Johnson visiting Clemson

Webb School star Glory Johnson isn’t finished with her official recruiting visits.

Webb coach Shelley Sexton Collier said Johnson, last year’s PrepXtra girls player of the year, is visiting Clemson this weekend.

The 6-foot-3 forward already has been to Tennessee, North Carolina and UCLA. She likely will take her full allotment of five visits, but a fifth school is not known.

Given her schedule, Johnson likely won’t announce her decision until at least November.

In another development, On The Ball Magazine reported junior wing player Kamiko Williams from Northeast High in Clarksville, has committed to Tennessee. The 5-10 Williams made an unofficial campus visit the weekend of Oct. 6.

Williams said in the magazine story, though, that she still was planning to take a full complement of official visits.

Male Presence: The Lady Vols are fortunate to have the use of male practice players for another season.

The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics issued a position statement last year, calling for a ban on the use of such players. UT coach Pat Summitt said the issue, for the time being, has been tabled.

“It’s good for women’s basketball, hello,’’ Summitt said. “I can’t even relate to the thinking. It makes every player better. It makes our game better.”

The guys helped give the Lady Vols a good workout Saturday. They were the opposition in scrimmage sessions that progressed from six minutes in length to eight and then 10.

The result was sporadic play by the Lady Vols and lapses in transition defense and rebounding.

“I could’ve stopped probably three out of every five possessions to correct them, but now we’ve got film,’’ Summitt said. “We can show them the good, the bad and the ugly. There was some of all.”

Here And Now: Like fellow redshirt junior Candace Parker, forward Alex Fuller isn’t certain about her basketball future for next season.

“As of now, I’m not thinking that far ahead,’’ Fuller said. “It kind of depends on how my performance is this season.”

Fuller said her objective this season is, “having a bigger hand in making things happen for the team.”

Fuller averaged six points, four rebounds and nearly 20 minutes per game in a reserve role last season.

Schedule Update: Tennessee’s game at Stanford on Dec. 22 will start at 10:30 p.m. EDT and will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.

Game time for the Nov. 15 game against Oklahoma in Tampa, Fla., has been moved back to 9:30 p.m.

Tipoff for the home game against LSU on Feb. 14 has been moved up to 6:30 p.m. The Feb. 24 home game against Mississippi State will start at 2:30 p.m.

As it stands, 23 of UT’s 29 regular-season games will be televised.

Notebook: Freshman center Kelley Cain took a blow to her head above her right eye in Friday’s practice and was held out of the scrimmage portion of Saturday’s workout.

Is Johnson better than Baugh? They seem to be clones on one another. If they are i'd rather see us get a good guard that can handle the press.

If Pat thinks we need Glory to stay in Knoxville and wear orange then who are we to question her? I don't have one win as a college coach, I might think I can call the shots or select the right young women to recuit but I don't really. Pat has a proven track record so I think I'll believe her when she selects a player to recuit.

Here's the NCAA's "statement" regarding male practice squads:

(Yeah, it's a long URL alright. You'll have to remove all the hard returns I put in.)

Am I reading this right? It doesn't have anything to do with male practice squads. It's just "let's all play fair and give women the opportunities they deserve." Are they afraid that female practice squad potentials will be excluded? That's the only thing I can think of that would make them publish this. And it's certainly a valid point. I'm sure the NCAA thinks there could be countless potential (or already have been) Title IX lawsuits if they didn't cover their, uh... hind ends on this.

But, here's a thought: How many men's b-ball programs would give their eyeteeth to play against the Lady Vols and Pat if the NCAA would let them? I would imagine that we'd have to get out quite a bit of crowd control equipment in Thompson-Boling. Why? Because to anyone watching Pat's girls play the game, it's obvious: The LVs don't play like girls! They used to be the only team that played that way, but now a lot of women's programs are on the bandwagon. And, to turn it around, let's not forget the fervent wish by many UT supporters that Pat would coach the men's team after Buzz left.

Will we ever see male vs. female teams? Or integrated squads? I doubt in my lifetime. The social stereotypes are too ingrained. But in the long run I wouldn't bet against it. Candace Parker and JuJuan Smith on the court? Suh-weet!

wewhite, while I share your enthusiasm for the Lady Vols and the level they play, I'd have to disagree that any men's college team would want to practice against the Lady Vols or even a WNBA team. That would be no competition. The men play at a totally different level. The men's practice squad that the Lady Vols play agains are a bunch of college rejects who were pretty decent HS players but not good enough to play big time college BB. It helps the ladies because even these guys play at the level or above the Ladies.
