Raleigh beefs up Orange & White game

Tennessee's annual Orange & White baseball game will have a new look this season.

In past years, the Vols have played a single intrasquad game marking the end of fall practice. New coach Todd Raleigh, however, said his team will have the Orange & White World Series, a best-of-five series.

"Simulating actual games is something that really allows you to evaluate where you are as a team," Raleigh said. "This type of fall series is something I've done in the past, and I feel like it is a great opportunity for the players to improve. Both teams are going to want to win, and it should be really competitive and fun for the guys as well."

Games will be 3 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Sunday, 3 p.m. Oct. 10, 1:30 p.m. Oct. 20 and 1 p.m. Oct. 21. All games will be played at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Vols will be split into two squads via a draft, with one team coached by infielders coach Bradley LeCroy and the other led by pitching coach Fred Corral. All five games will be played no matter the series outcome.

Admission is free. However, due to ongoing construction at the stadium, the netting that has served to protect spectators from foul balls is not in place.

Raleigh also said that there would be no alumni game this year, due mostly to logistics issues associated with the stadium renovations.

Men's Basketball: Coach Bruce Pearl will be the speaker at Carson-Newman College's Athlete Appreciation Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The banquet is by invitation only.

Men's Golf: Tennessee finished eighth at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club in Chicago.

The Vols shot a final-round 13-over-par 293 for their second top-10 finish of the season. UT shot 289-303-293 - 885.

Charlie Ford paced the Vols with a 1-under 69 in the third and final round. The senior finished tied for seventh individually, his third top-10 finish in the past five tournaments.

Junior Chris Paisley (73) tied for 18th. and senior Philip Pettitt (75) tied for 36th.

Oklahoma State won by seven shots over Texas, followed by Indiana, Florida State and Stanford.

Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State won the individual title.

Women's Soccer: Junior forward Kylee Rossi was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week .The Lady Vols (7-1-1, 2-0 SEC) also rose to seventh in the Soccer America poll, their highest ranking this season.

Men's Tennis: Freshman J.P. Smith defeated the nation's 70th-ranked singles player to advance to the second round of the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Championships played in Tulsa, Okla.

Smith, ranked 108th, defeated Jean-Yves Aubone of Florida State in a third-set tiebreaker to advance to the second round. Smith needs to win two more matches to join teammate Chris Racz in the 64-man main draw.

Davey Sandgren lost his first-round match to Drexel's Omar Laalej 6-4, 6-4.

Sandgren and Smith begin qualifying for doubles today with a match against Reid Carleton and Kiril Dimitrov of Duke.

Whats this? A coach breaking tradition? How dare he! I mean who does he think he is?

That's right! He's an innovator, a new thinker, someone who realizes that staying the course only makes you go in a circle. I applaud the fortitude to make change.

Sounds reasonable

It is nice to see the new HC have the stones to do something differently. As long as he gets rid of the "black" in UT baseball I will be in his corner.

These Fall Intra Squad World Series aren't anything ground breaking or new.
