Tennessee scored its first women's volleyball victory in two weeks Friday night and Chloe Goldman played a big part in the outcome.
Goldman set a school record for digs in a three-game match with 31 as Tennessee beat Georgia 30-24, 30-25, 30-27 at Stokely Athletics Center.
The victory ended a four-match losing streak and was UT's first since an Oct. 12 upset of LSU. It was the first sweep by Tennessee (9-12, 4-9 SEC) since Sept. 1 against Indiana. The Lady Vols got even with Georgia (14-9, 5-8) for a five-game loss in Athens, Ga., on Sept. 23.
"They have been playing and practicing very hard lately and really deserved to get this win,'' UT coach Rob Patrick said of his players. "Our team could have easily fallen into a losing mode, but they were strong mentally and put some tough matches behind them. Our players deserved all the credit for coming in and doing all of the extra work needed to get this victory."
No Lady Vol deserved more credit than Goldman.
"If you look at our season up to this point, Chloe is probably our MVP,'' Patrick said. "Part of the reason she was able to be so successful tonight, was that our block did a fantastic job of channeling the ball to her."
On offense, Nikki Fowler had a team-high 16 kills. Leah Hinkey and Yuliya Stoyanova each had 13 as UT had a .224 hitting percentage, its highest average since hitting .287 in a four-game win over Mississippi State Sept. 16.
Women's Swimming: No. 12 Tennessee swept a pair of dual meets at the UT Student Aquatic Center, beating No. 17 Kentucky 187-113 and South Carolina 213-87.
Christine Magnuson scored three individual victories and a swam a leg on a winning relay for the Lady Vols (3-0, 2-0 SEC). She had NCAA provisional times in the 200 fly (2 minutes, 0.63 seconds) and the 100 fly (54.53).
"In every event we had somebody, if not all three people, really take control of the race,'' Lady Vols coach Matt Kredich said. "I felt like everybody dove in with a vision of how they wanted to race. Kentucky and South Carolina have some great athletes and put up some good races tonight so I feel good that we came out on top."
In diving Lauren LeRoy was third in the one-meter (238.85) and second in the three meter (289.45).
"To be honest, I kind of expected Lauren LeRoy to do a better job on the one-meter board,'' diving coach Dave Parrington said. "She looked strong, but she may have been a little too excited at the beginning of the contest and made a few atypical errors. She bounced back and finished strong though."
Men's Swimming: No. 11 Tennessee scored a double dual meet victory over Kentucky and South Carolina by the scores of 157-41 and 202-96 respectively.
