Who needs a helmet? Not Witten

Jones says tight end would be in his top 5 since buying Cowboys

Dallas tight end Jason Witten will not forget the career-long 53-yard catch against Philadelphia last Sunday because almost 30 yards of it came without his helmet.

As he made the catch the former University of Tennessee standout was sandwiched by William James and Quinton Mikell, and his chinstrap broke, causing his helmet to fly off. Linebacker Chris Gocong was able to drag Witten down from behind at the Philadelphia 6.

"It all happened so quick that you're not able to think things through," Witten said. "I'm a tight end. I can't go down right away. TO (receiver Terrell Owens) and (quarterback Tony) Romo, they can go down. I can't be that guy."

He finished with three catches for 77 yards and a touchdown.

"Jason would be in the top five in 19 years of all the players I have been around, both on the field and off the field," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "He is outstanding. He is a tremendous competitor."

The Cowboys improved to 7-1 but the helmet-less run after the catch was the buzz after the game.

"You saw a little bit of his heart and passion," Romo said.

Said Cowboys coach Wade Phillips, "I don't think I've ever seen anything like that before."
