ALL other Stats are illusions, sometimes they aid explanations, often NOT!
More than Macfadden will be the 'TO ratio' in my opinion.

Here's to hoping some crazy Arkansas fan, booster, or parent breaks into the locker room and locks McFadden and Jones into their car just to get Houston Nutt fired.

Hope that McFadden and Jones miss the team charter.
But on a more realistic note we need to have the defense that played against GA. on the field. Hope that is the defense that shows up. As much phooey that they have had to endure all yr you would think that they would be playing with more of a chip on there shoulder. Let this be the game that we can finally freaking tackle someone.
Go VOLS!!!

The Hogs will put up 35 because the defense can not stop any offense that is different than a 1982 pro style offense. Afterall, that is what they practice against all week every week. The question is can the Vols put up 36?

I remember back about 22 or so years ago, a fellow named Bo Jackson came to town. It was about the same scenario. Dale Jones (I believe it was) knocked the snot out of him in the first quarter and he sat out most of the game.
Just hit him.

Our offense will be our best defense. If we can control the ball and, thusly, the clock, we keep McFadden/Jones on the bench.

Pigs can't fly and neither can their offense. Just stop the run on third down and you've got the game in hand. South Carolina seemed to be in position on the few passes Arkansas did throw. Hold your position on the initial misdirection, identify the carrier, and fly to the ball.
estillspgsvol writes:
Discipline football, hold your primary position and gang tackle the football. It's a simple game that just as it always has been. Be the most physical football team on the field, and play fundamental football. The new style offense that teams run is not a new invention of the wheel, it's just option football that you have to account for every option of each play, discipline, discipline, discipline!!!! Go Vols, all the way to Atlanta!

Get some of our dog house, suspended, and maybe a dismissed player or 2 to take Mcfadden 'clubben'. If that doesn't work do some 'clubben' on defense.

what will have to happen? Ark will have to play their worst football of the season, and Tn will have to play their best. It is hard enough stopping one good back, but trying to stop 2 is almost impossible. But then agian, it can be done. Its not like Ark is undefeated.

hire the Titans defense Hit Him? do you think no one else has tried that? We don't have a defensive player that is man enough to hit him and get his attention
oldbasshead writes:
Each team that has beaten Arkansas this season has held McFadden to under 200 yards. Two of those teams scored over 40 points. So it would seem that the Vols will need to score big will holding McFadden to under 200 yards. That's a tall order for the Vols defense.

What will have to happen for UT to beat Arkansas?
It is simple really. Ball control. If UT can control the ball as they did in the whole game against ULL or the 1st against USC they will win this game. They will have to do it for the full 4 qtr.s. AK defense is not that good so UT needs to establish a solid running game to control the clock and the game. McFaddin will get his yards but he seems to have trouble holding onto the ball. Creating key turnovers will also help keep the momentum on UT’s side.
UT has the ability to accomplish all this but as we have seen too often this year they have underperformed in big game situations. Will this one be different? As a lifelong Vol fan I truly want to see this team pay a big game like they played the homecoming game.

Does anyone remember what DEFENSE means??? We've tried now for years to outscore the opponent and it only works marginally well...with the biggest shortfalls coming at some of our most visible games, i.e., bowl games with Clemson, Auburn, Penn St., etc., etc., etc. At the first series when we are stopped, the momentum inevitably changes and we go downhill. Maybe we should all be thinking: What would General Neyland do??
Defense needs to be very aggressive...we need to be recruiting excellent defensive linemen. We need to incorporate blitz packages throughout the defensive scheme. The prevent defense is fine some of the time. However, any team in the SEC who is allowed to inch down the field in 5 to 10 to 15 yard increments can probably score SOMETHING inside the red zone...even with a shift in our defensive posture at that point.
Our offense is good. Its obvious that this is where our focus, in recent years, has been. This plan has and is really hurting us now. Defense needs to give them a chance to win without the pressure of thinking we have to "outscore our opponent" in every game.
Where is the hunger, the drive, the pride on defense??
I would bench every first-string defensive player that didn't reach a certain percentage following a game. Bring in the guys that want to make plays -- particularly if we drop the Arkansas game. Yes, McFadden will be hard to slow down, but our defense, with the exception of the game against CAL, seems to be better at stopping the run than the pass. This, of course, brings us to another issue involving our lack of pass rushing skills...that's a discussion for another time!
We also need a strong leader on defense, cut out of the same mold as a former Vol great... Al Wilson. Are you telling me that after years of recruiting classes in the top 10, we don't have good defensive players???
If we don't, then our recruiting focus needs to change.
DEFENSE is our problem.
The game has changed…not only on offense, but on DEFENSE. We must, at this point, focus on a more aggressive defensive scheme. We won't last long in this new, strong SEC without it!
PureOrange writes:
We need to play to win instead of playing to keep from losing. Take chances. Do the unexpected instead of being so predictable.
Short crossing patterns to keep the ball moving and wear down their defense. Use the passing game to open up the run instead of being so bull-headed and trying to run to open up the pass to the point we are out of time and our defense (which is weak to being with) is worn down.
ellisonfamily writes:
We MUST keep the ball a lot. This means that, not only with Eric Ainge have to have a good game, but so will Arian Foster and Montario Hardesty. We will probably want to score 40 points (S.C. scored almost that and still lost), as well as playing hard run defense. If they beat us, make them do it passing. Arkansas RB's will have good games. They will get their yardage, but we must at least keep them under control (McFadden - under 200; Jones - under 100). Don't forget about Jones.
FWBVol writes:
Yes, Arkansas can score points. But their defense is suspect as well. Alabama hung 41 points on them, Kentucky 42 and South Carolina 36. The key is slowing down the dynamic duo, not necessarily stopping them. I think we need to hold Arkansas to 250 yards team rushing to have a good shot. However, I still think we can win if they rush for more than that. As others have pointed out, our offense can be the best defense. We must establish our on run and then take control of the clock. To some fans it might be boring football, but pounding the rock still is good sound football. The General said three things happen when you throw the football and two of them are bad. No cracks about the UT secondary, please. I know they are coming though.
Until they do something to change the way the clock is resolved after an incomplete pass, such as starting the clock after the ball is marked rather than on the snap, the best way to control a game the clock is with the run.
Just line up, hit em in the mouth and play football the old-fashion, rough and tumble way, and I think UT wins.

arkansas dont show up - mcfadden/jones get suspended - in other words AINT GONNA HAPPEN - got to have a defense which is something we DONT have
west_tn_volfan writes:
We held him under 200 yards last year and we got killed. Ball control offense and lots of points is the only way we have a chance. A few turnovers would also help, but the way they run the ball, they can score as quickly as alot of passing teams. They aren't a grind it out running team, they are a fast break running team. I think it will take a better game than we played against Ga. to beat them.
Go Vols

Spending another 15 minutes on tackling should do the trick. Winning the turnover margin and going up by 21 early could help as well by putting the swine in catch-up mode.

Last time I checked Arkansas wasn't undefeated and #1 in the BCS standings. I don't care if he runs for 300 yards against the D as long as UT scores more points it won't matter. The Hogs D isn't exactly the second coming of the '85 Bears. They can't pass for anything so let their RB's run, just score more. All of this nonsense about them losing their helmets or getting suspended is a bunch of phooey. If its next Sunday and the stats say UT gave up 360 yards and Mcfadden /Jones have over 300 it may look pretty but if the score is 38-35 UT then who really cares?
tnbanker_govols writes:
I believe we can stop the run early but eventually, McFadden will run effectively against our defense. As crazy as it may sound, it is vital that the offense execute big plays early and come out firing on all cylinders. A quick 14-0 lead for the Vols will help take the run out of the playbook for Arkansas. And after we get the lead, WE DON"T NEED TO LAY DOWN AND BE CONTENT WITH A LEAD!!! Also, time of possession will be so critical in this game. Our offense must maintain control in this game. As for the defense, they'll have to play over their heads.
firefulmer (Inactive) writes:
Keep Fulmer, Chavis, Slade from coaching. Stranger things have happened, but based on previous games, this will probably be another embarassment for UT.
DennisVols writes:
UT has shown they have the ability to stop a high quality running back (Knowshon of UGA) This past weekend his totals were 2nd only to Hershel Walker for a freshman at GA. That is pretty high company to be in. UT held him to under 80 yards this year.
The only question will be if we see that defense or the other one that has shown up more often than not.
Lets not let our want of a new coaching staff to blind us of seeing the fact that UT can win this game. With 3 games remaining we do control winning the SEC east. UF and Meyers do not, Richt and GA do not, Spurrier and USC do not, Rich Brooks and UK do not.
As hard a pill as that may be to swallow that makes UT the best team in the east going into this weekend. Previous scores do not matter only the number of wins and loses in a season matter as to who plays in Atlanta.
You find yourself struggling with wanting the Vols to win against replacing Fulmer.
As a true fan I will always chose to pull for this team to win no matter who the coach is.

well the last time I checked Miss St couldnt pass and neither could Ala. and this defense made them look like all american QBs.
and its for sure Tenn isnt undefeated and #1 in the BCS standings. I think Tenn has tried to out score every team we have faced that was good and it didnt work , some place they have to have help from the defense, which we dont have.
we had problems running, passing and scoring on South Carolina (2nd half) and Ark just made it look easy against them. The odds are not in our favor , we have made Jackson , Tebow , Parker & Hall look like Heisman canadates and now its Mcfaddens turn.

I never said UT was great, undefeated, #1 or any other descriptive word you want to use. Arkansas is the most one dimensional team UT will face all year. I may have missed something but didn't UT beat Swiss St.? Anywho, all I'm saying is I could care less if he runs for 500 yards as long as UT has more at the end. I never said it was a sure thing. McFadden is already the best player in college football, what's the shame in him getting a bunch of yards if, I said IF, UT wins the game?

Given how this season has gone (see Cal, Fla and Ala) IF UT wins ugly the next three weekends I don't see how anyone can complain. And I'm not talking about all the Fire Fulmer Fans out there. In the end if this team goes 9-3 and goes to the SEC Championship game that would be fairly amazing all things considered. So no, I don't care if this week its 42-41, next week 31-30 and the last game 55-54, as long as they are "W's" it don't matter. What's the likely hood of that happening? Who knows, probably not great, but given what's happened in the 3 biggest games so far, I never would have thought they'd control their own destiny on 11/5.
injunvol writes:
keep it simple - just score more points than they do and we win - just hope fulmer can figure this out before kickoff

ilove No they are good football players but I noticed you left off Parker and he isnt top quality and you really havent heard of Jackson doing anything after the Tenn game and these other teams seem to be able to slow Tebow and Hall down. Who has Ten def. shut down period ? Ga and thats it.
I am just saying this def. cant stop a cold and I hope we win and shut Mcfadden down but I just dont think its going to happen. we cant put 8 in the box and make them beat us with the pass , cause they will be able to do that.we are screwed either way. go back to Miss St and Ala.

It's easy to see how the naysayers (heck, I'm two steps from being one myself) can say that there's no chance, write it in L and move on. But winning against Arkansas is not that hard. Make their QB have to throw and make McFadden earn every single yard. This defense can do it - will they is another question. They did it against Georgie which is a much better team the Arkansas. The did against Georgia with a swarming defense we haven't seen again this year. Will they swarm this Saturday - if they do we can hold Arkansas below 20 points. If we don't swarm to the ball, we better score on every possession and go for every 4th down no matter how far because they are going to move the ball at will; makes no difference if their drive is 80 yards or 40 yards.

In the first half, let small dbs like Hefney and Rogan sit this one out, Vinson too (but Rogan still return kicks). Put McKenzie in at safety. Berry and Willingham at the corners. Add 1 more lb with enough speed to sometimes drop off into coverage: Myers-White who was recruited as a safety or Lamarcus Thompson who has been registering open-field tackles every week.
I would change it up, put at least one more in the box and dare them to beat me with something other than their bread and butter running. They can be stopped but not by us just saying, well, we'll play a little harder.

Thanks, Touchdown. I doubt we'll actually do it. But I wonder how the Auburn defense held the hawgs to 7 pts? Did they keep more than 7 in the box? Dunno.
