Kara Lawson was a super sub Monday for the USA Women’s Basketball select team.
The former Tennessee Lady Vols guard came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points in a 93-49 victory over the Canberra (Australia) Capitals in the U.S. opener at the FIBA World League tournament in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Lawson scored 11 of her points in the second half as the U.S. pulled away.
“It’s kind of a good progression for us because in the first three games the difficulty goes up each game,’’ Lawson said “(Today), we’re playing a great team that’s played together for awhile and then our third game will be even tougher. Hopefully we can use today as a learning experience.”
The U.S. plays TEO Vilnius from Lithuania today and finishes the opening round against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. The tournament semifinals are Friday and the final is Saturday.
Lawson, who plays for the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs, shot 8 for 11 from the floor, including two for three on 3-pointers. She also had four steals in her 21 playing minutes.
Former Lady Vol Loree Moore, who plays for the New York Liberty, played 14 minutes and had four of the USA’s 25 assists.
The U.S. plays the Lady Vols in an exhibition game Nov. 4 at Thompson-Boling Arena.
