Strange: Fulmer to be compensated after one of his better jobs

Does UT need to win the SEC championship game to make this season a success?

Sunday found Mike Hamilton in a search mode.

Not for a coach. Rather, for an optimal bowl scenario to reward a Tennessee football team and a staff that have persevered through some interesting and trying times.

The coach, Phillip Fulmer, is doing just fine. At the moment, he wouldn't trade places with a guy holding a winning Powerball ticket with Halle Berry on call-waiting.

Fulmer has a dream week in front of him. Every coach in the SEC wanted to be preparing his team for the conference championship game Saturday in Atlanta. Only Fulmer and LSU's Les Miles are.

If the Vols win, Fulmer leads his alma mater back to the Sugar Bowl for the first time since 1990, when he was merely the offensive coordinator.

Even if UT doesn't beat LSU, Fulmer goes into bowl practice knowing his name will still be on his office door when spring practice cranks up.

Let the coaching carousel spin. Tennessee will be sitting this one out. Same as it ever was.

Fulmer was vulnerable this year, perhaps for the first time in what has been a long, successful - but not as successful lately - career.

And he answered the bell with one of his better coaching jobs, for which he deserves to be rewarded.

Hamilton, UT's men's athletic director, said Sunday "it's reasonable to expect" Fulmer will receive a contract extension and a "change in compensation" when the time comes after the season.

"I feel good about the way we finished,'' Hamilton said. "We handled adversity in a good way.''

Nobody felt good about the way Tennessee started.

That would be a two-touchdown loss at California followed two weeks later by a 59-20 embarrassment at Florida.

Coming on the heels of the 5-6 bomb in 2005 and the late fade in '06, Fulmer's job-approval rating was at low ebb. Even some long-time backers were wavering if not abandoning ship.

A statement win over Georgia was muted two weeks later by a 41-17 dud at Alabama.

Now comes the part about handling adversity in a good way:

A five-game winning streak in which the Vols dodged bullets, got and made breaks, and were resourceful enough - with a few inches to spare - to end up as Eastern Division champions.

All kinds of numbers have been floated this season to chronicle Tennessee's general decline, but here's one more:

Saturday, the Vols will play in the SEC championship game for the fifth time in 11 years and that's a claim no other team in the league can make over that time.

If this isn't a program winning enough championships to suit everyone, it remains one that is at least consistently in the hunt. In the SEC, a league that eats its young, there's something to be said for that.

What this 2007 team lacked in talent or experience it has compensated with in resilience. If the first two items are counted against the CEO, the latter goes to his credit.

I'm not saying this is Fulmer's best coaching job. That would be 13-0 in 1998. Winning the East in 2004 with true-freshman quarterbacks wasn't bad, either.

But given the shortcomings this team had on defense, given the lack of big-play potential on offense, given the horrid early kick coverage, getting to 9-3, 6-2 SEC, and a date in Atlanta is good work.

"This team has been fun,'' Fulmer said Sunday night. "It wasn't fun to go through some of the things we went through, but it's been fun to see how they've improved.

"And that's at almost every position, not just one or two spots.''

Improvement? Some would argue that Tennessee is finishing about where it was projected to finish back in August. Thus, why applaud the coach?

Here's why I do: When those August projections were made, no one had a full grasp of how short those defensive shortcomings were.

After watching Cal, Southern Miss and Tim Tebow & Co. rip up and down the field, I had to pause and look at the 2007 season in a completely new light.

And the light I thought I saw at the end of Tennessee's tunnel wasn't the Georgia Dome all lit up on Dec. 1.

Some of the posters on here will never be satisfied unless we're undefeated and No. 1

The observation I'd make on this season is kind of like 1984 when nobody thought Brigham Young deserved to win the National Champioship because they didn't play anybody but there was no clear other team to give it to. It looks like Mizzou or somebody else as equally undeserving may wind up there--there isn't any clear No 1 and the next week and bowl games aren't going to clear that up

For years, I've been one of Coach Fulmer's staunchest supporters. That was up to and including the 2005 season. I argued then that he and the staff should be given a chance to turn things around.

Flash forward to this season. Just a few short weeks ago, I was completely convinced he and the entire staff should go. And I was vocal about it.

Now, as far as I'm concerned, he and the staff are on probation. They've certainly earned the right to come back for 2008. But, in my mind, they'll start next season on probation as well.

We are still not playing well, as everyone knows. We have only played two games of what I consider Tennessee football this season -- Georgia and Arkansas. Those two games are my standard.

Hamilton just gave Coach Fulmer a new contract and raise back in March -- seven months ago.

Coach Fulmer's contract now extends through the 2013 season. He will start next season with five full seasons remaining on his contract.

Is a another contract extension warranted at this point -- based on the past six games? No way, in my view. Would it be even if we win the SEC Championship? No.

I don't mind giving him a raise but extending his contract after this season -- twice in an nine-month period -- seems ludicrous.

Let's review things next December.

How about we just take Chavis and Slade's salaries and give them to Fulmer, since neither one have done a thing with a Defense that should be way way better than it is.

THE_VOL writes:

Are you serious Mike Hamilton???? I thought we were already paying $2+ million a year TO WIN THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP not just get to the game. Shouldn't a coach be required to beat at least TWO teams with less than 4 losses to get a raise? And shouldn't one have to beat the worst three teams in the division by more than a total of SIX points to warrant an extension???? The combined records of the teams we beat was 58-50 - take away GA and they were an even 50-50. The three BLOWOUT losses were to teams that went a combined 21-14 - with ALA and CAL having 6 and 5 losses respectively. Not exactly a killer schedule that these geniuses barely slipped by. Sorry Mike but Saban is the exception for idiotic and desperate Bama folks not the new measuring stick for everybody else. Not only does Fulmer not deserve a raise OR an extension (five years security is plenty and you can ask Notre Dame about that) but this staff damned sure doesn't either. It's time we start paying once the product is delivered and not on the "magic dust" promises that it will be!

why36knot, I stand corrected. He did not get a raise back in March, only a two-year contrct extension. Thanks for correcting me.

Interesting: Coach Fulmer apparently just made $125K with that win over KY -- $50K for winning the SEC East, and $75K for apeparing in the SEC Championship game.

Wonder how much Cut and Chavis and the assistants made?

"In addition to his annual salary of $2.05 million, Fulmer can earn $37,500 for a berth in a non-BCS bowl, $50,000 for a first-place finish in the SEC Eastern Division, $75,000 for an SEC Championship game appearance, and $100,000 for winning the SEC or appearing in a BCS game. He can also get $150,000 for appearing in the BCS National Championship game and $250,000 for winning the BCS title."

Everyone has heard the old saying that the best thing about freshmen is they grow up to be sophomores. Tennessee played a lot of freshmen this year. With the exception of Eric Berry, most of those freshmen didn't start or see significant playing time until after the season started.

How many of us, and I include myself in the question, who post here, have coached as much as youth league football, or played anything more than high school ball?

Tennessee lost two games in the conference this season, one to Florida, which has the probable Heisman winner quarterbacking it, and the other to Alabama, which is just one of those things.

Nobody will deny Steve Spurrier is a great coach, but he's currently in the middle of the longest losing streak of his college coaching career. South Carolina went from the No. 6 team in the nation to just another 6-6 team that shared 4th place in the East with Kentucky. Brooks has done a commendable job at Kentucky, but I doubt if Kentucky will ever be a major player.

Saban, a $4 million bust. LSU could have easily lost a couple of more games. Orgeron at Ole Miss, oh yeah, he was canned yesterday.

I know several will disagree with me when I say this, but in my opinion, and I stress it is my opinion, the only coach that has done as good or better a job than Phillip Fulmer in the SEC this year is Sylvester Croom at Miss. State.

Most coaches have the five-year extension renewed every year for recruiting purposes. If they have that magic five years on the contract they can recruit telling a high school senior he'll be at State U when the kid is a redshirt senior. Without the extension other programs would hold it against a coach in the recruiting process.

I am proud to be a Phillip Fulmer supporter. I don't think any coach is worth the money UT or anybody else is paying them, but based on the market there's a lot to be said for Fulmer.

Most importantly, he's a Tennessee Volunteer through and through not some paid hit man who will be gone when the next "best" offer comes along.

TommyJack writes:

Like I said earlier...a bonus maybe. But an extension makes NO sense and would be regretted.
What's the point? The upside?

Has any other team in the SEC won their side more than UT has in the last 10 years?? This will be our 5th trip to the ATL sine 97. I believe thats the best over that time period. We have also had a few sub-par seasons in the there, But to use a little Maddenism, you have to get to the championship game in order to win it. Great time to be a VOL...

DickeytheSimpkins writes:

"Are you serious Mike Hamilton???? I thought we were already paying $2+ million a year TO WIN THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP not just get to the game. "

No you pay 2+ million a year because that is the market rate for Fulmer. Alabama pays 4+ million a year for Saban. Big time schools pay big time cash. Fill that stadium and all.

"And shouldn't one have to beat the worst three teams in the division by more than a total of SIX points to warrant an extension???? "
Wager much? Were you spouting the same thing when Tenn was 5 and 6?Of course you weren't. As far as I know there is a WIn and a Loss column. Each game goes in one or the other. There is no "wow big winner" column.

"Not only does Fulmer not deserve a raise OR an extension (five years security is plenty and you can ask Notre Dame about that) but this staff damned sure doesn't either. It's time we start paying once the product is delivered and not on the "magic dust" promises that it will be!"

So your point is, and let me be sure I get this right is that Fulmer shouldn't get a raise because he didn't win the east this year. Have I got that right? Oh, wait he did win the east. So it must be that Fulmer didn't win the east by enough. How many more points would you like them to score. It may just be me but pretty much enough points to win the east are enough.

Let me see if I can channel your wishes. Fulmer should only get a rasie when he wins the national championship with 13 straight blowouts. Does that cover it? Just asking cause right now you sound like a whiner, a b-b-b-but little child who wants everything just so. I can think of, well, turns out EVERY OTHER SEC east coach isn't palying for a championship. I guess Fulmer deserves more money than all those coaches right?

1volk-nowi-tall writes:

This is not the time to even discuss a pay raise or an extension. None of us, who really care about the vols and understand that for every game there is a loser and that the football does indeed bounce funny and not always your way, really expected that Coach Fulmer would be gone this year. Most of us understand that 2005 was an unusual year. It is truly impossible for any team to be number one all the time. Just ask the Gators. I don't control who coaches at UT. I do however expect that those who do control that matter will wait until after two more games to make their assessment of where the program is. Eric Ainge said it best after the KY game, when he said,"we are blessed to be where we are." In reality UT did not win the KY game anymore than KY lost it. But that said. let this team take that win and make the best of it, play in a bowl game and then evaluate the program. There has been and will continue to be too much talk before games. If Mike Hamilton has any kind of business acuity he knows that you evaluate the company by looking at the bottom line. Phil will be around for several more years, but for an honest evaluation the AD should wait until the next two games have been played.

A friend of mine left a message for me tonight where he acknowledged I predicted this scenario 4 weeks ago. It wasn't hard. We are the Vols. We don't give up. We are loyal. To the end. The haters have faded into the woodwork. If you don't like Coach Fulmer, tough. He's overweight. So are most of us. He screws up. So do we. A friend of mine (we call him "Flame" since college) says that last year against Florida we played "prevent" offense in the forth quarter. Maybe we did. But we'll also probably be in the hunt for the national championship next year, and it will owe a lot to the groundwork laid by this team. Same as the 1997 team. We didn't have a great year this year. But as the dust settles we are ahead of all the teams we lost to. All of them. We struggled against teams who we used to beat by 30. But we won. We owe LSU. We know it. They know it. We were talking about making reservations for the Rose Bowl while we were sitting in the stands in 2001. So were a lot of you. LSU messed that up for us with about 10 or 20 quarterback draws. Can't wait for Saturday. Bring your lunch pail.

Duh! I thought UT coaches were paid to win games and titles. The athletic director made a bonehead move when he started talking about contract extensions and raises prematurely. (Or maybe he did it on purpose to get people riled up)

Consider this: If UT's athletic director actually reduced the head coach's salary, what would you think would happen? Right! Coach would get his feelings hurt, get mad, but he would "stay the course" and remain where he is.

The prudent move is to wait until the season is over before making public any plans to "reward" for what they are being compensated handsomely for in the first place.

I hear to much, shuda, couda, wouda on here by people that probably never played ball in thier lives let alone could coach a game.Armchair coaches and QB's are useless. The only way I'm happy with Fulmer staying is if he demotes Cutcliffe or gives him the boot. A great QB coach and a lousy OC. I've had enough of the dink and dunk offense (first 3/4 of season) and him falling asleep at the wheel in the second half of nearly every game. He hasn't a clue of what a halftime adjustment means. As for other coaches, I woulndn't be too sad if Slade was fired either. We haven't been able to cover the pass since he arrived, experienced secondary or not.

Please publish a list of candidates that meets all this criteria plus a resume of success in the most difficult conference in college football. Go ahead, publish the names and let's discuss.

If Hamilton were to fire Fulmer at this point, no outstanding candidate with a lick of sense would touch this job and high odds are we'd be right in the same sad coaching merry-go-round as AL, Ole Miss, Miami, Nebraska, UGA in the 90's...yea that's exactly what we need.

I doubt any of you hold youselves to the same ridiculous standards of perfection as you hold CPF and certainly none of you would expect to be given a chance to correct job performance issues that you were responsible for and I'm sure all of you consider yourselves to be overpaid for your job and I'm most certain that you all live and breathe every waking moment for you company and you spend 6-7 days a week focused on your job working 10-12 hours per day and extending yourselves gracefully to demands of athletes, parents, doners, wives, press, kids, community, etc., etc.

If we continually bouncing around 6,7,8 wins with lackluster play and recruiting violations and large number of players in trouble, I'm sure Hamilton would make the change quickly. Luckily Hamilton is running this program and not you loosers.

You 'Foolmer must go' whack jobs are fools to be ignored and that's the last I'm going to write on this topic as I plan to go back to ignoring you.

The players and coaches did a great job of recovering in what was headed toward a real bad season. I think that all the criticism from Vol fans and others after being blown out by California, Florida, and Alabama, maybe lit a fire under Fulmer to help turn the season around and a little luck to go with it. Vol fans will have Fulmer around probably until he is ready to leave. Do you think any of the schools with openings will go after him?

Lets keep thing in perspective...

We would all love to go 14-0 and win another national title...every year would be great too.

However, thats not going to happen and we all knew it would not happen this year. At least those of us who truly follow the Vols knows this was not going to be a national title hunt kind of season.

Lets look at facts: Coming into this season we had almost zero experience at WR. We started a true freshman and a freshman WR in our defensive backfield, we had all new starters on the d-line, we had inconsistent RB's (one was eventually kicked off the team), and Erik Ainge broke his finger less than a week before the opener. We had a killer schedule as always and especially in this kind of year when anything goes...

For this team to go 9-3 (6-2) is without a doubt a marvelous coaching job by Fulmer and his staff. After going 1-2 my thought was okay, lets see some improvement during the rest of the season. We saw it as evidence by the Georgia and Arkansas games. Ainge stayed steady despite several drops by his inexperienced WR he finished with 27 TD's and 60+ completion %. Arian Foster topped the 1,000 yard mark, Eric Berry will leave UT as the greatest DB in our history (in fact, at times it seemed like he was the only one who knew how to tackle), and even though the defense still struggled they made plays when it counted the most (ie: shutting down Vandy in the second half, creating turnovers against SC, tackling Woodson in OT)

Does Fulmer deserve a raise and an extension, maybe, maybe not, but he definately coached well this season and deserves some recognition for what he has accomplished.
