QUARTERBACKS (C+)

Erik Ainge gets credit for rallying in the fourth quarter (12-of-15, 107 yards, 2 TDs over the final 15 minutes), but he must also take blame for UT falling behind. Ainge was inaccurate on third-down throws and gave Vanderbilt a field goal with a poorly thrown pass that was incomplete and ruled a lateral.

RUNNING BACKS (B)

Arian Foster most often got the yards he was supposed to get, and on a couple of occasions more, finishing with 106 yards on 19 carries. Foster also had 34 yards on three catches. Montario Hardesty wasn't a factor, getting two carries for zero yards.

RECEIVERS (B-)

Lucas Taylor proved clutch with four catches for 34 yards in the fourth quarter. Josh Briscoe made a nice route adjustment on his TD catch that pulled UT within 24-16. Austin Rogers missed a block on a Chris Brown catch and was whistled for a false start in the fourth quarter.

OFFENSIVE LINE (B-)

Ainge wasn't sacked, but Vanderbilt knocked him down a few times and caused hurried throws that fell incomplete. The line's run blocking was not as dominant as it has been, and there wasn't much of a push on Ainge's fourth-and-1 QB sneak conversion.

DEFENSIVE LINE (C+)

No quarterback sacks, and only two tackles-for-loss, one by Dan Williams while Robert Ayers and J.T. Mapu were credited with 1/2 of a TFL apiece. Williams led the way with six tackles while Mapu had five.

LINEBACKERS (A-)

Aside from a facemask penalty (Jerod Mayo) and a pass-interference penalty (Ryan Karl), this unit enjoyed its best performance of the season. Mayo, who had 15 tackles and 2.5 TFLs, played on an all-star level in the fourth quarter, snuffing out numerous run plays. Rico McCoy had 11 stops.

SECONDARY (B-)

Tremendous stand by the secondary at the end of the first half to hold Vanderbilt to a field goal after three straight passing plays. DeAngelo Willingham was whistled for pass interference on the 'Dores final drive, and Eric Berry had a facemask penalty. Hefney had eight tackles and Berry delivered a clean hit that knocked Earl Bennett out of the game.

SPECIAL TEAMS (B)

Dennis Rogan brings the grade up for this unit with his tremendous return performance (three punts, 75 yards, three kickoff returns, 74 yards). Rogan also made a TD-saving tackle on Vanderbilt's final kickoff return to the UT 42. Daniel Lincoln made a 33-yard field goal but had a very low extra-point kick blocked and missed a 41-yard field goal. Britton Colqutt averaged 41.3 yards per punt.

COACHING (B)

The Vols had a nice opening drive charted, but went away from their success with a five-wide package that produced mixed results. UT's defense appeared flat-footed when Vanderbilt opened the second half with a TD drive, but the right schemes were in place in the fourth quarter. Special teams has become a winning edge.

OVERALL (B)

The Vols had their backs to the wall once more, trailing 24-9 with time running down on their SEC East Division championship hopes. The fourth-quarter rally was a credit to the team, the coaches, and the fans, who all had an impact in this emotional come-from-behind victory.

Coaching gets a B?

I was at the game and everybody was a flat as a pancake, including the crowd.

What turned the game around wasn't coaching, but a roughing the punter penalty.

I thought it was just another typical Fulmer display.

Also, Cutcliff should get a big fat F for going to the 5 wides after the first drive we couldn't be stopped. So let me get this straight. Our frist drive we drive right down the field beautifully mixing the run and pass, Foster can't be stopped, then from that moment on until 5 minutes remaing in the 2nd Quarter, we don't call another running play? 14 straight passes! If Cutcliff had stuck to mixing the run and pass or just stuck to the run with Foster, this game would have never come down to having to hope like everything for Vandy to miss a FG. Foster should have had twice the carries he did today. He is an awesome back, sometimes unstoppable almost, and is very under used by Cutcliff.

We played bad, fell behind, but at the end of the day found a way to win and are still #1 in the east, and that is just fine with me! One down, one more to go til Atlanta. (at least we aren't Bama! hahaha....) GO VOLS!!!

papavol writes:

cmon, at least cut him a C for trying something new. only give him an F if he continues that set. i agree with you on fulmer but we pulled it out somehow.

Titan writes:

People just can't be satisfied. They complain about conservative play calling but now complain that we threw the ball 14 times in a row. The five wide set was very effective and moved the ball down the field effectivly. It fizzled and then Lincoln missed the FG. I think the worst thing that happened was that both the running attack and the no back set/five wideouts were effective and Cut couldn't decide which he wanted to use. For all the naysayers (and I've been one of them), we're a 23rd consecutive win over Kentucky away from playing for the SEC championship. You can spin it anyway you want about us backing in, Florida played a tougher schedule, etc. Fact remains, we win, we go to Atlanta. We've taken what we've been given and made the most of it. After the Alabama game, who would have thunk it? Speaking of the Tide, is the bloom off the Saban rose today - LA Monroe? Are you kidding me?

PowerT writes:

I give an Overall A .... as in Atlanta!!

Good call titan.

We took what we got... and we just might get ATL. If you want to complain, wait till we have that brutal LSU, AUB, ALA, west fixture in a couple of years. Ouch!!

In this article, you will find that LSU is more scared of UGA than UT. Someone needs to forward this on to the football team, if they haven't already seen it, so it will give them another reason to be fired up to beat UK in Lexington.

I thought this was ridiculous. If Tennessee is coming downhill and defeats Kentucky, UT is the team that LSU needed to fear all year long. Confidence to win, added to a bruised ego from lackluster fan support (myself included) would equal a long day for LSU in the championship, and even though we were down for most of the day, our VERY young team has the balls to get it done.

We can win the SEC. We can do it. Our young men can do this. They can f'ing do this. Confidence men, and some ridiculous lights out football. Go Vols. I believe.

So the SEC wouldn't have SEC representation in the national championship?! Winning the SEC championship is national enough for me. Beat the snot out of those Cats. Make them understand why we have them crushed under a streak of over 2 decades.

Then batter those Tigers around. Steal a NC from them and make them feel the pain of millions of Vol fans from 2004. This can be your year if you're hungry enough!

GO VOLS BABY!!! I don't know how to add more emotion to this! GET IT DONE!!!! You men can do this. You can definitely do it. There's a destiny; every vol fan and every former player can feel it. It's a force. Go Vols!!!

RocketVol writes:

cw-hower, just read those comments on Sportsline - makes you not care how the Vols get it done - just get it done! I think Phil and Co. were outcoached and outplayed yesterday - should've lost. But I'm really hoping we get a shot at the Tigers. It's gonna take an amazing preparation this week and psyche to build our guys up to Kentucky - I think the situation will do it more so than coaching, but whatever it takes at this point.

seaplane#216536 writes:

C at best. We weren't playing LSU and Vandy came to our house. Better have a great game plan for UK with a defensive package they haven't seen before, or Georgia goes to Atlanta.

VOLinDAWGland writes:

Some of you either don't know or don't want to remember in TN history when attacking Fulmer (FYI, not a Fulmer lover, just tired of the coninuous uninformed harping)...TN has always had a history of playing these types of games whether Bill Battle, Johny or Phil is coaching (don't know much before Battle era). I'm just happy they managed to pull out a win. I've seen games like this under Johny where they never came off the mat to beat a team they were supposed to beat in an important game.

Oklahoma got creamed by unranked Texas Tech and the overpaid genius at Alabama got beat at home by lowly La whatever school.

I'll take the squeaker to the bank, take a deep breath, and focus on beating UK.

pdhuff#552644 writes:

It is what it is! Grades are fair except I can't find a category lower than an F for coaching. Got to be one somewhere. Berry's two face mask penalities on same drive should be an SEC first, but he was trying. Liked Karl's end zone pass coverage (nice shove in front of back judge) to keep drive alive. Best Phil play call was for Stewart to rough Colquitt on that punt. Do we have to get so far behind before we call that play! Flattest effort of the year! How'd we escape that trap? We won and thats what count! Now, up and down Vols should beat Cats by 17! On to Lexington!

VOLinDAWGland writes:

Hey Touchdown...I give you an 'I' for continued 'idiotic' postings and enough with the 'Foolmer' phooey...it was old and tired a long time ago...kind of like your comments. I think we all got it...you don't like Fulmer, regardless of what he does, now move along.

killer65forevervol writes:

BigUn had it right fans and to add the very late flag by the ref did not help in the last couple mintues of the game. Why we do this 80/20 pass over run game plan eludes the overall game plan of any sensible coach. Look back thru history and any game we passes 80% of the time were the games we lost or barely snuck by. It the absolute opposite for the games where a good pass/run mix was employed. Is Cutcliffe just trying to build Ainge's record? The world may never know. Well, our great Vols slipped another by yesterday. Lucky Vandy kicker did not kick one thru at the end of the game or it would have been so long SEC Championship in DEC. Its these type games that cause hair loss and excess pounds around the mid section due to Stress. Ky. and Woodson did not look good yesterday. Hope we Rock in ATL. in DEC.

y2church#372759 writes:

phooey! Fulmer sucks. Can we please get a real coach, like someone with NFL experience, like that Saban guy or something?

I mean, we just keep on barely winning, which gets zero press coverage to help with recruiting. He on the other hand ends up as the headline almost every week by losing to teams like Miss. State and La. Marilyn or whatever. Brilliant!

When will our coaching staff catch up with these new coaching philosophies!?

volfan53 writes:

It doesn't matter who is coaching if the players do not give 100 percent during the game. I was so upset with their lackluster performance during the 2nd and 3rd quarters that I was ready to go home. I'm glad I stuck around but they cannot continue t play like this and expect to win. It is, however, the coaches job to ensure that the team does not play like this. If your star quaaterback is playing like he thinks we will win no matter how bad he plays, sit him for a series and see how motivated he gets. If I were a pro team and watched Eric yesterday, he would have dropped to a second day draft pick. Luckly for Eric it doesn't just depend on how you play jus one game. If he continues with his average performances for the last games we have then he will drop to the second day of the draft. Got to get back to the old Eric who coud easily hit the open man. As for the coaching, there isn't much you can say. Game plan was terrible. When something is not working, like your quarterback is having a bad day, you don't keep trying to have him throw it to get the kinks out. Do what is effective that day and win the game without having to come from behind all the time. You know if we had kept running the ball the way we did on the first drive we would have kept Vandy off the field more and they may never have gotten into sync and scored the points they did. I am happy we won but would sure love to see a better game out of our team next time.

k0605#241765 writes:

I'd give the team a B for quarter #1, F's for the next two quarters and an A for the last quarter. I guess it was good that the Vols won while obviously overlooking Vandy, but that effort gets a big F against Kentucky next week.

linebam writes:

Lucky the Ark. quarterback fumbles or it would have been so long National Championship in January. Stop with the "lucky" s__t! Most championship teams in NCAA history have needed some "luck" along the way. "Luck" is earned and UT played hard to get back in the game and win after falling so far behind... I'll take this "lucky" win and any other if it gets us to Atlanta.

When Al Wilson went beserk in the SEC Championship game, everyone thought it was great. I don't remember anyone spinning in negatively. But when Mayo does it, it's Fulmer's fault that Mayo had to do it??? Give me a break. I wonder how many of the posters have ever played a down. I played for a coaching legend in high school. I can't ever remember a game where I had to depend on him to get me ready to play. Players get players ready to play.

inquiry writes:

I didn't understand changing the gameplan all that much from the Arkansas Game.. it seems like just when we get our run game going again, we're back spreading out receivers 4-5 at a time with no backs. What happen to carrying the rock in KNoxville?

volbeck writes:

im with you titan. this wasnt your run of the mill vandy team. this is the team that beat south carolina and should have beaten georgia. in the craziest year in college football a win is a win. kentucky has been far from a perfect team. if andre woodson is on they will be tough. but they have also laid a couple of eggs this year.

tdTN, Finally you show your real colors and they are not Orange. "Thank Al Wilson for YOUR one and only national championship. Never thought you were were a Big Orange fan. I believe that you are a Bama fan and thats why you hate Fulmer, the coach of the National Championship team, so much because is record is 11-4 (Yes, I counted the cheating Tide's forfeited tie). You want Johnny back cause you liked his 4-12 record against the tide. Go kiss your four million dollar coach who has lost to Mississippi State and Louisiana-Monroe on consecutive week-ends

Volalumnus writes:

A football length inside and Georgia would be going to Atlanta. Luckily there is still a shot at it for TN.
I glad and rather have a win, but this team and staff definately have problems and in large part I don't think they are addressed because so many keep offering so many excuses.

It reminds me of a bunch of kids sitting in a sports car reving the engine after the mechanic just worked on it. They are all excited and instead of being responsible and checking it out, they are about to go racing down the street with all the confidence of how great their car is.
The problem is that from inside the car, they can't see the mechanic (coaching staff) forgot to put the lug nuts on.

the kool-aid is a flowing today.... vol nation we still have issues on defense... vandy would have put up another 20 if they would have had a decent qb......... he missed some wide open receivers that would hav scored.... i watched it on payview and if you think fulmer isn't feeling the pressure he's more animated than ever because if he would have lost yesterday and kent his fat ass would be gone........ bottom line he under the gun and he's not as secure as we all believe.... we're still going to lose 5 games this year so I hope everyone is happy with that and give the coaches an extension so it cost us 9 million to buy the clowns out... AVERAGE EXPECTATIONS BREEDS AVERAGE PERFORMANCE

how many empty seats?????? couldn't tell on tv

TurboFan writes:

Cut explains in another article that the 5wide plays were taken from the success that Fla had in using it against Vandy. And it worked until Ainge started misfiring partly because Vandy learned from the Fla game what to do - blitz the passer. However, why no running at all after that drive in the first half is a mystery.

Bigger question is why the defense couldn't stop a mediocre Vandy offense for two quarters. Absolutely no pressure on the QB.

Ironcity writes:

Touchdown I know its been said before but try not to call our coach a name. Thats what other schools fans do. You obviously don't like Fulmer and I can understand that but you can easily get your point across by not sounding like an Alabama or a Georiga fan. Fulmer has done nothing to not deserve our respect. Agian you may not like the job he has done but for this career at UT he has done nothing that we as fans should be ashamed of or would compell us to suddenly want to start calling him names.

shopsports#273141 writes:

Is Alabama losing and Florida not going to the SEC championship game making our season? Has it come to that? Sad. TV looked to me like there were a lot of empty seats. Were there? It seemed like the usual execution and game plan...If it isn't working, by all means, DON'T CHANGE. See if you can lose doing the SAME THING. BTW, the players need to get off their lazy butts and do a much better job. They are playing with a "don't really care" energy most Sat. They do ONLY what they have to do and HOPE somebody will pull it out. But, overall, they DON'T CARE. They don't give back on what they are given and it gets worse every year.

TruOrangeBlood writes:

It amazes me...Coaches get a (B) and millions of dollars; players get (c)'s and no money. Why can't we judge the coaches critically instead of trying to keep their job for them?

UT wins SEC, we go to the sugar and likely end up playing hawaii. We win and lose, i believe we will play in the capital one versus either michigan or illinois. We lose to Kentucky (heaven help us) we may end up in the Chik-fil-a bowl against either VA tech or Fla State, but could end up playing in the music city vs penn st (doubt it), liberty vs perhaps southern miss....again im not sure...or the independence against, maybe, k state...or, hell, maybe texas, i dunno. Im not sure about the lower tier bowls, but you can take the top ones to the bank. How bout we just beat kentucky and you won't have to worry about my lower tier predictions

We won the game, just take the win. Every team struggles against somebody that they are supposed to easily beat. Now I understand why coach Cut throws the dink and dunk passes because Ainge wilts like old lettuce under a heat lamp when there is pressure.
Stand in the pocket, you have a great line, and step into your throws and take the hit. You acted like a scared little school girl when someone got close. Now the rest of our opponents have an easy blueprint, Blitz.

objk1#231846 writes:

I could not help but wonder yesterday if Ainge is the reason we dump the ball 5 yards every time we drop back. All year I have been frustrated with not throwing the ball downfield. Yesterday it all became clear. When five guys go out for a pass at least 1 or 2 have to be more than ten yards down field. Ainge never even looks downfield.
Some opinions:
1. Huddle up
2. Run Foster till his tounge is dragging the turf
3. Try play action from a running set
4. Put the ball in Berry's hands somehow
5. Gerald Jones looks as athletic as any other player we have on offense why is he not on the field more
6. Please stop recruiting midgets on defense

WYLOVER writes:

I am always happy to see a win. Let's not forget that we were playing vandy yesterday. The game should have never been in question. If we play like that again against UK, we lose by 21+....again.

Fulmer has to go if we want back on the national stage....fact. An SEC championship would be a great way for him to go out. I have respect for what he has done but we are a long way from where we need to be and he is not going to get us back in the mix. Maybe we could get Bob Stoops back into a real conference again. Yes, he lost this week....and yes he has had materially better teams than UT with less pro talent.

MississippiVol writes:

Watching the game, I thought Ainge had been replaced by Superstar Paul Crew from "The Longest Yard", the way some of his passes looked. Give him a D+.

MANVOL writes:

Overall B??? If that last kick is 6 inches to right we lose! I'll give you a win is a win, but come on we looked awful at times for team that contriols its own destiny.. C- at best. Ainge stop worring about your passing percentage and throw the ball deep they 're open!!

murrayvol writes:

Don't know if we'll be in Atlanta or not but if we are, I hope we're arrive as a double digit underdog (and we will). This and every other Fulmer team seems to get jacked for a hopeless cause. What sweet revenge it would be for the 2001 incident. And what a way to bid farewell to Miles the Magnificent. Go Vols!

How can 5 units grade lower than the coaching staff??? This staff's motto seems to be "ok, that worked, let's try something else."

Voltx, I think you are right. Cotton Bowl either way, unless Georgia or Florida loses their final non-conference game. No way Capial One doesn't want Meyer vs. Zook. Outback will pass since we went last year so I'm guessing Auburn there. Alabama's loss and Arkansas' likely loss next Friday means no Cotton for either of them. Chik-Fil-A not exactly enamored with our attendance the last two times we were there. Win/lose, Cotton for surel Lose to Kentucky, it's a phooey shoot but I still believe no worse than Peach. If Alabama were to beat Auburn, New Year's Day pretty much secured. Unless of course, we win/win. How cool to ruin LSU's season! Go Vols!!!

FWBVol writes:

News flash, whether UT is lucky or not, or whatever reason you want to give for the current winning streak and escape yesterday, 10 other teams in the SEC would love to be in our position.

LSU is the only team in the SEC that has anything on UT right now. Georgia fans will be wearing Kentucky blue Saturday, and everyone else is singing the Blues.

I can't grade a game I didn't see. My grade is a "W" for Win. That's the only grade any of us should be worried about.

asleep#212036 writes:

TDTN,

Amen. It will take a Georgia-level game, on the road, to beat the "Cats. And you are right, we do match up better with run first teams, like Georgia, Arkansas, and yes. even the mighty LSU. Pass happy teams, like Florida and Alabama, have been, to put it mildly, somewhat difficult for us to defend. At least Kentucky's defense is not as strong as either Alabama's or Florida's. I think we can take them, but not throwing the ball first. MSU, Florida, and SC showed the way to win is to run them off the field. Maybe Cut is watching and will put the team's interest in front of his desire to have Ainge drafted highly by the NFL! Did I say that out loud? Go Vols!!!

1. Breathe in, breathe out, move on!!
2. Play aggressive, man defense 70% vs Ky, or get picked apart.

DennisVols writes:

It is amazing. 8 weeks ago UT is 1-2 and all I could see on here is how UT would be 5-7 at best. Predictions of no bowl game, 2 losing seasons in the last 3. Fulmer would be fired was the cry. “Why is Fulmer is still the coach?”
Now 8 weeks later, a 7-1 run, a shot at the east title and a shot at the SEC Championship game and here we go complaining about what kind of bowl we would go to.
“Overrated” is a word being used to describe a team that in the last 8 games has the best record in the conference over that span. They have the best scoring defense (PPG allowed) over that span and the 2nd highest scoring offense. This is measured up against the Gators, the Dawgs, the Tide and the LSU Tigers.
What else do you want? I was upset with UT’s program after the UF and Tide games, but even I am man enough to see this team is on the way up. The record and the stats prove it. Should they get better? Dang right they should, satisfied with how good they are? No I am not and neither are the players or the coaches. Anybody watch #2 Oregon get beat by their Vanderbilt Thursday? How about the Sooners getting waxed by their Vanderbilt last night? Quit believing that anuone is a easy victory. You may get one but don’t count on it. This same Vandy team had GA on the ropes. Had they not fumbled late in the game GA loses.
Keeping it Real
Go VOLS!!!!!

innocuous_infidel writes:

Football fans have short memories - after looking at the Tide's football forum comments, there are actually several posters that want to run off Saban in his first season. We're living in a college football age where nearly anything can happen on any given day.

Now - I don't know how anyone could be pleased with the second/third quarter play of Ainge yesterday. This dude appears to get seriously rattled. Thank goodness he was able to pull it together toward the end of the third quarter, but it probably wouldn't have happened without the roughing the kicker penalty to ignite the crowd.

Many predicted that this team would have a less focused effort this week, and indeed that's what happened. In spite of somewhat inconsistent play from the defense yesterday, they mostly came through at the end - although the pass interference call on Vandy's last drive was very nearly the nail in UT's coffin.

Kentucky could make this team look very bad next Saturday if UT isn't well prepared and focused. Whether the motivation comes from Fulmer, Cutcliffe, Al Wilson or a couple dozen of Josh McNeil's female acquaintances - who really gives a phooey as long as it does the job? Go north and kick some Bluegrass ---!

asleep#212036 writes:

It's not the dink and dunk I mind - it's the absolute lack of committment to the run game, even when it's working. Wasn't Cut hired, in large part, to fix the anemic UT run game? Obviously Sanders can coach QB's but he didn't seem to go along with an old offensive lineman's idea of power football and Fulmer sent him packing. Enter Cutcliffe, offensive guru and newly appointed savior of UT"s offensive glory days. First year, I'll cut some slack. This year? C'mon! We could have stayed in the Bama game and possibly won at Cal if we had just not abandoned the run. And in both of those cases, it was working! SC and Vandy wouldn't have been nail-biters either. If anyone thinks we can go to Lexington and out-pass Woodson and Co. to victory, you haven't watched us this year. Our D, as much as it has improved, cannot stay on the field and defend 80 plays and that's exactly where we're heading if we refuse to stay with the run. Go Vols!!! RUN over the 'Cats!
