third for SEC soccer tournament in Orange Beach, Ala. UT (13-3-2) will play No. 6 South Carolina (13-5-2) on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
The Lady Vols beat South Carolina 3-2 in overtime on Sept. 27.
