Lady Vol Saffer is a winner at Indiana

Senior and captain Christine Magnuson continues to set high standards for herself as a leader of the eighth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols.

However, a sophomore and freshman stepped up in a quality field to score a 1-2 finish Friday for Tennessee in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Hoosierland Invitational swimming and diving meet at Indiana University.

Sophomore Jamie Saffer set the 100 breaststroke qualifying pace (1:03.02) Friday, then came back to win in the finals (1:02.57). Freshman Martina Moravcikova was runner-up in 1:03.30.

Moravcikova swam almost a full second faster in the championship race.

Saffer's swim moved her to fourth all-time among Lady Vols in the 100 breaststroke.

Both Lady Vols met NCAA qualifying standards in that event.

Magnuson scored a runner-up finish in the 100-yard butterfly (53.94 seconds), Magnuson competed in two consecutive races, taking seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:48.38) as the Lady Vols qualified at least one swimmer in a final of every event.

Magnuson also made her presence known on UT's top two relays - four difficult swims in one evening.

Carly Mathes of UT raced hard in the 200 freestyle, taking fifth in 1:48.38.

Tennessee was especially tough in the two relays with third- and seventh-place finish in the 200 medley rellay and second and seventh in the 800 freestyle relay.

"As a team, we were really tough tonight," Lady Vols coach Matt Kredich said. "We had some rough swims this morning, but had a lot of people come back and swim a lot faster tonight."

Freshman Aleksa Akerfelds took fifth in the 400 individual medley (4:24.05), the opening race on the second day of competition.

The meet ends today.
