Adams: UT scored big even in style points

It's a mid-week Tennessee basketball game in late November against a nondescript opponent. You're wondering if is it worth the effort.

Here's why you go: Because the next day, your neighbor or co-worker might ask, "Did you see that?"

And you will have more than an answer. You will have a comeback.

For example, did you see that alley-oop pass from Chris Lofton to JaJuan Smith for a dunk Tuesday night?

Why, that was almost as good as when Ramar Smith threw the ball over his head into the basket while being fouled. He even made the free throw, which drew a huge ovation from a crowd that hadn't forgotten his 0-for-12 night at the foul line five days ago.

He responded with a smile that was almost as big as the one JaJuan Smith made after hitting a shot falling down, then sliding backward across the floor and introducing himself to the front-row crowd at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"That shot let me know it was my night," said JaJuan Smith, who had a career-high 32 points in UT's 109-40 victory over Middle Tennessee State University.

It wasn't just Smith's night. It was Tennessee's night.

No one was more impressed than MTSU coach Kermit Davis.

"I don't know if I've ever seen an SEC team play better," he said.

Given Davis' background, that's high praise. He played college basketball at Mississippi State in the early 1980s and served as an assistant coach at LSU from 1998 through 2002.

"They've got depth," Davis said. "They've got shooters. They've got inside guys. They've got everything."

And they showed it from start to finish. Even when the Vols stretched their lead into the 40s, they didn't lose their edge.

"At halftime, we kept telling ourselves we were down by 10," UT guard Chris Lofton said.

Give them credit for a great imagination, too. The Vols outscored MTSU 25-7 in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Overall, this was as much about style points as points.

"At halftime, we had flashbacks to the (Pilot) Rocky Top League," Lofton said.

The reference to the popular local summer league was appropriate. There was more structure Tuesday night but just as many highlights.

During the first timeout, fans were treated to highlights of the previous three games on the Jumbotron. The real stuff was even better. In fact, you could have made a healthy-sized video on Smith highlights alone.

No wonder, Davis repeatedly looked down at the floor in the final few minutes. He obviously had seen enough.

The outcome was even more frustrating given his team's preparation. Unhappy with the Blue Raiders' shoddy defense in the previous three games, Davis practiced his team twice Monday - once from 5 to 7:30 a.m. and again in the evening.

"It didn't work, to say the least," Davis said. "We didn't get anything accomplished defensively."

Conversely, UT's defense was relentless. In the early going, a missed shot qualified as progress for the Blue Raiders, who began the game with five consecutive turnovers.

UT coach Bruce Pearl said he had never had a team play any better at this stage of the season. As well as the team played, you couldn't help but wonder how much better it will be in another month, particularly since talented forward J.P. Prince won't be eligible until mid-December.

So it's a mid-week game against a nondescript opponent in December. And you're wondering if you should make the effort?

What a game!!! Coach Pearl's boys are hitting on all eight cylinders now. Keep up this level of play, and it's the Final Four this season.

Ok, Pearl, we've got on the orange-tinted glassses now! Keep it up, imagine, a Tennessee team that's exciting! You and Pat provide the dose of up-beat sunshine the Hill needs!

Good article!

It was nice to see the team having fun, even if it was at the expense of an in-state school.

Pearl had an interesting comment on his post game show that pointed to the only real problem he's got. (my words not his)...too many good players and too few minutes to develop the kind of on floor chemistry that will be necessary to beat the teams that can actually compete with these guys. And this is without Prince. There are worse problems to have and I'm guessing he'll deal with it.

Hmmm.....here's to dreaming about raising TWO national championship banners next November!!!

Touchdown - you only bought that BIG ORANGE KOOL-AID KEG cause they threw in a BIG ORANGE BONG with it! haha

Games this weekend will reveal alot regarding rotation. Got a feeling a couple of guys are about to be disappointed.

Jordan gives us better stability and ball distribution than Ramar while Ramar gives us more spark off the bench than Jordan. Wouldn't mind seeing it stay as it was last night.

Now go kick Huggy Bear's cheating a$$ fellas!!!

The other big style point I noticed was sportsmanship. I really like the product Pearl is putting on the floor. Chism recognized one MTSU player for making one heck of a move on him when we were up by 60. They guy missed the shot, but he went around Chism who was playing good defense like he was standing still. Jajuan did the same thing before he came out of the game. I like the swagger without the arrogance.

Great performance by a great team. However, most of the fans appear to be super-glued to their seats. Unless they smell food, in which case they waddle up or down the stairs for a visit to the concession stands.

I wish schools were posting game video on the web. Would love to see the rerun. No, can't get to the games, live 1,000 miles away.

Thank goodness for the web, at least I can follow the teams that way.

The real thing that sucks about living far from the sec is that no one understands the conference.

TouchdownTN. Who have YOU PERSONALLY ever played for that could EVER have been a winner? Our football coach's last name is FULMER. He's a future hall of famer, and you're nobody. I just don't have any idea as to how you could consider yourself qualified to determine what a winner is. Of course, the Lady Vols are champions by virtue of Pat Summitt's talent, commitment and uncompromising dedication to winning, as well as her dedication to each and every one of her student athletes. I'd bet you couldn't possibly understand why she'd be the first person to testify to the total excellence of CPF. Respect is the product of those deserving. CPF and Coach Summitt deserve it. When will you?

DSaVol writes:

scvolalum: STFU!!! Until he beats somebody that matters his name is FOOLMER! And he's obviously been FOOLING YOU for, oh, about 7 years now. So keep your preaching down there in the land of the Shamecocks.

We may get a good indication of how physically tough this team is willing to play on Friday night. WVU is big and Huggins is sure to invoke the "mug 'em and chug 'em" strategy.

scvolalum: Those spoiled fans still living in Knoxville don't know what fans of other teans suffer through - We see it down here in SC. UT fans are blessed to have such loyal and sucessful football, mens and womens basketball coaches. All three could win an SEC championship this year!

Nice article... I'm thankful for the free stream on utsports.com when the game are not televised, because the radio will not pick up in my house..
