UT vs. Mississippi State likely on pay-per-view

The Vol Network is close to securing the rights to televise Tennessee's game at Mississippi State on Oct. 13 on a pay-per-view basis.

To do so, the broadcast company has to finalize an agreement with Mississippi State and attain a waiver from CBS, the SEC's network television partner.

Under the SEC's agreement with CBS, only one pay-per-view game may be aired opposite the CBS game at 3:30. The UT-Mississippi State game is scheduled to kickoff at 2:30 EDT.

Schools are allowed only one exemption, meaning UT's game with Louisiana-Lafayette on Nov. 3 will not be televised unless the 4 p.m. start time is rescheduled. That seems unlikely due to homecoming festivities.

The plan could be finalized today.

The last time a UT game against an SEC opponent was televised on pay-per-view was in 1995 when the Vols played at Arkansas.

Healing Up: Linebacker Ryan Karl said an offseason back injury hampered his play in UT's first four games more than he predicted.

Karl suffered a back injuiry in the weight room during summer workouts. He participated in only one preseason practice. Catching up to game speed has been his toughest challenge.

"It was a lot faster than I remembered it last year," the senior said.

Karl's back isn't the only thing that has slowed him. He suffered an ankle sprain against Southern Miss on Sept 8. Last week's open date certainly helped it heal.

"This is my week to step it up big time," Karl said. "I feel healthy. That's the first game of the year I've felt like that."

In the off-week, Karl has been focused on improving his tackling. His 17 takedowns ranks sixth on the team, but like many of his fellow defenders, Karl has missed more tackles than he'd care to remember.

"That's one of the things I've been trying to work on," Karl said.

Rogan Almost Ready: Former Fulton High School star Dennis Rogan is closer to making an impact on kick returns after totaling 104 yards on three kickoff returns in last week's JV game against Hargrave Military Academy.

"The JV game was outstanding for Dennis," UT coach Phillip Fulmer said about the freshman. "That put us much more in a mode of giving him an opportunity to return some kicks, the fact that he handled those well. I'm looking forward to seeing him do that when we gets out there for us. He's really close to being where we want him to be as a return guy."

Britton Boots: Punter Britton Colquitt drilled kickoffs in the early portion of Thursday's practice and is ready to handle the kick off duties, Fulmer said.

"There was about a 30-mile-an-hour wind before that storm came in," Fulmer said. "But he kicks the ball well, he kicks it higher."

Jones Ready: True freshman wide receiver Gerald Jones will dress for Saturday's game and appears to be fully recovered from a hamstring injury that has kept him unavailable since the Southern Miss game.

"He's our second Z (receiver), and we need the depth there," Fulmer said. "He was doing really well before he pulled the hamstring, and kind of picked back up where he left off."

Injury Report: Defensive end Andre Mathis (shoulder) is the only anticipated injury holdout.

Visiting: The Vols are expecting four official visitors this weekend: athlete Jeff Demps from South Lake High School in Groveland, Fla., and defensive tackle Marcus Forston, receiver Aldarius Johnson and linebacker Sean Spence from Miami Northwestern (Fla.) High School.

Barrett Jones is also scheduled to make the trip from Cordova. The offensive lineman from Evangelical Christian School is the News Sentinel's third-best prospect in Tennessee.

Drew Edwards contributed to this report.

I'm glad our players are ready to "step it up" 5 games(& 2 losses) into the season.

I'd rather have the Miss. St. game on pay per view. I can watch the La. Laf. game in person.

I would love for the tackling to be better, to cover punts and kickoffs and also to run back punts a lot better. Kickoffs runbacks are pretty good. In other words it would be great for the special teams to be great for a change.

MOOREVOLS writes:

No question, special teams, D-line and line backers have to play better for us to have a chance the rest of this season.

Will the pay for view cost more than a couple bucks? If so count me out.

Man, it feels good knowing there's a healthy Ryan Karl on the field this week AND to find out that he's been working on his tackling...Georgia's in big trouble

We have to be getting close to setting a season record for PPV games. BTW, good work with the contract with Host Communications who makes it nearly impossible for anyone who is in TN but outside of the local cable in Knoxville to order the game with blackout restrictions.

It is pathetic when we are having to negotiate PPV contracts for an SEC GAME! It seems that we are becoming unimportant to the networks. Also, way to endear yourself to the fan base, Mike (todays Tennessean). I never believed it possible. We are not getting TV time, and the AD has the gall to say in so many words that he cares not what the fan base thinks. SHEEESH!

If anyone has extra tickets for this weekends game i need an extra pair? Go Vols...

I was wondering what happened to those tired UT athletic cliches like "step up" and "tempo." I am glad somebody is remembering to use them.

OH how hard it is to watch Randy Sanders on ESPN get the spotlight at the Kentucky South Carolina pregame show. OH the pain..IT must be painful for everyone else too especially our current coaching staff. OUCH!!

Wait a minute! Didn't Karl say the defense was playing too fast against Cal?

Randy Sanders Rules!!

Can anyone tell me if the Vol Network has coverage in the Myrtle Beach Area? I plan on being at the beach during the Mississippi State game and need to have some means of listening to the game. I have not missed attending, viewing or listening to the VOLS in 40 years.
Thanks

Colliervol writes:

I know one thing about Kentucky. You had better put some pressure on Woodson or he will kill you. But if you do get pressure on him (as SC is doing), he panics and tries to create something out of nothing. Can we pressure him like SC is doing? Also looks like KY can't handle the pressure of a top 10 ranking.

Colliervol writes:

And South Carolina's offense looks weak too. Smelley doesn't impress me at all. Both teams have a good pass rush but that sort of plays to our strength. Ainge can handle that.

scvols writes:

happydazedame - You better take a laptop if you want to listen to the game. Unless you can find a sports bar that is showing the pay-per-view.

iowavol writes:

Agree with you germantown...Neither one of these teams looks like they will be a problem for us. I do believe Woodson is a little affected by the lofty ratings. And Smelley looks scared. He's certainly been tagged a few time tonight.

Could I please have some of what you are drinking or smoking??
Thanks!

iowavol writes:

No problem coltsfan - it's called glass half full. Really, you don't have to go far to get it. Just go around the corner and take a hard look in the bathroom mirror and tell yourself you are going to think positive because all this negative phooey is real easy to do but doesn't amount to much.

NCCOLTSFAN writes:

iowavol:OK.Forgive my poor attempt at humor.
I want my Vols to win as bad as anyone, but I just don't see it happening.
I pray you are right and I am wrong.
Take Care!

GreerVol22 writes:

Again, if a player isn't healthy (Karl) and keeps playing and is obviously missing tackles because he is in pain, shouldn't the coaching staff realize that? Again, the staff is too content...fat salaries, fat bellies, fat chickens laying eggs.

bigbluevol writes:

Greer- I don't think they're too content. I think that they err on the side of loyalty. An upperclassman is going to get every chance to play, regardless of the circumstances.

GreerVol22 writes:

Colquitt was hurt and he has not kicked, why would Karl not be given the same time off to heal? Its hard to argue the importance of one of these players over the other. Point is, I'm not really sure the staff is focused on anything consistant at this point.

RangerForSix writes:

Once we thump Georgia Saturday, people will be wanting to watch us play. It doesn't really matter though, just 'destroy the dawgs'...
Get a 'winning streak going', and the media exposure, bowl games, and stuff like that, take care of themselves.
JUST WIN BABY!
