Tennessee's 11th-ranked men's swim team fell behind early but fought back to defeat No. 12 Virginia 156-144 Thursday afternoon at Charlottesville, Va., as captain Michael Wolfe, Octavio Alesi and Michael Muscari each won two events.
The Vols, who knocked off defending NCAA champion Auburn two weeks ago, improved to 5-0. The Cavaliers dropped to 4-2.
After the Vols won the opening race - the 200-yard medley relay (1:29.25) - then Virginia won the next three events, taking the first four places in the 100 backstroke.
However, the Vols stormed back to win the next seven events - including a 1-2 finish by Alesi and Jonas Persson in the 50 freestyle.
Wolfe won the 200 butterfly (1:46.22) and 200 backstroke (1:46.21), Alesi was first in the 100 butterfly (47.44) and Muscari took 1-meter (303.90) and 3-,meter (353.40) diving.
Women's Swimming: No. 12 Tennessee spent the first day of the Hoosierland Open Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., placing several swimmers in the finals of each event, registering career-best times and posting NCAA provisional qualifying cuts.
Five different Lady Vols competed in the "A" finals, in addition to three which reached the consolation finals. Leading the group was junior Carly Mathes, who was third in the 2000yard IM (2:02.89) and eighth in the 50 freestyle with a career-best 23.73. Senior Christine Magnuson also represented UT in two finals sessions. She was sixth in the 200 IM with an NCAA "B" time of 2:03.77 and third in the 50y free (23.19).
The Lady Vols also were second in the 200 freestyle relay.
Men's Golf: Darren Renwick of Worthin, England, and Garrick Porteouos of Bamburgh Castle, England, have signed with coach Jim Kelson.
Each was chosen to represent England in the Boys Home Internationals tournament last summer.
Kelson said the are "among the best 18-to-19-year-olds in the world."
Women's Basketball: Tennessee has received the signing papers from Alicia Manning, a 6-foot-1 forward from Woodstock, Ga.
