A month ago, Tennessee's football team limped home from Tuscaloosa with battle scars.
Like a warship that has taken a few broadsides, the Vols needed safe harbor.
Neyland Stadium was the perfect haven. Four weeks, four wins. Prospects restored.
Now it's time to set sail again into the treacherous seas of the Southeastern Conference.
"I think we're playing good football," quarterback Erik Ainge said Tuesday. "I think we're kind of hot right now."
The Vols will have to play good football Saturday at Kentucky, or else their SEC East title evaporates.
Tennessee will take the field in Commonwealth Stadium in an unaccustomed role - underdog. The Vols have notched 12 consecutive wins in Lexington dating to 1981, but the odds-makers put more stock in recent history.
In 2007, UT has not lived up to its road-warrior reputation. The Vols are 1-3 away from Neyland Stadium and looked bad in all three losses - at California, Florida and Alabama.
If Kentucky prevails Saturday it will be the first year Tennessee has lost four road games since the aforementioned 1981. That season started with blowouts at Georgia and Southern Cal and included the (then) annual whipping by Alabama at Legion Field.
In the years since, UT has lost three road games in a season only once, in 2005. Until now, that is.
The Vols were undefeated on the road in 1983, 1998, 2001 and 2004. Since '81, they have gone 4-1 five times, including last year, 3-1 on five occasions and 3-0-2 in 1990.
"I've never made a big deal out of being at home or on the road," said head coach Phillip Fulmer, "because you've got to play both in this league. And we have been a very good road team in the past."
This year, not so much. Aside from a solid 33-21 victory at Mississippi State on Oct. 13, Tennessee has looked awful on the road. The three losses were by a combined 77 points.
"You go back and look at the California game and the Florida game," said defensive coordinator John Chavis, "and in my mind, everything that can wrong did go wrong."
In each case, both UT fumbles and punts were returned for touchdowns. In each case, an inexperienced defense was overwhelmed by the big-play potential of an explosive opponent.
As for a 41-17 loss at Alabama, which hasn't won a game since ...
"To tell you the truth I don't know what happened," said guard Anthony Parker.
When I charted the stats from seven home games and four away games, it appeared several things were happening.
At home, UT takes care of the football: only five turnovers in seven games. On the road, seven turnovers in four games.
At home, Tennessee has recorded 16 takeaways. On the road, only two.
At home, Tennessee averages 171 yards rushing. On the road, 115.
At home, opponents average 341 yards of offense. On the road, 468.
"I don't think the road has been the problem with our challenges," said offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe. "Sometimes things just happen."
An optimist makes a case that Tennessee will be a different road team Saturday. Four games provided a badly needed dose of maturity. Four wins added confidence.
Do Eric Berry, Brent Vinson and DeAngelo Willingham have a better grip on what they're doing than they did in Tuscaloosa? They should.
Are Chris Scott, Jacques McClendon and Vlad Richard more in tune with the physicality of an SEC line of scrimmage? How could they not be.
OK, so go prove it in a hostile environment, which Commonwealth Stadium will most certainly be.
That used to be a challenge Tennessee devoured.

bum, Ainge played in the game. Duh!!! Sure he did some good and some not so good things in that game. But how do you expect him to answer a Beat Writer's questions? " Hey we are making some mistakes, so I don't think we have a chance against Ky." Pick, pick, pick, and pick some more. I hope you don't have children , because they would be miserable.

what is this kid thinking? fulmer should ban him from the media like he does the freshmen..... they beat vanderbilt at home in a come from behind 4 quarter game by one single point....i can't remember the exact quotes, however ainge has said simular things recently?????? aaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!

Ainge, err, err, "kinda hot"! Semantics aside, a curving away FG attempt from a .500 team does not make one "hot"! "Hot" would be 24 of 27 for 285 yds Saturday! The bowls do not consider us "hot"! LSU does not consider us "hot". Tha Cats consider us very beatable. So does Vegas. That said, somehow beat the Cats and nearly cap a remarkable season of yo-yo-like proportions. Hug Phil and have your best game of the year! Go Vols!

When I chart the stats, I find that at home the Vols played So Miss, Arkansas State, La Lafayette, and Vanderbilt. On the road they played Cal, Fla, and Alabama. You're quite the statistician, Mike.

Vols win big this Saturday, I can feel it ! You can say that we squeeked by South Carolina and Vandy, which is true. But you could also think we are meant to win the East this year, then get our shot at LSU. With all the upsets going on, the media should not be so quick to pencil LSU into the National Championship game. The freshmen seem to be getting into a rythm at the right time, just need Ainge to get the ball to the receivers and play solid defense.
OrangePride writes:
Well.......the real issue is not the past anyway. It's Saturday. Kentucky is a very dangerous and very formidable team (when is the last time that was case?). Anyway...I LIKE being the underdog!! We were big underdogs to GA and ARK and just about everyone was ready to put a fork in the 2007 Vols, but they played great games and won. Home, away, on Mars.....who cares....we need one more performance like those and we go to Atlanta. Go Vols.....one more time!!!
finn writes:
The most honest assessment of UT's season is a lack of consistency. The team has a problems showing up strong week in week out. The only back-back strong performances were UGA and Miss St. As for the 'hot streak' the past 4 games, UT is 2 field goals away from being not so hot (2-2.) Recognizing this does not make one miserable or intent on sucking the joy out of life. That is rediculous and I'm not sure why folks feel the need to make character judgements (ie..I hope you don't have kids) based on their opinion of a damn article. Get off your high-horses and talk about football. This isn't Oprah or Dr. Phil.
gohawks1 writes:
The offensive game plan should be similar to the one we ran against AR - move the ball, keep the clock running, and score points often. Woodson is not nearly as impressive when he is sitting on the sidelines. A good run/pass mix would be good, but don't abandon the run so quickly as we have done in the past.
Defensively, mix it up. You don't have to blitz on every play, but do it enough to keep Woodson guessing.
DenmarkVol_aka_Mbumburu writes:
tngeoff and others: if the wind had blown a little harder Saturday and Vandy had made that field goal, we'd all be singing a different tune.
Sure, we showed great heart in coming back. And we're all happy for the W, of course.
But "playing good football" and "kind of hot right now?"
IMHO, we have played maybe 3-4 good games this season thus far, real Tennessee football games against decent opponents...GA, AR, Miss. St. and the first half against SC.
We played ugly against Vandy for three quarters and needed the wind in our favor to pull out that W. We were thoroughly outplayed throughout the game.
If this is what Erik needs to think to get up for the KY game, then fine, not a problem. I love Erik and think we're extremely fortunate to have him.
As a fan, however, I wouldn't classify the Vandy game as "really good football."

m-BUM, you are so focused on the field goal that Vandy missed. Apparently you did not see the kick or read Lincoln's quote in the paper. I sit in the north end zone and the kick was going to be very far left. The wind pushed it back to the right to where it barely grazed the left upright. Just remember, the wind blows on both teams and that is the reason that Lincoln missed his field goal. How convenient that you only focus on that miss to make your anti-Vol point.

I don't think some of you realize how big that game was against Vanderbilt and what it should have done for our teams confidence.
In each of Tennessee 3 losses we were beaten because our young team gave up when we fell behind. I saw no fight in our boys play.
Last Saturday, and I admit it was to an inferior opponent) our boys came from behind and got the victory. True, Eric made some terrible throws in the second and third quarters but he made some fantastic All SEC plays in the 4th.

DenmarkVol_aka_Mbumburu writes:
eefor10c, that's exactly my point, friend. If the wind had been blowing harder, Vandy makes that field goal. It wouldn't even have been close without the wind.
And how DARE you accuse me of making an "anti-Vol point."
I've bled orange since I was in diapers and, throughout my adult life, I've paid tens of thousands of dollars and driven thousands of miles to games and earned the right to be critical of underachievement. That's every fan's right. And it ain't "anti-Vol."
My point (read this slowly, now): I disagree with Ainge's comment about this team "playing good football" now and being "hot."
No doubt they've played better since coming home to Neyland. We seem to have found a groove, at times, and gathered some momentum.
But our play throughout the season has been spotty and inconsistent. Any fool can see that...just as any fool could see Vandy outplayed us last Saturday.
As far as I'm concerned, we've played two, complete, quality games against decent opponents -- GA and AR. Might throw in our performance against Miss. St.
So let's forget all this and go beat KY and earn our way to Atlanta.
AlpharettaVol writes:
There are too many "what if's" on this site. If SC had gone for a field goal instead of a TD in the second half they might have won. But they didn't. If Vandy had hit their field goal on the final play they would have won the game. But they didn't. If Stoerner had held on to the ball we probably wouldn't have won the first BCS. But he didn't. That's what football is all about. Naysayers: live in the present and deal with what really happened, not what could have happened. Maybe you just think it makes you a football expert to talk about what might have been. If that's what you think, you're dead wrong.

SJT18- A couple of corrections:
1. Tennessee recruiting classes are not that far off USC's. Check rivals.com.
2. Tennessee could have had several Heisman candidates with the athletes that they have recruited. They simply do not get any better once arriving to Tennessee.
3. Your argument about the SEC versus PAC 10 is the same crybaby stuff that I cannot stand from SEC fans. It is obvious that when USC played top caliber teams that they did well (see Carrolls record versus top 25)
4. Yes there is some luck involved along the way.
Once again, please do not compare these 2 programs. They are light years apart.
DenmarkVol_aka_Mbumburu writes:
Man, never in my life did I expect to see such widespread acceptance of mediocrity from Tennessee football fans.
I just hope the players and coaches don't catch that disease.
LargeOrange writes:
I agree with both sides of these posts. The Vols have not been razor sharp except in two big SEC games, but we have to remember we were not picked to be a top 10 powerhouse that is under performing, I think this team started out picked by a lot of people to finish 8-4 or 7-5. With all of the injuries and issues (Coker) I think we are in pretty good shape considering that more than 20 freshmen have played some are making huge contributions to a team still in the hunt at Thanksgiving. I think maybe Erik has "kind of a" confidence problem since the horrible performance he turned in against SC. I want him to believe we are hot right now and on a roll. I think KY will be fired up and will fight like heck :-) in the first half but if we can keep even with them we will wear them down and finish them in the second half going away. Do I wish we had a team that could just dial in a "W" against KY, yes, do we have such a team right no, no we do not. We are where we are, and it is not that bad of a place to be.
LargeOrange writes:
Sorry Mbum, there is a big difference between acceptance of mediocrity and acceptance of reality. I accept that we are in the Top 20 in D1, going to a major bowl, 1 game away from an SEC-E championship, not a National Championship, which I would prefer but I don't get everything I want. Acceptance of mediocrity would be a Notre Dame fan that was proud of their current team.
LargeOrange writes:
Not far off, I predicted about the same, I had us losing to Cal and Fla, and I said probably one other, either GA, Ark, or Alabamy. My point is that we may have gotten blown out early in the year, and maybe we got some luck from time to time, but I am not mad about that, I am going to be feeling grateful tomorrow that we are in the position we are in considering what we had to work with this year. I am expecting much more next year and the next. That is unless (Heaven Forbid) Rogan starts smoking pot on a regular basis, and Berry has his shoulder ripped nearly off of his body, and Creer blows out a knee and 5 or 6 more starters are not available in 2008 and 2009, and then I will accept reality and hope we can get a shot at the SEC title in those years too.

LMAO..."reality" LargeOrange? Here's reality for you, and these stats don't lie: http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/2007/Inter....
For more "reality," see scores of Cal, Florida and Alabama games (and then check Louisiana-Monroe's record -- while you're at it, check Cal's record as well).
And "going to a major bowl?" Says who? KY? LSU? And what do you consider a "major bowl?"
A major bowl to me is a BCS bowl. And only "major bowl"/BCS possibility I see is the Sugar, IF we win the next two games.
Or maybe you consider the Chick-fil-A or Cotton or Outback major bowls...if so, I rest my case about acceptance of mediocrity.
All the problems aside, this team has shown heart and character, no question. The offensive line is good and has finally learned (I hope) to open some holes for the running game.
Erik is a top-five QB, IMHO. We have great backs. The receiving corps, which was such a worry at the start of the season, has really stepped up and won games for us.
I won't comment on the defense because I'm trying to stay positive.
Best news for me, at this point in the season, no matter what happens next two games: all the promising freshmen.

Ok, I checked out the stats link, and we're looking pretty good in the "sacks allowed" category, you have to admit. But kidding aside, I do consider other bowls major besides the BCS bowls. There are only four (now 5) winners per year of those bowls. I want to win those bowls on a regular basis, just like you do, but there is no program that can realistically expect to do that every year. If we play like we have proven that we can, already this year, we can win 2 more games and then we will be where we need to be. Before I get blasted, I not saying that we WILL win those games but rather that we CAN if we play like we are capable. If we don't then there are about 8 months to b1tch and moan about how bad we are, if one chooses to.

2. "That's just plain stupid. UT still puts alot of guys in the NFL and it isn't by accident. Very obviously these talented players are developing and showing that they can compete or else they wouldn't be drafted." -What does the university have to show for all of these great players? Nothing! Thanks coach.
3. "Hawaii is by no means a top 25 team this year for instance. They've struggled with several really bad mid-major teams." -That's just plain stupid! I guess a 4 loss CAL is better than Hawaii in your mind. A pitiful CAL team that whipped Tennessee.
4. You just admitted the SEC is down this year and the Vols still have 2 losses with a likely 3rd. What does this say about Tennessee?
5. "Once again, please do not compare these 2 programs. They are light years apart."
No they aren't. Have you checked USC's performance this year?"
-Are you serious? USC is 2-1 against the top 25. They won at CAL (The same place Tennesee lost). And they are playing with their back-up quarterback. Would love to see where UT would be without Ainge.

sjt18, with all due respect, I completely and totally disagree with that assessment. You and I apparently have entirely different expectations of Tennessee football.
I emphatically agree with Coach Fulmer that we want to be in the BCS mix EVERY year, we want to be in the mix for the SEC Championship EVERY year, and we want to win the SEC East EVERY year.
Sure, we won't make it at times. But that's the standard of excellence. Anything less is a disappointment, to one degree or another.
Look at last year's team: we were two plays away, I believe, from the SEC Championship. We were CLOSE and COMPETITIVE and lost to FL and LSU in the closing moments of each game.
I can handle those losses. The only game we were blown out of last season was Arkansas.
What has folks so upset this season is that we were not competitive in three big games. In fact, we stunk it up and were humiliated and embarassed.
We'll take losses if we're competitive. But in those three games, we weren't.
And, of course, I believe our stats reflect our play -- so do college football coaches as they prepare for opponents each week. Stats are keys to a team's strengths and weaknesses.
You think KY coaches don't know our pass defense rankings by heart? Ask them if those stats are "telling."
The stats are a coach's resume, to a significant degree. Ask John Chavis or Larry Slade if they're proud of our defensive stats. Ask them if those stats are "telling."
Anyway, have a great Thanksgiving everyone...and Go Vols...

throw statistics out the window. there are lies, damn lies and statistics.
the plain truth is there have been games... or lengthy periods of time when tennessee has looked like a very good football team.
there have also been games.... or lengthy periods of time when tennessee has looked like utter and complete garbage.
when they are not playing well, a lot of it is blamed on youth. but, the tenn offense is not young. where was the tenn offense the 2nd half against bama, florida, carolina, and sections of the vandy game.
it has been a weird year in college football and the SEC in particular. but, the reality is that there may not be another team in the country that has had such disparity in their level of play throughout the season.
if you were a gambler, tenn would be the last team you would want to place a bet on.... for or against.
is that something that should be blamed on the coaches. i don't know. maybe the team is overated and the staff has done far better than anyone will ever know to have them on the brink of playing in the SEC title game. or maybe, this team with better direction would be playing with consistency and be regarded as a top 10 team in the country. i don't know.
but, if i were a fan, the yo-yo nature of this team would be driving me nuts.

i think skilled position players (who are redshirt fresh or true sophs) should be able to contribute and be counted on at the skill positions, except qb. 2nd year defensive back are usually fairly steady players. the big ugly positions and qb are where it is harder in my opinion.
