No. 6 Tennessee isn't that far behind No. 2-ranked Arizona ... especially in relays.
Coach John Trembley's Vols placed second in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay and also in the 400 medley relay - just behind the Wildcats in each race - Thursday night in the Texas Invitational at Austin, Texas.
Arizona won the 200 relay in 1:17.74 to UT's 1:18.18 (Octavio Alesi, Jonas Persson, Nolan Morrell and Barry Murphy).
The Vols ended the night with a 3:09.74 swim by Michael Wolf, Murphy, Alesi and Persson. Arizona won in 3:09.08. Tennessee's B team placed 10th in 3:21.96.
Alesi was fourth in the 100 butterfly (46.57 seconds) in a race won by Arizona's Albert Subirats (45.08). Olympian Aaron Peirsol was seventh.
Alesi's swim bettered school records by set by Olympians Melvin Stewart and Ricky Busquets.
UT's next-best individual finish was in 1-meter diving by Michael Muscari - 274.90 points for eighth. Texas' Matt Cooper won (328.85).
UT's Andrew Bree took seventh in the 200 individual medley and Andrew Thirwell 10th. Piersol won in 1:44.80.
Sun Devils Swim Club's Nick Brunelli won the 50 free in 19.17.
Freshman Geoff Sanders took 11th in the 500 free (4:23.99) won by Arizona's Jean Basson (4:13.42).
The Lady Vols' Lauren LeRoy (298.70) was runnerup to Texas' Mary Yarrison (337.60) in 3-meter diving.
The meet continues today and ends Saturday.
