Guy to visit, down to 3 teams

Tennessee is tied in a three-team race for the services of Lawrence Guy.

The defensive end from Western High School in Las Vegas said he is evenly considering UT, Oklahoma and Arizona State. Guy has taken official visits to Oklahoma and Arizona State and plans to visit UT this weekend.

The 6-foot-6, 275-pound Guy, who favored UT in September, said he’s watched the 5-3 Vols underachieve this season.

“They could have done more than they did this year,” he said. “They could have been a big team and played for the national championship but things happen. They’re still good for a bowl game.”

Guy said UT’s disappointing losses this season have not hurt the Vols’ chances of landing him. He blamed their losses on missed opportunities, especially in the 41-17 loss at Alabama on Oct. 20.

“They should have won that one,” he said.

Guy said he has ignored criticism of UT by the national media, such as ESPN. He said it doesn’t help him to pay attention to it.

“I just don’t really listen to that stuff,” he said. “I don’t listen to ESPN because they don’t really tell me how they’re doing.”

The main reason UT hasn’t remained Guy’s leader is the Vols’ campus is the only one he hasn’t seen.

Guy had planned to visit UT on Oct. 6 and then again this upcoming weekend but twice had to re-schedule.

His trip to Oklahoma on Oct. 13 was his first official visit, and a good one.

“It was a calm place, a football town,” Guy said. “It was a real nice place. It was incredible.

“Everybody’s into football there. I’ve never seen it like that before.”

Guy’s only other official visit was to Arizona State last weekend. He said the Sun Devils offer him a chance to stay closer to home and earn immediate playing time.

“They told me I could start as a defensive end,” he said. “They said I’d have a good chance of playing next year.”

UT is another school that could offer an opportunity to play next year. The Vols have shown a strong need for help on the defensive line.

Guy said the opportunity to play early will be a factor, but his main focus is on finding the right fit.

“I just want to go to a school and play some football,” he said. “That’s really it. I just want to go to school and be a force and make some plays and try to be an All-American.”

Guy said he plans to make his decision the week after he visits UT.

Step into Neyland in front of 105,000 fans and watch the " Parting of the T ". You will not find that at Oklahoma or Arizona State. Come play in the best conference in football.

Well you might start, and you might not.. if he thinks OK football is OK, I'm sure he'll find ASU definitely boring.. so now we have a 50-50 shot.. but anyone that tells some freshman they'll start for 4 years is absolutely not truefull.. I hope UT see's what he is, whether he can pass or not, stay out of trouble, and be a team player.. he sounds a bit cocky to me, west coast style cocky..

And Mr. Guy (as I'm sure you read the papers), look in the record books and see how many defensive ends from OU or ASU went onto the pros and actually were all stars.. Doug Atkins and Reggie White got here to UT and left first..and a bunch of others in between..

Tennessee is not too shabby of a place to get ready for the Pro's, or just simply play at or above the leve you're able too..

Posted by inquiry on November 4, 2007 at 9:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Let's see, Ken Delong, Austin Denney, Albert Hainsworth, Jack Reynolds, Steve Kiner, Derrick Weatherford, Glover what's his name (monsterman), Bobby Majors, Dick Evey, John Henderson, and of course, Bill Bates..

Shhhh movol77 this is a ruse to see if Mr. Guy can read first and has any idea of our history at UT who played on Defense and later in the pros :)..Ask ASU or OU what there list is compared to UT's..

Oklahoma is a "Calm Place?"; a "Nice Place?" HA! I'd love to see the look on that kid's face when he sees the Tailgating on Game Day, the Vol Navy, The Vol Walk, and then 107K screaming Orange Crazies when the "T" opens up and the PA announcer declares: "IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE.! That kid is going do a 3-day call to Boob Stoops & Dennis Erickson at halftime: "Sorry Coach: I'm gonna be a Tennessee Volunteer! Go Vols!" Remember the "Ballad of Condredge Holloway?"

Movol77, you'd think this kid would have read just a bit more about Knoxville, while growing up in Las Vegas... I was born and grew up in Knoxville and worked in Las Vegas (backwards).. I bet I know more about Las Vegas and know more people oout there than he does (BET Movol77?)

My point is, any person that follows college football with a real perspective, knows you have ups and downs, but the integrity of the program, their overall approach to student-athletes and fan committment is hard to beat at Tennessee.

inquiry:
I believe you will find that Austin Denney, who I went to high school with, was an outstanding tight end and pass receiver at UT. He then went on to play for Buffalo for several years, also on the offensive side of the ball.

We can always use top-notch defensive linemen. Chavis' defense works best when there's a good push from the D-Line.

Tennessee does turn out a lot of players to the professional football league. UT is in the strongest conference in college football. As far as we need him for us to win, I hope your right but I have been reading these comments for years. We need a change bad in coaching, do not care what some will say about that cause if you can not see we need a change I really believe your eyes are full of oranges. Football brings in a lot or revenue and I believe the AD looks at that. Now since BB is coming on maybe things will change in FB. I like for us to be #1 just as bad as anyone but something has to give for us to win a conference. I do not see how in the world we can stop McFadden with no defense and the offense has got to have ball control to keep him off the field. We will see Sat.
