Arkansas expected to be without two safeties

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas’ secondary is expected to be thinner than usual Saturday against No. 22 Tennessee.

Starting free safety Kevin Woods continued to miss practice Thursday because of a dislocated shoulder that was aggravated in last Saturday’s win over South Carolina.

Woods is questionable, but he’ll make the trip to Knoxville.

“I don’t think we can count on Kevin this week,” Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring said. “I think it would be a stretch to say he’s going to be there.”

Woods has played in all nine of Arkansas’ games this season, starting the past seven. But sophomore Rashaad Johnson has been getting more work in practice this week in anticipation of Woods not being ready by Saturday.

Junior Dallas Washington and redshirt freshman Ramon Broadway have also been practicing at safety, though Arkansas coach Houston Nutt is holding out hope on Woods returning.

“He’s probably in the worst shape of them (injured players),” Nutt said.

Backup strong safety Walner Leandre is also expected to miss Saturday’s game because he’s attending his father’s funeral in Haiti.

Court Rejects E-Mail Request: The Arkansas Supreme Court rejected a request to order Arkansas to preserve evidence regarding e-mails critical of former quarterback Mitch Mustain.

The state’s highest court, however, agreed to stay Washington County Circuit Judge Mark Lindsay’s order finding attorney Eddie Christian Jr. in contempt of court for engaging in prohibited discovery over the e-mails. Justices also stayed an order preventing Christian from disclosing any information he obtained from the discovery.

John David Terry, who was represented by Christian, last month appealed Lindsay’s dismissal of his suit against university Chancellor John White and university system president B. Alan Sugg. Lindsay called the case “meritless.”

Terry claims public money was misused because White had Nutt investigate the e-mail. Terry’s lawsuit alleged that White shouldn’t have had Nutt investigate the e-mail because it was sent to Mustain by Razorbacks booster Teresa Prewett, a friend of Nutt’s family.

Mustain started eight games for the Razorbacks last season, but left the team after offensive coordinator Guz Malzahn, his former high school coach at Springdale, left Arkansas to take a job at Tulsa. Mustain is now at Southern California.

Nutt eventually gave Prewett an official reprimand and barred her from the sidelines during games. He said he did not initially know about the e-mail.

Streaks: Don’t look now, but Arkansas has won five of six since September losses to Alabama and Kentucky. South Carolina was the first ranked team the Razorbacks beat, but at least one player offered a comparison to Arkansas’ 10-game run a season ago.

“We feel like we’re at the point we were last year when we went on our winning streak,” linebacker Weston Dacus said.

Arkansas has had four winning streaks of at least six games in Nutt’s 10 seasons as coach. One of them came in 2001, when like this year, the Hogs lost their first three SEC games. The Razorbacks finished the regular season 7-4 that year and went to the Cotton Bowl.

Recognition: Felix Jones’ career-high 166 yards rushing was overshadowed by Darren McFadden’s 321-yard performance against South Carolina. That’s par for the course for Jones, who has rushed for 1,000 yards this season and last but does not receive the attention McFadden does.

Nutt isn’t concerned.

“I think that they know who he is now,” Nutt said.

McFadden and Jones combined for 487 yards rushing against South Carolina, a major college record for two teammates. The pair is also on pace to break the single-season record set by Southern California’s Reggie Bush (1,740) and LenDale White (1,302) in 2005.

McFadden (1,314) and Jones (1,029) have combined for 2,343 yards. They need 700 to pass Bush and White.

All the more reason to put in the 2 TE package. I'll take a rusty Cottam over a green safety in the middle of the field all day long. Big BBQ at Neyland! Vols come hungry and let's FEAST!!!!

Meanwhile that's 2 out of their DEFENSIVE backfield ... how bout offense?

Any chance "Arkansas expected to be without two running backs"?

GO VOLS!!

MOOREVOLS writes:

The thing that keeps running through my mind is that Alabama was without 5 players too. A few of them starters.

missrvrvol writes:

Since we do not throw deep, they will not need any safeties

BigOrange1 Thank you for that much needed laugh while at work. I was thinking the same thing!

GreerVol22 writes:

Least ye forget that all that has to be done is blitz and Ainge will spazz. If they are successful in flushing him out of the pocket then he gets real stupid. That why mntvol's comment is right on if we shotgun, and cross up the TE's then were on to something. I just hope Josh McNeil's shotgun hand is rested up...

Who needs a safety and the next Heisman will run all over you?

1974Vol writes:

Safety is a hard position to play because you have to think alot, read offenses, and react to what you see. On any given play the safety may be expected to provide run support, provide help over the top for the corners, cover the tight end, and not let anyone get behind him. It takes a better athelete to play corner, but most of the time you are in man to man coverage so you just chase one guy all over the field. CB takes a good athelete but not alot of football savvy. When the TV guy says "Wow someone blew the coverage on that one, easy TD on a wide open receiver" most of the time they are talking about a safety. He either read the offense wrong and just got in the wrong coverage, or bought a fake and let someone run by him. Anyway it is not a position for inexperience. Go Vols.

UT_Tim writes:

That’s great news. You can be sure the RB’s will be ready to go. Don’t forget about Marcus Munk (receiver for the Hogs). He’s been hurt all year and is just now getting back into game shape. He’s a big time receiver and our secondary better be ready for him. He must be doubled at all times.

How many predicted UT 35 GA 14? In 2007, anything is possible. And it looks like Gardner-Webb made a statement that basketballs are bouncing just as crazy. Go Vols! Let's give 'em our best shot and let the Hogs lie where they may.

remember houston nutt is the coach! the same guy who called a pass on 3rd down against bama instead of running down the clock to leave less than a minute. tn in a close one.

TDTN, office linebacker..I love it!! Beware Arkie and LargeO....

1974Vol writes:

Look for Brown in as an H Back along with the TB (Foster/Hardesty) and Cottam at TE. Then we still got room for three WR's. That means we get a LB match up on either Brown or Cottam. The ball goes to that match up every time you need 4-5 yards for a 1st down.

threehundredbowler writes:

TDTN,the only thing you have in common with Terry Tate is you both have a big mouth and a constipated brain.

1974Vol writes:

If Foster doesn't have a LB to pick up on pass play, he's in the pattern too. Ainge could have a field day.

utvols1 writes:

Without a running game, and the inability to throw a deep ball who cares if they have all freshman back there. How quickly everyone forgets last yrs game....heck you all have forgoten USC last week. DMC will do nothing but help his trophy hopes. The posts have gone to kool aid in one week.

CrankE writes:

It surely can't hurt UT. They have to take advantage though. Hit Arkansas early with a couple of touchdowns, get the crowd into it. If the defense can follow with a couple of stops early (i.e., before McFadden gets tired after earning 487 yards on the ground), UT could put the Hogs behind the 8 ball. I like it.

In 1985, I remember what, going in, appeared to be a hopeless task of shutting down an Auburn RB named Bo Jackson. We all remember what happened that day. Any chance the Vols could pull another rabbit out of the hat and do the same against Arky? Dale Jones where are you?

pdhuff#552644 writes:

Titan, in 1985 Vol Lbs actually tackled someone on the other team. That concept has vanished under Philapottamus and Chavis the last three years! If we don't have the talent, who is to blame? Who's getting 2Mil to coach .530 results. Simple , huh!

mbradshaw1#655539 writes:

Mabe they just want us to believe they are injured.

orangebloodgmc writes:

Yeah, Bo Jackson was injured that day; his feelings were hurt. Who was our running back who outshone their two, Keith Davis?
