BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In Bruce Pearl's first season as men's basketball coach at Tennessee, the team slogan was, "It's a whole new ball game."
Year two, it was: "Tennessee basketball, we're back," even though Pearl had a slight objection.
"It was too soon to say 'we were back. I wanted to say, 'It, is back,' " he said. "But it was too late, and the posters were already made."
This year's slogan is "Commitment."
"A lot of people talk about my marketing, but I'm really not that creative," Pearl said. "But I know what I like when I hear it, and a lot of people have come to me with ideas. Some were kind of corny and canned, like 'Pearl Jam.'"
The "Commitment" tag struck a chord with Pearl as the Vols soldiered through an offseason away from Thompson-Boling Arena, which underwent nearly $20 million of renovations.
"So I'm looking at guys in hard hats, wheelbarrows full of dirt, and all these skilled craftsmen," Pearl said. "I thought, 'Look at what these guys are doing for us, and what a big commitment from the university.'
"We need to show that type of commitment as a team."
Pearl said despite his success the past two seasons and the team's preseason hype, the program has not arrived.
"Are we a top-20 program? Not yet. We are not a top-20 program yet," Pearl said. "We finished in the top 20 the last two years, we're picked in the top 20 this year, and Tennessee athletics is clearly a top-20 program.
"If we finish in the top 20 again this season, maybe we're getting closer to being that."
Close Call: Mississippi State guard Jamont Gordon, who received two votes for preseason SEC player of the year, said he was coming to Tennessee had former coach Buzz Peterson not been fired after the 2004-05 season.
"It was so real, I was definitely going to UT," Gordon said. "But then Coach Peterson got fired, and I didn't think Coach Pearl showed a lot of interest in me."
Gordon, who is from Nashville, said he's very happy at Mississippi State, but he has wondered what it would have been like to play for Pearl.
"I thought about it, if I was at UT at this position or that position," Gordon said. "Coach Pearl is a great coach and he's taken it to another level. They are more talked about now."
Gordon and UT transfer Tyler Smith were planning on going to the same school.
"Tyler and me went on a lot of visits together and kept in contact," Gordon said. "A lot of people don't know about Tyler, but he's going to do good and create a lot of match-up problems."
Smith signed with UT in November 2004, but never made it to campus in the aftermath of the coaching transition. He attended Hargrave Military Academy and later Iowa.
Team To Beat: Pearl said he's not ducking expectations, but when asked the team to beat in the SEC East his answer was Kentucky.
"If you made me pick the team to beat, that would be Kentucky," Pearl said. "I just think it's their depth, their backcourt and their experience."
Ready To Rumble: Mississippi State center Charles Rhodes said the Bulldogs are looking forward to playing the Vols.
"I got so many teammates from Tennessee, they are all ready for that game," Rhodes said. "They got me looking forward to it."
Rhodes said centers Wayne Chism and Duke Crews play hard.
"They show a lot of heart," Rhodes said. "Chism is a quick big man with a jumper, and Crews is solid on the block and gets the garbage rebounds."
Politically correct: Kentucky coach Billy Gillespie went woefully bland to avoid any bulletin board material when it came to UT.
"I have great respect for every team in the league," Gillespie said, asked about the unavoidable rivalry he and Pearl are sure to have. "I would assume we'll recruit against every school in the SEC."
Gillespie said the team he tips his hat to is further south.
"The benchmark is the team (Florida) that's won the national championship two times in a row," he said. "You're the champion until someone knocks you off the throne."
Sleeper: Georgia guard Sundiata Gaines said UT's Ramar Smith is the player he was most often matched up with when the team's met last season.
"Ramar is developing as a player. We didn't put too much focus on him but he's one of their sleepers," Gaines said. "He's got a chance to be one of the top two point guards in the league."
Watch List: Lofton has been named one of 50 preseason candidates for the Wooden Award, which is named after legendary UCLA coach John Wooden.
Four other SEC players made the preseason list: Patrick Beverley (Arkansas), Shan Foster (Vanderbilt), Gordon (Mississippi State) and Richard Hendrix (Alabama).

Sounds like Jamont has had second thoughts of what it would have been like to be at UT. First thing Jamont is you would not be allowed to be a ball hog. Second you were not going to be the man until your Senior year. Otherwise you should have come.

If Chuck Benson hadn't screwed up the visits while UT was still talking to Pearl, then we might have had Gordon too.
Benson took UT's last visit with Gordon so when Pearl got here he couldn't contact Jamont so he felt slighted when Pearl was coming thru Nashville to see Tyler and not stopping to see him.
Man, you can imagine the fire power of this team if we had Jamont Gordon!
BTW, I hate Kentucky!

I've got mad game. I'm still waiting for my scholarship offer though from Pearl. If I don't get it... I may have to go to Kentucky.
You should see me dominate my Malaysian friends here. It is great!! Even though I'm 5'11'', I am a beast in the post!

Hey Gillespie; UT under Pearl has gone 3-4 against UF while the Gators were on their way to 2 national titles. How did UK do?

That's 3 out of 4, or 3-1.

BigUn, wasn't the visitations to Tyler Smith also used up when Pearl arrived? Is this getting to be like the 5 million that claim to have been at Woodstock. "Oh, I would have gone to UT but Bruce ignored me".

I think you will hear more and more of this kind of stuff from Tennessee players playing elsewhere. Why? Two reasons. First, Pearl cannot and will not sign all of the players from the state of Tennessee in a given year. It is just not logistically possible. Second, Pearl is broadening UT's recruiting to more of a nationwide recruiting base. That means some Tennessee players will invariably be left out. It is a good problem to have. If you noticed the NBA first round draft earlier this year, there were four or five players taken in the first few picks that hailed from Tennessee. While that doesn't happen every year, it is an indication that high school players from Tennessee can and do play at the highest levels. I hope Pearl continues to get his "pick of the litter" from Tennessee and let the chips fall where they may!

I think it was, "Work like heck and look the other way when your coaching staff leads you to an @$$kickin against your two biggest rivals." Yeah, I think that was it.

No offense to anyone here. I'm a huge UT fan and am excited about the upcoming season just as everyone else is. I have to pose this question though in lite of the new team slogan.
If the team slogan this year is "Commitment", why wasn't this same slogan used at home?

Oh wait, never mind! If forgot! It's Bob K's fault.

I know that Tyler's visits weren't used up because I want to say that Pearl visited Smith twice and from what I heard, neither time went real well, especially the 2nd time when Billy Smith and Pearl got into a very heated argument.
I'm not sure what Benson was trying to do, but all of our contacts with Gordon were used up, that annoyed his mother that Pearl didn't contact them, which he couldn't anyway, so Gordon went to MSU.
I remember everyone, me included, thought Pearl should have kept Benson because of his ties to the AAU program, but that was what UT basketball used to be. Pearl told Benson to hit the door, he was getting some real coaches and recruiters in here and getting this thing started.
No complaints here.

Good one scvols! And there is no way if I were in Gordon's shoes I would have spoken about my UT dreams. I can imagine MSU coach Stansbury is wondering just how much his star player wishes he were playing somewhere else. Just seems odd to me that he was talking so fondly about what might have happened had he joined Pearl and the Vols - kinda sounded like he thinks he made a mistake. What an idiot to say that out load for his coach and his fans to hear. Go Vols!!!

Coach Pearl makes life much easier here from Nov to March!

scvols - you're an a$$hole. Once again I ask - Can we stop insulting BP and the basketball team by making football comments on hoops articles? And finally, Pearl is absolutely correct - Kentucky IS the team to beat for the Vols because they WILL surprise ALOT of folks this year. Gillespie is for real. The East could well come down to the final weekend with UK and UT battling all the way. This would of course put a premium on all of the division games due to tiebreakers. But remember - ONE AT A TIME!!
