Tennessee reserve linebacker Dorian Davis practiced Monday, two days after being charged with disorderly conduct for his involvement in a physical altercation over the weekend in his hometown of Iowa City, Iowa.
When asked for comment before practice Monday afternoon, UT coach Phillip Fulmer said, "I'll have to find out more of the details on it. I haven't got all of the facts yet."
Davis, who missed the Orange and White Game due to a suspension for violating team rules, was charged and released after a verbal altercation with a mutual acquaintance turned physical, Iowa City police said.
Davis allegedly "pushed and struck" Charles Jones, 21, outside Jones' apartment at 3455 E. Court St. on Saturday evening.
Jones then called police, who charged Davis, 20, with the misdemeanor around 6:15 p.m. after he admitted his involvement, according to a police report released Monday.
Jones was not charged, Iowa City police public information officer Sgt. Troy Kelsay said Monday.
"Davis and Jones apparently had never met before this incident, although they have a mutual acquaintance," said Iowa City police public information officer Sgt. Troy Kelsay. "That in part led to the verbal exchange and the escalation to a physical confrontation."
Davis was charged and released from the scene without being taken to jail, although the incident is considered an arrest, Kelsay said.
"Officers who dealt with Davis said he was very cooperative," Kelsay said. "He didn't have any other issues. It was just a simple misdemeanor. They chose to charge and release him, which is pretty typical in this particular offense."
Disorderly conduct and simple assault are both misdemeanors and carry similar punishments (usually a fine if found guilty), however police must only show a suspect to be a "willing participant" and not acting in self-defense to levy a disorderly conduct charge. The burden of proof is slightly higher on an assault charge, Kelsay said.
Davis must enter a plea by his Nov. 7 court date, however he could have an attorney enter a plea on his behalf or file a written plea to avoid a trip back to Iowa City.
Tennessee hosts Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 3 and Arkansas on Nov. 10.
Davis, a sophomore, has played in all 16 of his career games at Tennessee, primarily on special teams. He has nine tackles and a forced fumble in four games this season.

How could it be a fight? We all know that no one from the defense has hit anybody all year.

I'm suprised ESPN isn't all over this one.

That's the thing though - from this article, it sounds like the altercation took place inside the apartment.

ESPN get involved? They usually get involved when the team involved is nationally relevant and or actually ranked.
Tennessee welcome to the Purdue years.

dowdpat, I think it probably is over a girl now that I think about it.... I initially thought it might be about over a guy....but our defense has a phobia about grabbing onto guys and wrestling them to the ground, so be assured that you are correct.

Just picked up the USA TODAY and there is the article. Already received e-mails from Ohio State people and all of the SEC teams about our "great" program. It is not real great to be a Tenn Vol right now.

I wonder if he'll get suspended by Urban Myth for the LSU game? Or is he'll wait to deal with him until they play another cup cake team.

So, was the 'mutual acquaintance' female? Perhaps a former girl-friend? It's not rutting season in South Texas yet, but it's probably cooler in Iowa. Here, the velvet is off the horns, and hanging from mesquite trees. Go Vols!
