When you think of Alabama football, an offense with "bells and whistles" isn't the first thing that comes to mind.
That, however, is exactly what the Crimson Tide (5-2, 3-1 SEC) will throw against No. 20 Tennessee (4-2, 2-1) and its young secondary on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
"They're spreading it out and throwing the ball a little more,'' reported UT defensive coordinator John Chavis.
"They've got a multitude of formations, motions, shifts. They've got all the bells and whistles to go along with an offense that's loaded with talent.''
The Vols' secondary may be loaded with talent as well, but comes with a disclaimer: Tennessee is starting two true freshmen.
Eric Berry has been on the field since the opening snap of the season and has settled in at strong safety. Brent Vinson, who began the year as a receiver, has started the past two games, SEC wins over Georgia and Mississippi State, at cornerback.
"We have never started two true freshmen in the secondary,'' said Chavis. "You try to nurse your way through starting one.''
The Vols have a history of nursing their way through one. DeRon Jenkins, Terry Fair, Jason Parker, Rashad Baker and Jonathan Hefney started as true freshmen.
With a first-year starter at the other corner in Marsalous Johnson and senior Hefney getting off to a slow start, the Vols have been vulnerable to say the least.
They rank last in the SEC in pass-efficiency defense. Only one league team has fewer than UT's five interceptions. Only Alabama has allowed more than the 10 touchdown passes completed against Tennessee.
There are encouraging signs. The Vols are allowing fewer of the big plays that plagued them through the September.
"We're seeing fewer mistakes,'' said Chavis.
Vinson is getting his hands on a few balls. Hefney has played closer to form the past two games and the staff thinks Berry is a future star in the making.
The inexperience, however, limits what schemes and strategies the defensive staff can use. The arsenal is growing, but slowly.
"We've gone round and round,'' said UT coach Phillip Fulmer, "trying to make sure we're doing the right things to not put them in terrible positions they're not ready for.''
Are they ready for Alabama? Tune in Saturday's 12:30 p.m. kickoff (TV: WVLT) to find out.
The past two weeks the Vols faced a sophomore quarterback in Georgia's Matthew Stafford and a true freshman in Mississippi State's Wesley Carroll.
Alabama's John Parker Wilson, a junior, will be starting his 21st consecutive game.
Coach Nick Saban brought in Major Applewhite as his offensive coordinator and he's keeping Wilson busy. Wilson has attempted at least 40 passes in three of his past five games, with a career-high 53 in a loss to Florida State.
The Vols are familiar with his favorite receiver. DJ Hall made the big catch in the 2005 game to set up Alabama's game-winning field goal.
Hall has 164 career catches and 11 100-yard receiving games. His 2,497 career receiving yards are one of six school records he holds.
Matt Caddell, the last-second hero of a 41-38 win over Arkansas, has emerged as the No. 2 target with 23 catches.
Keith Brown, a senior and popular target with 78 catches in 2005-06, has been laying low with only nine receptions.
"They're a complete offense,'' said Chavis.
Tennessee's defensive objective Saturday is to not only prevent big plays by the offense but to make a few.
"When you start getting sacks, that's the best way to stop drives,'' Chavis said.
"And breaking up passes is one thing, but we've got to convert it to interceptions and get those turnovers.''

Remember De'wrong way' Jenkins kept Peyton from having the # 18 jersey? That guy was always out of position when at UT. Somehow he played in the NFL for awhile.

Best way to keep John Parker from completing passes is to knock him loopy... Let's blitz and knock the competition out of him.

I think our boys in the secondary are ready for this one. I know they gave up alot early in the season, but they seemed to have settled down and started playing the way they're supposed to. They sure looked good against Ga. and this will be they're third SEC game on the road in a hostile environment(thank god it's being played just after breakfast!) so we'll see what they're made of. Either way, I'm all Vol so lets go beat BAMMER!

When you start two Freshmen and Johnson who's not played alot you are going to get beat sometimes. After all this is the SEC the NFL's AAA farm league. Berry and Vinson are great atheletes and they will continue to improve. This group will be very good by seasons end. Let's all hope that run starts Saturday. We saw what Berry is capable of in the Tebow Int return for TD. This group just needs experience and confidence. Beating Bama brings both.

Berry and Vinson have apparently earned the playing time, are learning from mistakes and will be experienced come next year. I'm all for seeing some other freshmen get game experience in preparation for the future.

Is Ben Martin totally healthy? When is he going bust out?

Alabama looks as weak as they have in a while. I am not sold on JP Wilson as an SEC QB. Their secondary is even worse than ours - and we have EA tossing the ball for us.
Hating Bama since 82. Go Vols!

DJ Hall will have 200+ yards receiving and Arenas runs for two TDs. UA 44 - UTk 24. RTR!

BP, you might be right, but I don't think so. No way your defense can stop our offense. I predict Crompton is in the game early in q4. JPW cannot complete passes from his back. Vols Win - Big Time.

bamasperry, looks like i_love football and dlskaggs has changed the kool-aid flavor and sent it to Bama. Don't drink the stuff, it causes brain damage.

"kept peyton from having the #18 jersey"? what kind of stupid are you? why would any player give up his number to some hot shot incoming freshmen? he may be UT's favorite son now, but at the time, he was a skinny dorky kid.

From the statistical department of TouchdownTN: "The Freshmen have not faced a great offense yet and Saturday will be no exception."
Get your facts straight. Florida is the 12th highest scoring offense in D1; Cal is 17th. Florida is 5th in 3rd down conversion, 5th in fourth down conversions, and 4th in QB rating in D1. Our secondary actually has faced "great offense" this season and it didn't turn out well. By the way, Alabama's "no exception" offense ranks 5th in rushing and 5th is passing in the SEC. Be wary of your blanket, absolute statements TouchdownTN.

Let's see, John Chavis vs Major Applewhite. One was playing college football before the other was even born. One was a defensive coordinator when the other was a sophmore in HS. One has been an OC for two years. I'll take that match up.

I don't think we will have any trouble reaching our 34.3 ppg average but the question is, will that be enough? Alabama has a pretty balanced offense although FSU (great D) and Georgia (average D) held them pretty well. Houston did an OK job too. If we can make JP Wilson the only act, we should win easily. If we let them run early, it will be a shootout and there's no way to predict who will have the ball last. Go Vols!!!
volfaninchattanooga writes:
The more simple we keep it, the better the D plays. We out-schemed ourselves into giving up 2 MSU td's. Keep it simple and give ourselves a chance to win.
bigbluevol writes:
hiresanders, FSU does not have a great defense. They have an alright defense. You must be confused with FSU defenses of the past. They couldn't get off the field against Wake Forest and NC State put some points on them. You are wrong again.

"When you start getting sacks, that's the best way to stop drives,'' Chavis said.
We are next to last -- 11th -- in the SEC in sacks.
Maybe this is the game where a pass rush shows up.
Mclevenger1682 writes:
HIRESANDERS; What are you smoking to think FSU has a great defense? Have you watched them play? The only thing more over rated in Fl than their "D" is South Florida, did you see them choke last night?
GO VOLS ROLL THE TIDE!

touchdowntn, do you dislike fulmer because he banned you from "breaking bread" with the team and being involved in recruiting. Methinks that the origins of your grudge are beginning to be revealed.

Didn't Fellows start at the other corner with Hefney as a true freshman?
txsvol#372416 writes:
Better to start the pups that will bite than to try to get the older dogs with loose teeth and a paw that was caught in a trap to hunt. Probably the worst thing we can do is emphasize age and experience over youth and talent against the Tide! I expect Phil to have a very conservative game plan, and to try pulling it out at the end. But if we open it up, we could beat Nick Satan and the Red Elephants by at least three touchdowns. One more thing---Go Vols! BEAT BAMA!!!!! SAVol
